PROJECT OVERVIEW

Designing a LEGO App to help LEGO kit user about their LEGO. I designed an app using a data and information I collected from research. I was able to learn to design different types of graphs.


POLAR AREA DIAGRAM (AKA. COXCOMB CHART)

“A Coxcomb chart, sometimes referred to as a polar area chart or a rose chart, is sort of a combination of a bar chart and a pie chart. Instead of the angles being changed based on data, the area of each segment is adjusted based on data by changing the radius. It is important not to change the radius purely based on the data, but to proportionately change the radius so that the area of each segment changes with the data. Changing the raw radius value will disproportionately change the area, causing people to perceive the data incorrectly.”

PIE OR RING CHART

“A pie chart (or a circle chart) is a circular statistical graphic, which is divided into slices to illustrate numerical proportion. In a pie chart, the arc length of each slice (and consequently its central angle and area), is proportional to the quantity it represents.” -Google

The plural of LEGO is LEGO. It doesn’t matter if you have one or one hundred pieces of LEGO, it’s still LEGO – although many people call them LEGOs.

LEGO comes from the Danish word leg godt. Leg godt means “play well” in Danish and LEGO is made from the first two letters of each word.

LEGO is 83 years old. The LEGO Group began in 1932 in Billund, Denmark and was founded by Ole Kirk Christiansen.

The company is 83 years old, but the interlocking LEGO blocks were manufactured from 1949. This makes the LEGO blocks we all know and love 66 years old.

Ole Kirk Christiansen was a carpenter. He lost his business and began to make toys out of his leftover wood. He was inspired to construct a small wooden duck toy for his children and when they loved it he put them into production to sell.

LEGO was originally called “Automatic Binding Bricks”. LEGO were not actually the first company to market the bricks. They modified and improved the original Kiddicraft bricks to create their own.

The LEGO Group eventually purchased the rights to the Kiddicraft block in 1981.

In 1958, the LEGO brick with the familiar tubes inside and studs on was patented. This was done on 28 January, 1958 and all 2 x 4 LEGO bricks since then have been produced to the exact measurements of this patent.

A LEGO brick from 1958 would interlock with a brick from 2015. The patent introduced what is called a “universal system” so that each piece is compatible with all other pieces, regardless of the year or set it belongs to.

LEGO sued a Chinese company who made “Coko bricks” in 2002. These blocks were very similar to LEGO bricks and Coko were forced to cease production and issue a formal apology as well.

LEGO DUPLO bricks are eight times the size of original LEGO bricks. Because of the universal system they will still connect together.

The LEGO minifigure, also known as “minifig” or just “fig” was first introduced in 1978. The early figures before this, in 1975, had no facial features, gender, arms, or moveable legs.

Each LEGO minifigure is exactly four bricks high without a hat.

In 2009, British TV presenter James May built a life size house out of LEGO. It used 3.3 million bricks and it included a working toilet, a shower and a bed – which was very uncomfortable.

In 2012, 45.7 billion LEGO bricks were produced. This actually works out to be a rate of 5.2 million LEGO bricks per hour.

18 out of every million LEGO pieces fail to meet the company standard. This is because the factory process is so streamlined and efficient.

If you laid all of the LEGO bricks sold in 2012 end-to-end, they would stretch around the world more than 18 times.

Seven LEGO sets are sold every second. By the time you have read this fact, dozens of LEGO sets have been sold around the world.

You could reach the moon with a column of around 40 billion LEGO bricks. The column would be over 384,400 km tall.

There are actually enough LEGO bricks to stack from the Earth to the moon – ten times.

Six eight-stud LEGO bricks can be combined in over 915 million different ways. Two bricks can be combined 24 different ways, and three bricks 1,060 ways.

Since the first minifigure in 1978 more than 4 billion have been made. This makes LEGO them the world’s largest population group (if they were alive)!

As of 2013, over 560 billion LEGO parts have been produced. On average, that is 86 LEGO bricks for every single person on the earth.

LEGO is the world’s largest producer of rubber wheels. They produce more than Bridgestone, Goodyear and all other car tyre manufacturers.

The tallest LEGO tower was 94 feet high and used 465,000 bricks. The tower was a pirate ship mast with a “treasure” made of gold, yellow and clear bricks on top and was built at

The largest commercial LEGO set is the Taj Mahal set. It has 5,922 individual pieces.

There are no LEGO sets with a war or military theme. This is because LEGO creator Ole Kirk Christiansen didn’t want to make war seem appealing to children.

In 2011, astronauts took LEGO to space. It was caused the “LEGO Bricks in Space” program and 13 LEGO sets were taken to the International Space Station to see how they react in microgravity.

In 2000, LEGO was named “Toy of the Century” by the British Association of Toy Retailers. LEGO beat both the common teddy bear and the Barbie doll.

There are artists who sculpt their work exclusively using LEGO. A New York based artist called Nathan Sawaya was the first artist to ever take LEGO into the art world. He is shown in museums throughout America and has a touring exhibition called “The Art Of The Brick.”

In 2014, the LEGO Group became the world’s largest toy company. They are now larger than Mattel. LEGOLAND in California.

Who invented the Lego?

The Lego Group began in the workshop of Ole Kirk Christiansen (1891–1958), a carpenter from Billund, Denmark, who began making wooden toys in 1932. In 1934, his company came to be called “Lego”, derived from the Danish phrase leg godt, which means “play well”.

I looked up the mesaurement of the bricks. It was fun to see and examine my own LEGO’s. I really enjoyed the time I had to slow down and look at all the cool details. w

WIRE FRAMES

My quick wire frames. I used it for my first drafts. I did more drafts along the way after each user testing.

As I reserached more LEGO I realized how colorful they designed their app. So I decided to make it less busy with all the color.

I did more researchon how LEGO’s can be used. It was fun to see how people use LEGO in their life.


LEGO APP #1

Use test #1 Yoshi

• First page was easy to use. No problem finding the start bottom.

• Second page was easy as well. No confusion.

• The third page. Maybe combine the two data. There are many repetition. So maybe put the brick where the names are placed on the y-axis. It will give more space.

• The fourth page could change other. I think it would make more sense to have the brick on the right and the pie chart on the left. Also, place the number in front of the pie chart. It will make the data easily to read.

• Fifth page. Good.

• Sixth page is hard to understand in general.

• Seventh and eighth page makes sense.

• Nine text is very small to read. Make it bigger.

• Tenth page. Make it more interesting.

• Change and add more subtitles to help explain what is shown in app

• Say probability instead of Lego Fact

• Scale should be bigger and Lego should be small. It makes more sense more.

• Height by color should be added to the Lego Tower.

• Change the wording of the app.. Maybe use wording like Actual and Sample or theory.

• Size can be used as shape as well

• Put C anf F for temperature

• Maybe use an arrow or something to connect the penny to the brick.

PONDER

The LEGO App helped me stretch my ability

to design for an ipad setting.

This project was first time to think about

how to change the screen to the next

screen for ipad. I became more aware of my

phone app and ipad transitions. I learned

to applicate all the user experience app

designers. They know how to guide users

smoothly.

I never realized how useful and confusion

graphs can be. I went through a lot

discussions about how to improve my

labels. In the beginning I did not understand

the importance of simple label. I thought

everyone can read the graphs, but I was

wrong. Many people can read but could not

understand what I am trying to convey. I

changed the labels several times. I had to

let go of some of my ideas. I was taught do

not get attached to my projects since it will

make it hard to let go and improve. I have to

agree it is true.

Last few weeks I was able to learn that

anything could be interesting piece of data.

It is up to the designers to design, beautify,

and readable. I was pondering about the

time when I was serving in Louisiana we

did a service project in the library. I always

wanted to read a book with beautiful covers.

I realized App needed to be appealing so the

users will want to use and read it. I have so

much to learn about design.

I was able to pay attention to the details last

few weeks. I truly wanted to design an app

with purpose. I was able to work through

my crazy schedule. I am simply grateful for

my Heavenly Father to find time and energy

to work each day so I can accomplish my

goals. I think it is a miracle that I did not

collapse with lack of sleep from waking up

super early each morning and still take care

of my nephew and niece.

Think this project helped me get ready for the

next project. I realized that any topic would be

good topic if I can design well with purpose. If

I can make a simple LEGO app just for data, I

can design something beautiful for topic I am

passionate about.
