2.5D Matte Painting
Mikael WidegrengsCEPT 2007
INTRODUCTION
- Matte paintings are used to create virtual movie sets or extend current sets.
- They can be either hand-painted or a composite of existing photographs.
- A technique used to add a third dimension to a flat photo or picture, allowing camera movement within it.
“2.5D”
- This makes it necessary to add animated objects inside the photo, to enhance the illusion of life (such as birds, clouds and other elements).
- To create an impressive establishing shot of an environment.
PROJECT GOALS
- Learning more about the matte painting techniques used in modern films today.
- Apply the concept of 2.5D imagery to a landscape.

Applying this technique to a landscape was one of the major goals of this project, as it’s used heavily in modern post-production.

Goal: to become familiar with the use of camera mapping and 2.5D images.
Advantages
- Faster than building the entire scene in “proper” 3D.
- It’s easy.
- More direct control over the piece, from an artist’s point of view.
