Breakthrough Manchester is an affiliate of Breakthrough Collaborative, a national network of programs that touch the lives of thousands of youth through the "students teaching students" model. The Derryfield School is a coeducational, independent, college-preparatory day school currently serving 370 bright, motivated students in grades 6-12. Position Summary: The Program Director of Breakthrough Manchester oversees academic programming, is responsible for recruiting, selecting, and supervising high school and college student volunteers, and for hiring and supervising seasonal support staff. The Program Director also supports the Executive Director in advancement projects and initiatives that support the overall institutional success of Breakthrough. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Oversee middle school academic programs (summer and school year sessions). This includes: o designing and leading effective teacher training and support mechanisms o planning and overseeing program calendar/schedules, space usage, and logistics o evaluating programs and staff o assessing academic abilities and needs of each student participant o communicating a clear vision for curriculum, community, and quality of services o creating the environment for a successful and productive community of teachers and learners who value high-expectations, perseverance, leadership, and collaboration Recruit, select, and supervise: o talented high school and college students to teach in academic programs o excellent professional educators to serve as Instructional Coaches in summer and school year sessions Build and maintain strategic partnerships with organizations and schools that help further Breakthrough’s mission and advocate for the program’s interests in the wider community. Manage stipend budget and Elkin Teaching Fellowship funds. Collaborate with Breakthrough Collaborative and Breakthrough affiliates to align program to national standards and benchmarks. Create marketing and communications materials that support and complement program advancement efforts. Write grant proposals and reports to foundations, corporations and service organizations. Draft, edit and proofread fund raising materials produced by Breakthrough. Teach one section of a class or coach and advise students at The Derryfield School.

Skills and Knowledge:

Strong understanding of issues affecting educational equity and access to higher education as well as an appreciation of stages of adolescence from 10 to 23 years of age.

Familiarity with and ability to implement college-preparatory curricula.

Poised communicator and motivator; able to write and speak persuasively and to build and empower an effective team.

Excellent organization and leadership skills.

Ability to work independently and as part of a team with exceptional initiative and judgment.

Proven organizational skills, including the ability to initiate and follow through on ideas and projects, both independently and collaboratively.

Strategic and respectful "bridge builder" able to foster partnerships with people of diverse socio-economic, cultural, and political backgrounds, including partnerships within The Derryfield School community.

Proficiency with various computer and web-based applications including Microsoft Office and databases; proficiency with publishing and web software preferred.

Willingness and ability to work flexible hours, including select evenings and weekends.

Appreciation for and commitment to independent school education and culture. Education:

Four-year degree from an accredited college or university required; advanced degree preferred. Experience:

A minimum of three to five years of teaching and/or educational administration experience, or equivalent work experience required.

Prior experience with Breakthrough program or similar academic/youth organization preferred. Physical and Psychological Demands:

Must be physically and mentally capable of performing multiple tasks (such as phone calls, computer work, and receiving visitors) under stressful situations and able to consistently function well in a fast-paced environment.

Must be capable of using a visual display terminal with keyboard.

Must have a strong commitment to and ability to execute superior customer service.

Must be able to accept critical feedback and direction in a professional manner.

Must be a team player and consistently exhibit the following qualities: o Trustworthiness and the ability to fully trust other team members and superiors. o Ability to communicate timely and in a professional manner to address conflicts. o Strong evidence of commitment and loyalty to the program. o Strong evidence of ownership and accountability for work and mistakes. o Consistent and superior attention to details and results.
