Successful data management projects don’t typically begin with technology considerations. Instead, they engage the business community who generates, acquires, and uses the data. Those business users will establish the long-term success factors for your initiatives.

Use the Value Generation Cycle to Make Incremental Progress

In the value generation cycle, you determine the value your data can provide, and then use the right technology to harness your data and deliver real results. The value generation cycle lets operational priorities drive immediate needs. You can simultaneously launch data integration, data governance, and business intelligence (BI) development initiatives as part of a continuous flow. The business priorities drive the BI plan, which in turn drives plans for data integration and Master Data Management (MDM).

Projects either try to accommodate too many domains at once, which can cause lengthy delays, or they get lost in the minutiae by focusing too intently on a small subset of the total problem. These projects tend to make small, incremental advancements, but they never add up to an enterprise solution.

Focusing on the value generation cycle helps avoid these problems.

MDM provides a single view of business domains such as customer, facility, and product, and is one of the major reasons to undertake progressive data management. The benefits include better operations, better analytics, and improved strategic business understanding.

It can be complex and costly, but the value gener-ation lifecycle simplifies MDM and keeps the focus on immediate and long-term business benefits.
