KVIE Art AuctionCELEBRATES 35 YEARS!For 35 years, KVIE has been celebrating local artists with the KVIE Art Auction. The annual live television event has grown and changed over three and a half decades, but the core mission remains the same: support local public television and local arts of all shapes and sizes. And it’s made possible by the generosity of our regional artists, our sponsors, and our viewers, whose donations help KVIE bring the best in arts, drama, science, and more to Northern California.

The KVIE Art Auction has been a live television broadcast since 1981, but the auction has been going on for much longer. The vibrant works created by our region’s artists don’t always look good in greyscale, so before color television sets were common, the auction was an in-person event, with bidding paddles instead of phone banks.

“Take Home a Sofa During KVIE’s Auction,” read The Sacramento Bee headline on June 7, 1984. In days past, KVIE’s annual auction wasn’t just about art – community members donated and bid on everything from furniture to helicopter rides and farm animals! In fact, a past staff member recalled a steer getting loose from the animal pen, sprinting away with the station’s chief engineer in hot pursuit.

KVIE is fortunate to work with many of our region’s most talented artists, including Gregory Kondos and Wayne Thiebaud. Some have participated in the KVIE Art Auction for years – an auction program from 1986 shows a piece called “Genetics” from sculptor Fred Gordon, who also has a piece in this year’s auction and was recently featured in an exhibit at the KVIE Gallery.

In 1997, artists were challenged to create pieces with a Channel 6 theme. Their works put unique spins on the past KVIE logo, taking it to new heights. School children from Twin Lakes Elementary School, Hazel Strauch Elementary School, and more submitted their own versions of Channel 6 art.

Volunteers have been the backbone of the KVIE Art Auction since the beginning, and KVIE is fortunate to have many dedicated volunteers. There are so many valuable roles that volunteers provide, such as on-air talent, art moving, production crew, phone bank support, and stylists that provide hair and makeup services. Some volunteers have become part of the auction over the decades! KVIE continues to be grateful for the fantastic support we receive from volunteers – the KVIE Art Auction would not be possible without our volunteers.

We’re proud to continue to present this showcase of the arts in our region. What you’ll see this year is a culmination of 35 years of seeking out and celebrating the best and brightest artists, from those new to their craft to California masters – and we look forward to many more years to come.

The KVIE Art Auction will broadcast live from our studios on Friday, September 23 from 7PM to 10PM, Saturday, September 24 from noon to 10PM, and Sunday, September 25 from noon to 10PM. More than 260 original works of art from local artists will be available for bidding. Notice is hereby given that the Annual Meeting of KVIE, Inc. will be held at KVIE, 2030 W. El Camino Avenue, Sacramento at Noon on Wednesday, September 21, 2016. For more information, contact Kellie Raines at (916) 641-3561. Elections: Up to 3 members of the Board of Directors will be elected at the Annual Meeting. Nominees will be presented by the Nominating Committee. If the number of qualified individuals nominated for the Board is not more than the number of positions to be elected, then in accordance with KVIE’s Bylaws, the Board of Directors may, without further action, declare that these nominees have been elected at the Annual Meeting. It is anticipated that this procedure will be followed at the Annual Meeting on September 21, 2016.
