Introduction

David Burton remembered building stones being removed from a field near to Patsull Park. On

investigation, an enclosure map from 1811 was found which had marked on it a group of buildings

labelled Hardwick.

Figure 1. 1811 Enclosure map showing buildings labelled Hardwick

WAG was asked to investigate this to find out more about the putative farm.

Methods

The Enclosure map was overlaid on an aerial photograph,

Figure 2. 1911 Enclosure map overlaid on an aerial photograph.

On careful alignment of the road on the two maps, a location for Hardwick farm on the ground was

established.

Seven 20m square grids were laid out on the ground. 6 of them were used for field walking and 7 of

them were used for a resistivity survey.

Figure 3. Layout of grids for field walking and geophysics.

In addition, a pseudosection was made across the location where it is thought the pond was.

Results

Figure 4. Field walking results.

The results of the field walking suggested that grids 2 and 7 contained items associated with a

dwelling (brick, floor tiles, pottery) and grid 4 contained predominantly floor tiles with some coarse

black earthenware. The results may be found in Appendix A.

Figure 6. Resistivity survey of the 7 grids.

A linear feature was found crossing over from grid7 to grid 2 and it was decided to put a trench in at

the junction of the 2 grids. This decision was also made as a result of the field walking which

suggested there was a building at this location.

Figure 7. Trench at Hardwick.

A 1m by 2m trench was dug at the boundary of the grids and this confirmed the field walking finds.

The contents of the trench suggested that there were 2 phases to the building, the earliest using

granite foundations (probably glacial erratics) was burned down (large pieces of charcoal found at

the lowest level, context 120), the later phase was built using sandstone foundations and had a tiled

floor with windows (contexts 100 and 110). This was also burned down

Figure 10. The larger fragment.

Two large pieces of pottery were found in context 110. Both were of coarse brown glazedware.

Reconstruction of the broken pieces revealed a pot of radius 14cm, the unbroken large piece had a

rim of 12cm and, because we had a complete fragment from rim to base was measured to be 130cm

high.

Figure 11. Hardwick complete site plan.

Figure 11 shows the complete site plan of Hardwick and shows the location of the pseudosection in

relation to the areas where it is thought was the location of the pond. The position of the trench

(trench 5) is also shown but not the outline of the current 7 grids which straddle the eastern

geophysics boundary.

Figure 12. Pseudosection across the pond.

The lower picture of the 3 is the pseudosection. Three 30m sections were done, each overlapping the

next by 10m (total length 70m) and were stitched together using the programme PseudoX. There is a

low resistance area extending from 7 metres to 45m which is bounded by higher resistance areas. It is

thought that this section confirms the position of the pond. A test pit was dug at 54m (before the

results of the section were known) and the soil was very hard at that point and full of stones. The line

of the pseudosection may be seen in Figure 13, starting where the white marks cross the tractor tyre

marks.

Discussion

A possible location for a building labelled “Hardwick” was found by overlaying the Enclosure map

on an aerial photograph. Grids were laid out for field walking and geophysics.

The field walking results suggested that there was evidence for a building in grids 2 and 7, and that

there was possibly a tiled area in which coarse black earthenware was used in grid 4.

Geophysics suggested a line, possibly a wall which was at about the same angle as the building

shown on the enclosure map. Excavation uncovered 2 phases of building, possibly a farmhouse.

A pseudosection across the area where the pond was said to have been showed a low resistance area

approximately 40m across at the surface. This is thought to be the remnants of the pond.
