Managing Director Update
One of the exci ng things to come
out of the BARS Program is the
posi ve impact that this is having on
the closure rate of findings.
In this edi on, we provide a summary review of
findings derived from 87 BARS Audits conducted
around the globe. The good news is that most of
these findings have been closed or are in the
process of being closed through agreed
correc ve ac on plans.
We have two new organiza ons that have
joined the BARS Program. WorleyParsons are
the latest company to join the Program as a
BARS Member Organiza on. Hart Avia on has
become the eighth Audit Company accredited
under the BARS Program.
Also in this edi on, we introduce a new tool that
is being made available to BARS Member
Organiza ons. This tool is designed to assist
personnel with assessing the risk of certain
types of opera ons in a variety of condi ons.
Finally, the latest version of the BAR Standard,
V4, has been released in Spanish as well as
Russian. These can be accessed from the
website and the Spanish is available in hard copy
form via this office.
Courses
By now, many of you will be familiar with the
Avia on Coordinator (AVCO) courses that have
been facilitated around various parts of the
globe, principally for on‐shore resource sector
personnel. This course has recently undergone a
review and update to ensure that it remains
contemporary.
We are also well underway with the
development of an AVCO course designed for
off‐shore opera ons that will become available
later this year. The Ground Opera ons for
External Loads course is also under development
and is expected to be available at the end of this
year. Further updates will be provided in our
next newsle er and via
BARSo .

New BARS Member Organization—WorleyParsons
WorleyParsons is the latest organization to join the BARS Program as a BARS Member Organization. WorleyParsons is a global provider of technical, project and operational services to
the mining and oil & gas sectors. Like most organizations within the industry, they utilize outsourced aviation to support their activities. We welcome WorleyParsons on-board and look forward to their contribution toward enhancing the Program.

New Avia on Risk Tool for Member Organiza ons
A new tool based on the BAR Stand‐ard will shortly be available for BARS Member Organiza ons.
The tool was developed by Newcrest Mining and
has been made available for use by other BMOs
through the Founda on.
The tool, designed to be used via the company’s
intranet site, will assist management and other
personnel with conduc ng risk assessments of
ac vi es involving avia on support against the
BAR Standard.
To assist with op mizing the tool’s use for your
site, the original developers of the so ware can
tailor it to suit.
Please contact the Program Office for further
informa on on the use of this tool.
100th BARS Audit
A milestone has been reached with Karratha Flying Services (KFS) having undertaken the 100th Audit of the BARS Program.
The company is based in the Pilbara of Western
Australia and has been providing charter services
to major resource clients in the region since their
incep on. They operate a fleet of 7 twin‐engine
aircra , including three King Air and a Beechcra
1900C.
In January 2010 KFS commenced a contract with
BHP Billiton Iron Ore to operate its Pilbara Air
Service between Port Hedland, Newman and
Shay Gap, with a dedicated King Air B200 aircra .
Their most recent BARS Audit was their second
and the 100th completed under the BARS
Program.
FSF BARS Safety Alerts BARS Member Organiza ons will now be able to receive Safety Alerts generated from the BARS Program Office (BPO). These Safety Alerts will be derived from safety informa on forwarded to the BPO by Member Organiza ons. The infor‐ma on will be de‐iden fied, where this has not already occurred, and distributed to other Mem‐
ber Organiza ons via BARSo . The BPO has recently released four Safety Alerts concerning: stabilized approaches; aerodrome opera ons; aircra ELT installa ons and data derived from BARS Audits. Informa on for sharing via Safety Alerts can be forwarded to [email protected] or can be sent to Greg Marshall at [email protected]

About the BAR Standard
Many resource sector companies rely on chartered aircra operators for a number of support ac vi es including, most importantly, the movement of company personnel. The aircra suppor ng these ac vi es range from small single‐engine helicopters to transport category jet aircra , u lized in a variety of challenging environments.
Standard
The BAR Standard was developed from an industry‐iden fied need to establish a common safety audit standard that could be applied to resource sector avia on support ac vi es. It provides contrac ng companies with the level of safety assurance required by their respec ve organiza ons. The Standard was developed from a risk‐based model framed against the actual threats posed to avia on opera ons. It directly links these to associated controls and recovery and mi ga on measures, as opposed to the outdated prescrip ve format previously used within the industry.
The Standard provides a consistent audit model that allows member resource companies to share in the audits of operators, all of whom have been subject to a consistent standard of audit.
