INTRODUCTION:

A perfumed corner is yet odor the whole space. This showing how a source is influential to the others. USM is granted as an APEX status which is the Malaysia's first world-class university. A lot

were wondered and till now, mind-wandering of what is an APEX university. They do not know the bare reveal of the inner

interpretation of the unique phase. Let us explain what the word of “Apex” stands is for. APEX is a short form of “accelerated

programmer for excellence”. Literally, apex is the peak grabbed after a process of culmination towards a desired mission. USM is now the only elite varsity in Malaysia, as how the other countries

do. However, a question comes into the real context that Apex USM doesn’t considerate HBP as the school which plays the key

catalyses the achievement as well. We are now started the point to upgrade our HBP into the Excellency.

PLAN:Our theme garden locates at the centre of the lecturer halls of three schools, which are each defined as the

School of HBP, School of Art and School of Education Studies. Geographically, our site can be analyzed as a

low humidity space that incurs the uncontrollable rising of temperature from the bare-exposed to sunlight.

However, we desire to provide a comfort place for USM students to generate their ideas by having a very solemn

and calm space. Other than gather all the students or lecturers together for their mind-revealed and relax. Hence, we propose to have an ideal design using the

features of water and green to reduce the influence from the external disturbance.

We are then going to build a fountain at the middle of the site as the main component for the design. The fountain

keys the whole control in the ventilation, humidity and air temperature as well. It is designed using the continuous flow of water that source from the pump house that we underlay before the fountain built above a space below.

Then the water will pass to a column which is sealed, and flow downwards at the front part as the space is fully

occupied. In fact, the downpour can increase the humidity in the empty space within the fountain, a place for people to be held, further cutting down the heat radiation from the sun. The outstanding design yet beautifies the place

and view.

To much furnish the space, we need to build two wayside pavilions as the extra spaces for the students to rest and

enclose their relationships during their leisure time. They are shaded with trees to block the direct led sunlight to

the users. Besides, pathways are routed around the components built, to be interlinked to each other as

shown in the drawing. Plus, the walk paths contribute a place for the students to exercise or relax.

Furthermore, bumpers are strictly legislated around the garden we built. This is purposely to decelerate the car,

yet the safety of students is guaranteed. Everything we do planned is to ensure the schools; students and all the people around could enjoy its existence as it much

contributes to everyone.

HOW THIS PLAN CONTRIBUTES TO APEX USM?

Since times ago, we will find that all the universities were enhanced to be in park, a green park. But, no even a

varsity shows what we dying to have. We now want to implement this application in this university,

ESPECIALLY the HBP school. Since, our theme garden is clearly in vision beside the E48B and at the entrance of

our school. This symbolizes how does the concept of green applied onto our school. The design can give a

deep impression to those who pass by. Our garden name is Crystal Garden. We choose to have it because of our

design. Night will prove it.

Page 11: PROJECT 6: AN URBAN PLAN. CRYSTAL GARDEN © OLIVA ENDEAVA GROUP MEMBER: LIM BEE KEE (LEADER) (103690) (PLN) ANG HUI MING (103650) (CM) HWONG DICK SON (103676)

The lighting lids the whole garden into pretty gorgeous scenery and peaked uniquely among the others. Then, this

will attract much “foreigners” to visit our school and improve our school and yet the name of our university.

Since, this is the first new product from us and will farther confident us to create more designs and products.

Moreover, we make use of the natural resources as the adding to “furnish” our design. This showing how the

word of “sustainable” greatly indicated from the university authorities. The most important is that we do provide the facilities for that disabled people to use our place as well. Everything is yet better explained in the drawing. A drawing speaks much than a thousand of

words.

DEFINATION OF BIODIVERSITY:

Biodiversity is a contraction of the phrase "biological diversity". Biology means all the living things found within the ecosystem and diversity means the wide variety of something, Therefore, overall, biodiversity describes is the

study of the variety of life forms such as animals, plants ,and other living

things within the ecosystem at all levels of biological systems.

A REVIEW ON BIODIVERSITY:

Currently biodiversity encounters a variety of crisis. Examples of biodiversity crisis•Threaten our food supplies, opportunities for recreation and tourism, and sources of wood, medicines and energy.•Interfere with essential ecological functions•Global atmospheric changes, such as ozone depletion and climate change, only add to the stress. •Global warming is already changing habitats and the distribution of species. •Reduces the productivity of ecosystems, thereby shrinking nature's basket of goods and services, from which we constantly draw.

The main causes of biodiversity crisis

•Habitat destruction.• Invasive species• Pollution • Over-harvesting•Climate change:• Market and economic policy failures •Social, political and institutional weaknesses • Lack of knowledge of biodiversity’s importance

The important of biodiversity to natural environment?

Biodiversity boosts ecosystem productivity where each species, no matter how small, all have an important role to play.•Activities of microbial and animal species can improve and maintain the soil quality.•Maintenance of air quality by regulating the composition of the atmosphere.•Maintenance of water quality whereby Wetland ecosystems absorb and recycle essential nutrients, treat sewage, and cleanse wastes. •Pest control•Detoxification and decomposition of wastes by the activities of living things•Natural pollination and crop production by activities of various animal species•Plant tissues and other organic materials within land and ocean ecosystems contributing to climate stabilization.•Prevention and mitigation of natural disasters

Explanation about our tree, the location and surrounding area.

Tree•The Tembusu (Fagraea fragrans) is a large evergreen tree native to South-east Asia. •Its trunk is dark brown, with deeply fissured bark, looking somewhat like a bitter gourd. •It grows in an irregular shape to 10 to 25m high. •Its leaves are light green and oval in shape. •Its yellowish flowers have a distinct fragrance and the fruits of the tree are bitter tasting red berries, which are eaten by birds and fruit bats.•The trunk of this tree can produce very hard wood, and this wood can be used to make chopping boards.

•Location & surrounding area

The tree is situated at the corner of the site and near the building Wijaya and School of HBP area. At the location, no buildings are there, just an abandon site. Thus, sunlight can be received by the tree and converted into food and energy through process photosynthesis. Crossing the road, there has a lecture hall (DK D,E,F) opposite the site. Alternatively, HBP lecture hall is located around there.

The diversified species around the tree

The House sparrow is the number two urban pest birds. They nest in urban structures, eat scraps and have a large breeding capacity is some of their traits. Their legs and toes are favoured for branch perching and their short conical bills are ideal for seed cracking.

Bees are flying insects closely related to wasps and ants, and are known for their role in pollination and for producing honey and beeswax. Bees are a monophyletic lineage within the superfamily Apoidea, presently classified by the unranked taxon name Anthophila.

A squirrel is one of many small or medium-sized rodents in the family Sciuridae. In the English-speaking world, squirrel commonly refers to members of this family's genera Sciurus and Tamiasciurus, which are tree squirrels with large bushy tails, indigenous to Asia, the Americas and Europe.

Ants are social insects of the family Formicidae (pronounced /fɔrˈmɪsəˌdiː/), and along with the related wasps and bees, they belong to the order Hymenoptera. Ants evolved from wasp-like ancestors in the mid-Cretaceous period between 110 and 130 million years ago and diversified after the rise of flowering plants.

What do you think biodiversity ?

Everything on earth is connected. Of course, human and animals need the food supply such as plants to go

further their life. Thus, the consideration of the sunlight, wind and humidity are needed for plants to

survive. From the above, it shows that natural environment is linked with the living things. Without human, animals, plants and natural environment, the

world will not be existed.

Why is it relevant in USM?

As the university in a garden, biodiversity play a very important role. Because this concept as

conceptualized by USM is designed to depict the close affinity between its roles and function as an institution of higher learning and nature amidst a garden setting. The flora, fauna, aquatic elements and other natural creations are dynamically linked

in the exploration into the nature of existence.

How the biodiversity contributes to Crystal Garden?

Crystal Garden is garden contains a fountain. Fountain is a building while plants, tree and flowers are used as

decoration. Sustainable is enforced in our design of theme garden. There are a lot of species of plants,

flowers, trees and etc. It can be concluded as biodiversity in the theme garden.
