IPO Director’s Message

A New Dimension of University Education and Research

The Interdisciplinary Programs Office (IPO) is a significant development in HKUST’s well-established tradition of innovative teaching, learning and research. Working across and with all Schools, the IPO answers the demand of the community for graduates and researchers who can tackle the increasingly complex issues of our times through a special combination of knowledge and skills. Bringing together two or more different fields of disciplinary study together, the IPO aims to cultivate a different type of educational environment and research experience for those interested in integrating their capabilities and developing original approaches to solution-building. We aim to foster a new breed of competent graduates who are open-minded, versatile and exploratory in their career development.

We administer the interdisciplinary Division of Environment, which provides an excellent opportunity for undergraduate and postgraduate education, research, as well as extensive community outreach programs focused on environmental issues. In addition, our Division of Biomedical Engineering coordinates and promotes leading education and research initiatives in its expertise areas. Research projects in partnership with industry and the community are also encouraged through the Dual Degree Program in Technology and Management and Risk Management and Business Intelligence Program to allow full engagement of our students with the community.

Capitalizing on HKUST’s academic strengths across a broad spectrum of disciplines, and a physical infrastructure and management style that are conducive to collaborative and interdisciplinary research, the IPO’s postgraduate programs work synergistically to develop fresh insight and solutions in areas of critical importance. They do so by integrating broad based knowledge and diverse skill sets. Research methodology, research presentations and communication skills are all key elements in our programs.

The way forward for IPO will be challenging and at the same time. I’m certain it will be rewarding. We offer cutting-edge degree programs and research opportunities that stand out from the crowd – and help our graduates and partners to do the same.

Sincerely,

Prof King L Chow Director, Interdisciplinary Programs Office

The Division of Biomedical Engineering (BME) leads interdisciplinary educational activities and pursues

excellence in research activities in this fast-growing field. A key goal is to develop biomedical engineering research projects relevant to the local community and to engage in partnerships of discovery with industry.

Within HKUST, we serve as a platform to bring together faculty members with interest and expertise in biomedical engineering and foster collaboration in teaching and research. The Division works closely with the Schools of Science and Engineering to support the development of undergraduate and postgraduate programs and courses in biotechnology and bioengineering.

Research Themes• Computational biomedical engineering

• Biomaterials, biosensing and bioelectronics

• Biosystems design and engineering

Four foundation research areas have been identified: early disease diagnosis and prevention; medical and therapeutic treatment; emerging biomedical technologies; and rehabilitation and regenerative medicine. To drive research forward, computational medicine and multiscale imaging for living systems are emphasized.

FacilitiesThe Bioengineering Laboratory (http://belab.ust.hk) is a communal laboratory to assist research and teaching activities. It provides facilities to support the bioengineering areas under research, including biomicrosystems, bioproduct/processing engineering, biomaterials and pharmaceutical engineering.

The University also has several world-class centralized research facilities to assist bioengineering research. These include the Materials Characterization and Preparation Facility, Nanoelectronics Fabrication Facility, and Biosciences Central Research Facility.

Climate change, pervasive pollution, and demand pressures on key natural resources pose serious challenges to

sustainable development. Managing and minimizing these challenges requires a holistic approach involving basic and applied scientists, technologists, integrators, and policy-makers in academia, industry and the government.

The Division of Environment seeks to meet such challenges. Our stimulating undergraduate and postgraduate programs place emphasis on interdisciplinary research, drawing in HKUST academics from different fields. Faculty members have backgrounds in science, engineering, business and social sciences to provide integrated and cutting-edge education on global environmental issues and emerging solutions.

Our academics also reach out to the community, raising public awareness on sustainability, fostering technology transfer and working with industry on applications with positive impact for society.

Research ThemesThe Division’s main areas of focus are:

• Atmospheric science and air pollution• Oceanic science and water pollution• Climate change policy and adaptations

• Sustainability• Healthy living environment

We also work at the points where these areas intersect, such as the scientific understanding of management strategies and policy formulations.

FacilitiesHKUST Air Quality Research Supersite Facility (http://envr.ust.hk/supersite/) is the first such facility in Hong Kong focusing on real-time characterization of air pollutants, especially particulate pollutants. Over HK$17 million of equipment is housed at the supersite.

Other facilities and equipment that support teaching and learning include: the Environmental Central Facility; Coastal Marine Laboratory; environmental monitoring facilities; realtime air quality and meteorological forecasting systems; satellite receiving systems; and Geographical Information System.

Interdisciplinary Research Capitalizing on HKUST’s academic strength across a broad spectrum of disciplines, IPO fosters the collaborative and interdisciplinary research required to tackle the increasingly cross-boundary issues of today and explore new directions.

Making a Multidisciplinary Impact• The Air Quality Research Supersite facility completed

real-time measurements and physical and chemical characterization of PM and VOC at HKUST and the Mong Kok Environmental Protection Department station and used the data for advanced air quality modeling and source apportionments.

• The Supersite team also helped develop the Air Quality Health Index (AQHI), which has replaced the Air Pollution Index in informing the public about air quality in Hong Kong. The work was carried out together with the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

• A multidisciplinary Division of Environment research team invented a low voltage pulsed electric field device, which can kill more than 90% of bacteria within a few seconds. The technology is a potential way to help control the spread of waterborne diseases, such as Legionellosis.

• Cross-institutional collaborations include a project for cardiac cell sensing and drug screening with electrochemical transistor array.

• The Division of Biomedical Engineering has established collaborative research projects under the Chiba-Shanghai Jiao Tong-HKUST university alliance.

LearningtoAssisttheCommunity

The Global Health Technology Initiative combines interdisciplinary learning, overseas study trips and undergraduate innovation to create tangible social impact. In one enterprising initiative, students visited Cambodian slums and mobile clinics operated by a partner NGO, then recommended solutions centered on simple technology. They continued to work on the project back in Hong Kong.

Dual Degree Program in Technology and Management students joined the Global Social Venture Competition in Japan, working in teams with students from Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States to tackle urban challenges, such as high youth unemployment.

Capstone projects in Environmental Management and Technology Program enabled students to go into the community, analyze problems and come up with recommendations for decision-makers. Examples include proposals on environmental sustainability for a property development, revitalization of a fresh produce market, and supermarket food wastage.

TacklingIndustryChallenges
