WelcomeBula vinaka and a very warm welcome to the Fiji 2011 International Jazz and Blues Festival at Port Denarau.

This festival has been made possible by the generous support of Air Pacifi c, Westpac Fiji and Tourism Fiji in conjunction with The Sheraton, Westin and Fiji Beach Resort and Spa managed by Hilton and all of the supporters listed in our programme.

All of the artists have been hand selected because of their world class musical talent and their commitment to give Fiji and her guests the very best performances they can. Over the next 4 days, you will see over 100 musicians play their hearts out for you to take you on a musical journey with the magical and beautiful backdrop that is Denarau and Fiji.

Some of the musicians you will see have come from as far as the UK, USA, Australia and New Zealand and these musicians, along with some of Fiji’s fi nest jazz musicians, will get your toes tapping, your feet moving and your heart jumping. One of my personal favourites to look out for will be the wonderful Mr Jazz of Fiji, Tom Mawi, who is a fantastic guitarist and person - and of course my mentor, Kevin Borich from Australia who will blow you away!

Over the next few days, at any time, please ask any of the festival team or Denarau guides for any information you may need and remember to keep your wrist bands on and tickets handy - especially for the fi nale draw, on Sunday, for a trip for two to our next Jazz and Blues festival.

In closing, I pray that you will have a wonderful, safe and entertaining time while at the festival here in Fiji, where our tag, ‘Music for the Soul in the Heart of Paradise’ is not just a phrase but a promise of a great experience.

God bless and vinaka vakalevu.

Laisa Vulakoro, Fiji

Mahia Blackmore, New Zealand

Briar Ross, New Zealand

Rick Stringer, New Zealand

The Desotos, New Zealand

Briar Ross Trio includes John Wilcox on keys and Russell McNaughton on bass guitar. Briar sings smooth jazz vocals in the style of Billy Holiday and Diana Krall, a selection of well known standards and some more unusual tunes.

Laisa, known in Fiji and throughout the Pacifi c as the VudeQueen, or ‘Pop Queen’ has been singing professionally for 15 years. Her style is primarily contemporary Fijian but she also performs a wide variety of styles from Jazz and Blues to Rock and Country. She has recorded 14 Albums and toured widely throughout the Pacifi c, Australia, New Zealand and America.

Laisa was rewarded in 2003, by the Government of France, for her long service to the development of music and the arts in Fiji and for her outstanding contributions to charity and community development projects.

Rick Stringer was born in Auckland and raised on a strict diet of New Orleans Jazz until being infected with The Blues on a pilgrimage to Chicago. Living close to Memphis in the early 90s further fuelled his love for Blues and Soul. A talented vocalist and blues harp player, Ramblin’ Rick has a husky sound once described as “Eric Clapton meets Joe Cocker” and his blues harp is moulded on the styles of Kim Wilson and Lee Oscar.

Songwriter/vocalists Steve Wigz and Gael Ludlow front Riverhead Slide with their own brand of sexy originals and blues standards. Riverhead Slide are possibly New Zealand’s most original blues band, favourites at Jazz and Blues festivals around the country.

The sound of the Auckland-based DeSotos has been described as “a powerful blend of rock-infused country blues”.
