Hillary Scholarship Programme
HILLARY SCHOLARS TO BENEFIT FROM NEW SPONSORSHIPIt’s my pleasure to announce a new sponsorship for the Hillary Scholarship Programme. Orbit Corporate Travel, a division of the
Hamilton-owned and operated business, Calder and Lawson House of Travel Ltd, has made a generous commitment to support
the programme for the next fi ve years.
Under the terms of the sponsorship, Orbit Corporate Travel, the University’s preferred travel supplier, has agreed to donate to the Programme $180,000 a year
plus GST for fi ve years until 2011. We are very pleased that Orbit shares the University’s aspirations for our Hillary Scholars and to have this level of support
from a local business.
Making the fi rst donation to the programme at a recent function,
Orbit indicated it welcomed the opportunity to support a local
initiative which encourages and supports all-round excellence,
benefi ting both individual scholars and the community. Orbit also
supports the Waikato Hospice.
The Hillary Scholarship Programme was launched in 2004
to assist students who are talented sportspeople or artistic
performers while they undertake tertiary study. There are
currently 99 Hillary Scholars.
Calder and Lawson’s Orbit Travel join the Gallagher Group as
sponsors of the Hillary Scholarship Programme. This new source
of support will enable the University to continue to support
talented students through the Hillary Scholarship Programme

MUSIC RANKED FIRSTHillary Scholars who are enrolled in papers with the University’s Music Department can feel
particularly proud with the Music Department being ranked fi rst in the country for its Performance
Based Research Funding (PBRF) results. These results refl ect the quality of the research by music
staff. Students can be confi dent in knowing that they are being taught and mentored by staff who
are working at very high levels both nationally and internationally.
Staff member and composer Michael Williams said “as a department we are absolutely delighted.
This result is the culmination of a great deal of work, utter determination, a fair amount of sacrifi ce
and an unwavering belief that the paths we have chosen have been the right ones. It is wonderful
to have been in a position to contribute to the University’s outstanding success in PBRF.”
Despite this remarkable success, music department staff are not resting on their laurels. It is
business as usual, albeit with a slightly more spry spring in their step – there are operas, concertos,
quartets, solo works etc, etc to write – concertos, sonatas, trios, quartets, quintets etc etc to
perform, papers to be written , conferences to attend, CDs to be recorded...
The University of Waikato showed its strength by being ranked Number 1 in New Zealand in
10 subjects in the Tertiary Education Commission’s 2006 Performance Based Research Funding

HILLARY SCHOLARS WIN NEW ZEALAND UNIVERSITY BLUES AWARDSHillary Scholar Alumni, James Gill (Golf), Natalie Curtis (Shooting)
and current Hillary Scholars Sarah Campbell (Karate), Emma Davis
(Motocross), Laura Langman (Netball), Nikki Cox (Surf Lifesaving) and
Sarah Ho (Table Tennis) have won New Zealand University Blues.
Laura Langman and Nikki Cox are both fi nalists for the NZU Sportsperson
of the year. The award ceremony is to be held on 29 June in Wellington.
The NZ Universities Blue is awarded by University Sport
New Zealand and is based on the traditional Blue of Oxford and
Cambridge. It is awarded to NZ University students who have
achieved excellence both on and off the field of play. Presented
since 1919, over 2,500 Blues have been awarded to some of NZ’s
most famous sporting names such as Richie McCaw (2001),
Sarah Ulmer (1994 & 95), David Kirk (1983 & 84), Anna Lawrence
(1991, 93 & 95) and Anthony Mosse (1983)
WAIKATO VOLLEYBALL ATTRACTS TOP COACH TO
HAMILTON This year will see one of
the world’s top coaches
residing in the Waikato.
Koji Tsururabara, who
has coached at top
international level in
Japan, Malaysia, Thailand,
Myanmar and Saudi Arabia
is now based in Hamilton.
Tsururabara is also a highly
qualifi ed coach with a FIVB Level 2 coaching accreditation
(the highest there is). His other skills include being a
qualifi ed Chiropractor, Personal Trainer and PE Teacher.
Tsururabara wanted a new challenge in his volleyball coaching career
and viewed New Zealand as such a challenge. Tsururabara, who coached
the Japanese women’s team to fourth place at the Seoul Olympics,
sent a broad wide spread email throughout NZ clubs and associations
expressing interest in NZ volleyball. One of his emails found its way to
Waikato’s SportsForce Volleyball Development Offi cer, Carey Giddens,
who then began correspondence on how to get such a talented coach
to New Zealand. After several months of emails travelling back and forth
Tsururabara is now living in Hamilton and fi nalising his working visa so
as to stay as long as possible.
“I have been coaching all through Asia but I wanted to work with tall,
athletic players,” Tsururabara explains, “New Zealand is a place which
has the players and there is room to develop and I can help.”
The 42-year-old wants to stay in New Zealand and is hoping his
volleyball expertise can help to open doors for kiwi players in the
world arena
FILM, SCREEN AND MEDIA Hillary Scholars Adam Harvey and Emit Snake-Beings are both
studying fi lm, screen and media here at Waikato.
As well as being a part-time orthopaedic
surgeon, Adam Harvey is currently
working towards Honours in
Computer Graphic Design, and
is having an exciting six months.
He took part in the 48 hour
fi lm festival and gave a
‘tongue in cheek’ presentation
at the Wanganui Design
Conference. This is closely
followed by the June deadline
for the NZ Film Commission’s
screen writing competition.
With the support of the
Hillary Programme, Adam will
be heading north each week to attend a course at Auckland’s Freelance
Animation School beginning in July. With Hillary Scholar Chris Dunn, Adam
is also working on the graphics and design for the Annual Blues Awards
evening, to be held in October.
Emit Snake-Beings is completing a BA majoring
in Screen and Media Studies and is currently
organising the Hamilton
Underground fi lm festival (known
as HUFF07). This festival shows
local and internationally made
videos and fi lms, and begins
on September 11. This year the
festival will be run for three days
after last year’s success when
unexpectedly high audience
turnout meant people were
turned away. The festival is hoped
to inspire Waikato students and
other emerging fi lm-makers,
and is focused on a “celebration
of Hamilton’s creative spirit” rather than competition. The festival includes
certain special categories including phone fi lms (made on mobile phones)
and experimental fi lms
VALUE YOUR DIFFERENCEIn the business world those companies that are able to differentiate their products/services from those of their competitors usually end up being the most profi table. As part of the Leadership and Personal Development Plan, Peter Sewell FCA,B.Com, APS. recently shared with Hillary Scholars and Hillary Programme partners the critical factors required to make students, business leaders and their companies highly successful. Peter’s entertaining and highly motivational presentation helped the audience “put legs on their dreams” by discovering their own unique style and abilities.
Peter Sewell is Fellow of the NZ Chartered Accountants with a career spanning 30 years in business banking before setting up his own consultancy business. He has represented New Zealand at various international conferences as a key note speaker and has delivered addresses on leadership, business and family issues in many countries in the world
ATHLETICS STUDENTS HAVE A GOOD REASON TO STAY IN THE WAIKATOAthletics Waikato Bay of Plenty chairman, Kelly Diprose says, “For many years our top athletes
have tended to travel to other cities for their university studies. Now they have a very good
reason to stay in the Waikato. We are thrilled that the Hillary Scholarship Programme is also
attracting athletes to our region.”
There are currently three Athletics Hillary Scholars attending Waikato University and performing at very high levels in their respective athletic disciplines.
Charlotte Osborne from Morrinsville is in her third year at Waikato University studying for a Bachelor of Sport & Leisure Studies. She is currently in her second year as a Hillary Scholar. Charlotte was the winner of the New Zealand championships for 400m in the Women 19 grade and placed third in 200m. She narrowly missed selection for the New Zealand team to compete at the World Junior Championships in 2006.
Athletics is proud to have two new scholars added to the programme for 2007. Both come with high levels of achievement in Secondary School athletics, winning New Zealand Schools championship titles in 2006.
Daniel Stevenson has come to Waikato University from Cambridge High School where he was head boy. He is in his fi rst year of a Management Studies Degree. Daniel is one of New Zealand’s top young sprinters and was winner of the New Zealand Secondary Schools championship 200m for senior boys in December 2006. He is the current Waikato BOP champion for 100m and 200m in the Men 19 grade.
Megan Aikenhead from Motueka is Athletics’ fi rst South Island Scholar. Studying for a Bachelor of Sport & Leisure Studies Degree, Megan won the New Zealand Secondary Schools championship for Senior Girls’ Javelin last December. At the recent New Zealand Championships she placed fourth in both the Senior Women’s Javelin and the Women 19 Javelin.
These three athletes are all excited about the opportunities offered by the Hillary Scholarship Programme and are working hard to achieve their sporting and academic goals in a very supportive environment.
Athletics Waikato Bay of Plenty are very happy with the way the Hillary Programme is assisting these top athletes to study at Waikato University and at the same time to have the support of the other important opportunities the programme offers
JAMES GILL TAKES NZ STROKEPLAY TITLEUniversity of Waikato graduate and Hillary
Scholar James Gill won the New Zealand
men’s 72-hole stroke-play championship at
his home course, Hamilton Golf Club.
His win broke Australia’s dominance on the
title. The last New Zealander to win was Brad
Shilton at Middlemore in 2002
NIKKI COX AND REBECCA WRIGHT MAKE NZ TEAMSurf lifesavers Nikki Cox and Rebecca Wright
have been selected for the New Zealand
women’s team to compete at the International
Challenge in Bondi, Sydney at the end of the
year. Both students have also been named in
the World Squad for the 2008 Germany World
Championships.
Nikki Cox is studying towards a Management Studies
Degree, and is a New Zealand University Blues Award
fi nalist, with the awards being held in Wellington in
June this year. Nikki won gold in the surf ski race at
the 2006 World Surf Lifesaving Champs. As the
New Zealand surf lifesaving season has just ended,
Nikki will be working on endurance base training
over the winter, before tapering for the International
Challenge in December.
Rebecca Wright is currently
studying to be a primary school
teacher and is also completing her Sport and Leisure
Studies Degree. She has been surf lifesaving for
the past ten years, with her most recent successes
including winning the national open women’s fl ags
title in 2006 and 2007, placing second in both the
2006 and 2007 beach sprint, and placing fi rst in the
open women’s beach sprint at the national surf league.
Rebecca is considering doing some athletics races in
Australia prior to Bondi’s International Challenge
