I. National Recognition for HempsteadWorks The HempsteadWorks Health Care Summer Youth Employment Program was selected in December of 2011, as an Innovative Practice by the National Association of Workforce Development Professionals (NAWDP) and the National Collaborative on Workforce and Disability for Youth (NCWD/Youth). A description of the project was published on NCWD/Youth Blog. From the year 2003 to the present, this program has provided employment and training for 122 low income youth.

II. HempsteadWorks Grant Projects The following are grant projects conducted by HempsteadWorks in Program Year 2011:

A. Summer Jobs Express! In the summer of 2011, at a time when federal allocations for youth programs had been reduced, the New York State Department of Labor (NYSDOL) awarded a competitive grant to the HempsteadWorks to operate the Summer Jobs Express! Program. Through this grant, HempsteadWorks provided paid Work Experience in the form of summer jobs to low-income, in-school and out-of-school youth, ages 16 to 21. The youth also participated in Work Readiness Training that was aligned with the competencies required for the National Work Readiness Credential, and using the Steck-Vaughn Work Skills Curriculum™, which is the only curriculum

endorsed by the National Work Readiness Council. This curriculum includes pre-and post-tests that measure the acquisition of work readiness skills, including: Math, Reading, Situational Judgment and Active Listening. The youth also received supportive services payments for transportation expenses. Under the program, young people from high-need areas, who might otherwise have been unemployed, earned wages, gained experience and acquired valuable skills to be applied in their future careers. Under the Summer Jobs Express! Program the following outcomes were achieved:

B. Long Island Forum for Technology - U.S. Small Business Administration – Small Business Teaming Pilot Program

In Program Year 2011, the Long Island Forum for Technology (LIFT) was one of only 11 organizations in the nation to receive a U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) – Small Business Teaming Pilot Program Grant. LIFT is using funding under the grant to harness the knowledge and skills of Long Island’s regional rail suppliers to attract a larger market for products and services. The grant also provides a platform for Long Island Small Business Teams to bid on large procurement opportunities in railroad infrastructure, logistics, and security. This project is closely aligned with LIFT’s Rail Alliance: Infrastructure, Logistics and Security (RAILS) initiative. Under the SBA Grant, HempsteadWorks is a subcontractor to LIFT responsible for identifying minority-owned small businesses to participate in and benefit from the program.

C. Career Connections Program

Under the Nassau Library System’s Career Connections Program, funded by the Service and Technology Act - Service Improvement Invitational Grant Program, in Program Year 2011, HempsteadWorks conducted job clubs for library patrons and train-the-trainer sessions to train library staff to provide workforce services.

D. On-The- Job Training Program - National Emergency Grant

Under an On-The-Job Training (OJT) -National Emergency Grant awarded in December of 2011, by NYSDOL to HempsteadWorks, 15 long-term unemployed dislocated workers participated in OJT with the following employers:

American Carpet and Restoration Services Ausco, Inc. Cooling, Heating & Beyond Cornell Cooperative Extension David Miller Agency Green Earth Insulation & Energy Savers Josef’s Woodworking New York Injet Quarksoft

E. Hurricane Irene National Emergency Grant

In October of 2011, NYSDOL awarded a Disaster National Emergency Grant to HempsteadWorks through which it placed 31 temporary workers with the County of Nassau Department of Parks and the City of Long Beach Department of Public Works to assist in the recovery of damage caused by Hurricane Irene.



F. United Way of Long Island Citi Prosperity Center Grant

In December of 2011, the United Way of Long Island awarded a grant to HempsteadWorks funded by its Citi Prosperity Center Grant. With these funds, HempsteadWorks conducted a Financial Literacy Workshop for 15 jobseekers.

III. Service Highlights The number of customers served by the HempsteadWorks System in Program Year 2011 was 26,874. The following are comments from our customers:

IV. HempsteadWorks Career Center—A Place to Recruit New Workers Some of the business services offered by HempsteadWorks include:

• Recruitment of new workers;

• Assistance in accessing grant funds to train new and current employees;

• Development of On-The-Job Training and Customized Training Programs;

• Information regarding tax credits and financial incentives.

HempsteadWorks participated in several job fairs during the Program Year, conducted at public libraries in Baldwin, East Rockaway and Lynbrook.

V. Career Workshop Series Through funding provided by Nassau Community College, under a Perkins Grant, HempsteadWorks provided a series of workshops in a variety of job search topics.

VI. Microsoft Office Pre-Vocational Skills Training Program A Pre-Vocational Skills Training Program was provided at the HempsteadWorks Career Center to provide our customers with instruction in Microsoft Office programs.



VII. Career Flash One of the most important assets for landing the right job is “information.” As a service to our customers, HempsteadWorks provided a series of informative job search guides, filled with up-to-the minute tips, through a periodic communiqué entitled Career Flash. By saving each volume of Career Flash in a binder or portfolio, our customers can create a comprehensive reference source to guide their job search campaign.

VIII. GED Review and Workplace Literacy Program HempsteadWorks and Nassau Community College teamed up to create a powerful 6-week GED Review and Workplace Literacy Program for 13 Out-of-School Youth that offered: • GED Review, covering Language Arts,

Math, Social Studies and Science;

• Test-taking skills instruction;

• Valuable labor market information;

• Inside tips on how to get the job you really want and how to progress along career pathways, and

• Career Counseling and Job Placement assistance provided at the HempsteadWorks Career Center in Hempstead.
