Dear Delegates
It is my great pleasure and privilege to warmly welcome you to the 14th Biennial Congress of the Southern African Society for Cataract and Refractive Surgery in Durban.
We have an outstanding Faculty this year with many prominent experts from all over the World, as well as local speakers, to share their scientific knowledge with us in this excellent scientific program.
A huge welcome to Professor Spencer Thornton, whose efforts to publize this meeting was enormous! Thank you, Spence, for your support over many years!
The 21st century marks amazing advancement in all areas of ophthalmology, including cataract and refractive surgery. These advances assist us in knowledge and technology to safeguard eye health and eradicate blindness.
The Congress is also important socially as it gives us the opportunity to meet informally and to share ideas with our colleagues and to make new friends.
I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to the organising committee under the able Chairmanship of Dr Bill Nortjé. They have put a wonderful scientific and social programme together with the help of Christi Truter and her team. Well done, everyone!
I would like to thank each of you for coming to Durban and for supporting the SASCRS 2011 Congress.
We also welcome the Ophthalmic Trade and thank them for their contribution to this Congress. Without the generous contributions of the Trade, a Congress of this nature would not have been possible.
I sincerely hope that you will have a rewarding and fruitful experience from the Congress and have a pleas-ant and most enjoyable stay in Durban, the home of the Sharks rugby team.

Dear Delegates
On behalf of the SASCRS Organising Committee, I am delighted to welcome you to Durban for the XIV Biennial SASCRS Congress.
I would like to thank the members of the Programme Committee for the planning and effort that has gone into preparing the intense and superlative academic programme that we will enjoy over the next few days. Thanks also to Christi Truter, the Congress Convener, and Pam Anderson, who has once again put together a top class Social programme which will provide a wonderful opportunity for relaxation and networking after a long congress day.
We have taken the initiative to bring back the “Focus on Cataract”, which has been offered as a weekend package, and hopefully this will make SASCRS relevant to most Ophthalmologists in our developing country. An absolute highlight will be the interactive Video Symposium on Sunday morning which will allow delegates to be part of the action through the use of voting touchpads. There will also be the pre- and post-congress Safaris at the luxurious Phinda Reserve.
I hope you will find this Congress, and your visit to Durban, a rewarding and enjoyable experience.
Yours sincerely
Bill Nortje & Malcolm Carey Congress Conveners
