    Project 1

    Synopsis (Individual Work)8 weeks;40% of final mark (for a total of 8 synopses)

    Learning Outcomes1. Describe the theoretical issues related to design through study of architecture and urbanism and its related studies

    2. Apply and relate architectural theories to contemporary architecture and urban forms3. Produce, orally and in writing, a critical interpretation of architecture and urbanism in relation to relevant theories within the contemporary

    discourse of architecture

    TasksIndividually, students are to present a synopsis of a reading during the seminar sessions. It is intended to provide each student with theopportunity to share their knowledge with the class, and to help promote student discussions.

    Synopses should be submitted within tutorial session with the given form. Every session, twelve students shall present their synopses for fiveminutes each, plus other five minutes for discussion with each student. Every student shall present his synopsis two times during the wholeeight weeks. For those students presenting their synopses, marks will be given on their presentations and discussions; they have to submit theirforms as well. For the rest of the students, marks will be given on their submitted forms.

    Every student will be supplied with a designated text, from which he/she will prepare the synopsis; this will be for only the first three lectures. Forthe rest of the lectures, every student shall choose the text him/herself.

    These should be collated as a portfolio to be submitted at the end of the Lecture Series.

    Assessment criteria

    Identification of key points from the reading; (20% of the synopsis mark)

    Use of appropriate architectural terminologies and writing skills in the synopsis; (30% of the synopsis mark)

    Relevance of the choice of architecture or urban design as examples to illustrate theory; (30% of the synopsis mark)

    Present verbally to communicate the key points and facilitate dialogue within the group. (20% of the synopsis mark)

    First, choose an urban/urbanism/urbanization theory, no matter whether it was discussed in the lecture, orfrom out of the lecture. Then choose a case study that represents your chosen theory. A city, or a part of acity (urban area) should be very fine to represent your chosen theory. The chosen image/images topresent your chosen case study can be a map, an image of a 3D model, an image of the actual city/urbanarea, etc...
