Student Volunteering Week 20th – 26th

February

RUSU want to make sure that students at Reading University have every opportunity to get involved in volunteering. The programme of

activities for Student Volunteering Week is designed to give you the opportunity to get an insight into volunteering through going to talks,

speaking to local groups and charities in need of volunteers and having a go at volunteering on one-off projects.

Details about all that is going on are given below. If you have any questions email the Societies and Volunteering Co-ordinator (Emily Shaw) at

Activities that have limited spaces are indicated. You need to sign up for this volunteering with Emily Shaw (Societies and Volunteering Co-

ordinator) who works in the Hub in the Students’ Union or by emailing volunteer@reading.ac.uk

Build a greenhouse! (Part 1)

10.30 – 3pm

Meet in the Hub at 10.15am

Your greenhouse needs you! Please help Little Learners Nursery (on campus) by coming along to help build an eco- friendly greenhouse. At this session we will be doing the hard work; building the frame and levelling the ground so wear old clothes that can get dirty. Launch of the NEW Volunteering Society

1 – 2pm The Lounge, Meeting Room 1

Can you not find quite the right voluntary project for you? Do you have a great idea for a new community project? If you are interested in having an active role in volunteering at Reading why not become part of the volunteering society committee? This meeting will discuss the aims of the society and various roles.

‘Voices of Reading’ – first rehearsal of Reading’s NEW community choir

7 – 8pm George Palmer Junior School

Inspired by Gareth Malone and the success at Christmas of his Military Wives choir; ‘Voices of Reading’ will bring together students, staff, local school children, their parents...the whole community basically! No singing experience required, just lots of enthusiasm.

Inspired by 2012? Getting involved in sports volunteering

RUSU Boardroom

So you’re didn’t make the GB team but still want to be part of the Olympic legacy? Berkshire County Sports Partnership will be talking about how to get more involved in sport as a volunteer. From running to rounders and hockey to hurdling, come along and find out how you can use your energy to help get Reading active!

Wed 22nd Feb

Volunteering Fayre 12 – 3pm

3Sixty A freshers’ fayre for volunteering! Over 25 organisations will be present, promoting volunteering opportunities on campus, in the local community and even internationally! Drop in at any point in the afternoon to find out about all that you could get involved with.

Wild flower planting on campus

1 – 3pm Meet in the Hub at 12.45pm

Have a green-fingered afternoon helping the Grounds Team plant wild flowers on campus. Email volunteer@reading.ac.uk if you would like to sign up for this session as spaces are limited

Thurs 23rd Feb

Why volunteer? 1-2pm Agriculture 1L16

...well, not just because it looks good on your CV. At this talk, Reading Voluntary Action – who are the experts when it comes to directing you to local voluntary opportunities – will provide you with a whole load more reasons to get involved!

Your greenhouse needs you! Please help Little Learners Nursery (on campus) by coming along to help build an eco friendly greenhouse out of 2 litre plastic bottles. Some of the children will be volunteering too so you have no excuses! Email volunteer@reading.ac.uk if you would like to sign up for this session as spaces are limited

Are you KEEN? 5 – 6pm Humss 125 KEEN (Kids Enjoy Exercise Now) is coming to Reading and we need YOU to make it work! The project is looking for a team of students to provide recreational activities to young people with physical and mental disabilities. This talk will tell you all about all the benefits of the scheme, and most importantly, why you should get involved!

Fri 24th Feb

Walking tour...of Lakeside Care Home

11 – 12 noon

Meet in the Hub at 10.45am

Just 15 minutes walk from campus, overlooking Whiteknights Lake live 42 elderly people, several of whom used to work at the university. If you think you may be interested in volunteering at Lakeside Care Home; perhaps helping at a weekly craft or exercise class or just popping along as a friendly face, come on this tour of the home and meet some of the residents.
