2021 Presbyterian Schools Quadrangular Tournament 3

Headmaster’s Welcome

I would like to extend a warm welcome to all students, staff

and parents from the Colleges attending the 29th annual

Presbyterian Schools Quadrangular tournament at Scots

College.

There is no doubt that this tournament is a highlight in each

College’s programme and I know it is an eagerly awaited

event. Our four Colleges have a similar tradition and events

such as this forge friendships between the Colleges and

students involved.

A feature of such tournaments is the spirit in which the games are played and I am

sure this year will be no exception with all games being fiercely and fairly contested.

I am sure the players are looking forward to the competition and camaraderie.

It is a great pleasure to have a number of parents supporting this event. I hope

you are able to attend the events organised for you and I trust that you all have a

memorable time in Wellington, enjoying the opportunity to mix and mingle as well

as take in the sights of the city. We invite you to enjoy the hospitality of the College.

Such tournaments do not simply “happen”. I would like to thank all the staff,

sponsors, officials and families who have contributed to the staging of this occasion;

without your assistance it would not be possible.

Yours sincerely

College Rugby Highlights

St Andrew’s CollegeSt Andrew’s College is an independent, co-educational school for pre-school to Year 13 day and

boarding students. At St Andrew’s, proud Scottish Presbyterian traditions and values, academic

rigour, and exceptional sporting, cultural and leadership opportunities combine for an education

that is truly world-class and a life experience that is unforgettable. The College was founded in 1916

and has now been co-educational for 27 years. The College has a strong co-curricular programme

and offers students more than 50 sports and cultural activities. In the Secondary School,

participation remains a key priority and most students participate in at least one activity. There are

many opportunities for students to test their talent at regional, national and even international level.

Specialist coaches and tutors are available to help students extend their ability and experience.

St Andrew’s College has a proud reputation in rugby and fields seven teams from the Secondary

School, and a further four from the Preparatory School in the CRFU Saturday competitions. In

2011 and 2012 the 1st XV had two of their strongest years in recent times making the top four of

the Crusaders region Schools competition in both years. The 2015 team went the Top Four Co-

educational competition and returned as champions. St Andrew’s College has also held the famous

Moascar Cup (2016) being only the third school in the South Island to win this. In 2020 the 1st XV

had one of it’s most successful seasons in recent history in winning the U.C Championship for the

first time in the current format it runs under which has been going for 21 years.

Saint Kentigern CollegeSaint Kentigern College is an independent Presbyterian school offering a premium education to

girls and boys in Years 7–13. The College is located on a large and attractive campus in the suburb

of Pakuranga, 16 kilometres from the centre of Auckland. Our students enjoy extensive playing

fields and world class teaching facilities.

Established in 1953, the College has evolved into a state-of-the-art, educational facility which

remains true to its traditional Christian faith and values. Rugby, being the national sport in New

Zealand, has had a high profile at the College since it was opened in 1953. The Saint Kentigern 1st

XV has had a regular presence at the top level of Auckland Secondary School Rugby.

The team plays in the highly competitive Auckland 1A competition. The team was runner up in

1996, 1998 and 2000 before winning the competition in 2001. We placed 3rd in Auckland in 2008.

In 2010 after placing 5th in the Auckland 1A competition we won the National co-educational

competition. In 2011 Saint Kentigern won the Auckland 1A competition and defended the National

co-educational title. After winning the Auckland 1A competition again in 2012, the school went on

to win the National Top 4 competition that year, along with winning the SANIX World competition

in Japan at the start of 2013 and then went on to win the Auckland 1A competition for the 3rd year

in a row. We lost the final of the National competition in 2013. Today, Saint Kentigern has a proud

tradition of competing at the highest level in over a 68 year Rugby history.

Lindisfarne CollegeThroughout the 68-year history of Lindisfarne College, rugby teams have consistently fought

above their weight. A proud rugby tradition has evolved, and the College has now produced six All

Blacks: Mick Duncan (1971, two tests), John Timu (1989-94, 50 matches, 26 tests), Taine Randell

(1995-2002, 61 matches, 51 tests, 22 as Captain), Campbell Johnstone (2005, 3 tests), Israel Dagg

(2010 – 2018, 66 tests) and George Bridge (2018 – present, 10 tests to date). Lindisfarne College

has also produced eleven NZ Schools’ players and 40 in various NZ age group sides over the years.

At present, we field six rugby teams from a school roll of approximately 500 Secondary School

pupils. These teams are all coached and managed by staff members. As a College, we work hard to

compete against strong local schools in Hastings BHS, Napier BHS, Te Aute College and St John’s

College. We have annual traditional fixtures against Scots College, Rathkeale College and Wanganui

Collegiate. Currently the 1st XV team competes in the competitive CNI competition which means

that we get to play a very high standard of rugby week in, week out.

The 1st XV is looking forward to the challenges ahead during their 2021 season and in particular

the Annual Presbyterian Schools Quadrangular Tournament held at Scots College.

Scots CollegeScots College, when it was formed in 1916, had a mission of nurturing the holistic development of

its students. To do this we ensure that our students are involved in sporting, academic and cultural

pursuits as well as service and leadership. Rugby has been an important part of College life for

over 100 years and it is our belief that such team games develop character and team work in our

students. The added benefit to be derived from participating in competitive sport is the opportunity

presented to represent the College beyond school and we continue to celebrate the achievements

of our Old Collegians like James McCormack (1947), Chris Tregaskis (1991) and Victor Vito (2010)

who all represented the All Blacks.

We have a proud history of rugby tradition at the College whether it be via our local Wellington

competition or beyond. Honours include winning the CSW Premiership in 1989, 2014, 2019 and

2020. Further success was achieved at regional level with the 1st XV winning the Hurricanes

Championship in 2014 and 2015. The highlight for the College came in 2014 when the 1st XV

won the National tournament and then fell just short in 2015, losing in the final. Our Rugby 7s

programme has also achieved great success with the Senior team winning the Condors 7s title from

2017 to 2019. Many individuals have also gone on to regional and national representation both

players and coaching staff, and this is most pleasing.

The Secondary School had four rugby teams playing in the College Sport Wellington competition

and they had a very successful 2020 winning three age group competitions (1st XV, 2nd XV, U65)

and we look forward to 2021 with great anticipation.
