Developing the budget of a project from the various types of costs as they relate to the activity, the project and the corporate context; monitoring the actual cost and scheduling progress of a project in comparison to the planned cost and progress; and determining the variances in cost and progress as indicators of the ’health’ of a project by means of utilising Earned Value Management; interpreting the meaning of the variances, diagnosing the cause of the variances, suggesting remedial measures and making a prognosis of, and forecasting, the eventual outcome of the project in terms of budget and schedule.

The Formulation of the Scope of a Project

Applying a comprehensive scoping process and understanding that the rigorous formulation of the scope of a project is a critical success factor in the execution of a project; formulating the scope of a project (of any kind or size), including validating any assumptions made, and evaluating the foreseeable risks, as well as determining the mitigation actions required; appraising the importance of stakeholder engagement and formalised communication planning prior to and during the execution of the project; converting, through the Work Breakdown Structure, the outcomes of the project as determined in the scoping process and as articulated in the Statement of Work document, into tasks (activities) to be executed in order to enable the delivery of those outcomes.

Orientation to Project Management and Project

Assessing and determining situations which warrant a project management approach, as well as to identifying the elements and processes that are generic to such an approach; distinguishing and interpreting the relationship between organisation strategy and project management and differentiating between various categories of projects, and interpreting and applying the interrelatedness of performance, duration and cost relationships in a project with respect to the project management scoping process.

Cost ManagementTime Management for Projects with Non-Repetitive Elements

Constructing, from a systems perspective, a critical path diagram and Gantt chart, showing the activities to be executed; estimating the duration of each activity and establishing the logical relationships and dependencies between the activities, and interpreting and utilising the precedence diagram and Gantt chart to demonstrate a clear understanding of the application of both the diagrams in project execution, monitor and control.
