Pavement - Pavement is the a!tual travel surfa!e espe!ially made dura,le and
servi!ea,le to withstand the traffi! load !ommuting upon it$ Pavement grants fri!tion
for the vehi!les thus providing !omfort to the driver and transfers the traffi! load from
the upper surfa!e to the natural soil$
Fle!"le Pavement - hose pavements whi!h refle!t the deformation of su,grade and the su,seCuent layers to the surfa!e$ 4le.i,le2 usually asphalt2 is laid
with no reinfor!ement or with a spe!iali;ed fa,ri! reinfor!ement that permits limited
flow or repositioning of the road,ed underground !hanges$
he design of fle.i,le pavement is ,ased on load distri, uting !hara!teristi! of the
!omponent layers$ he ,la!/ top pavement in!luding water gravel ,ound ma!adam
fall in this !ategory$
4le.i,le pavement on the whole has low or negligi,le fle.i,le strength fle.i,le in theirstru!tural a!tionB$ he fle.i,le pavement layers transmit the verti!al or !ompressive
stresses to the lower layers ,y grain transfer through !onta!t points of granular
stru!ture$
he verti!al !ompressive stress is ma.imum on the pavement surfa!e dire!tly under
the wheel load and is eCual to !onta!t pressure under the wheels$ 8ue to the a,ility
to distri, ute the stress to large area in the shape of trun!ated !one the stresses get
de!reased in the lower layer$
@s su!h the fle.i,le pavement may ,e !onstru!ted in a num,er of layers and the top
layer has to ,e strongest as the highest !ompressive stresses$
o ,e sustained ,y this layer2 in addition to wear and tear2 the lower layer have
to ta/e up only lesser magnitude of stress as there is no dire!t wearing a!tion die to
traffi! loads2 therefore inferior material with lower !ast !an ,e used in the lower
layers$
