About the Club Sleepy Hollow Blues Club was formed in 1994 by a dedicated group of blues lovers and meets

every fourth Sunday in the month except De-

cember and January for top-class blues.

There are frequent social events, featuring a

wide variety of local and visiting musicians.

Over the years, the club has welcomed interna-

tional artists such as Guy Davis, Bob Brozman and Wolf Mail. Top Aussie acts have included Chain, Jeff Lang, Ash Grunwald, Geoff Achison, Andrew Winton, Fiona Boyes, The Detonators, Third Degree, Dutch Tilders,

Spectrum and Chris Wilson – not to mention the cream of local talent including Muddy Puddles, Stringybark McDowell, Grizzly Bros, Lounge Lizards, Wayne Jury, Chubby Rae

& The Elevators, Sweet Felicia and the Honeytones and many, many more.

The Bluestone Festival, held every New Year’s Eve, is the highlight of the club’s activi-ties, with attendances of up to 700, as blues lovers and their families from Geelong and

all over the country flock to enjoy two days of great music, friendship and dancing. Most people camp overnight, and the well-stocked bar, hot and cold food stalls and merchan-

dise ensure that everyone is catered for.

The club is associated with other blues clubs around Australia, including the Melbourne Blues Appreciation Society and the South Australian Blues Society, and members

are welcome at other clubs’ functions.

Membership entitles you to all kinds of benefits, such as discounts from sponsors, free or discount entry to club functions, and a monthly newsletter. The financial benefits are

clear – if you attend only four blues sessions throughout the year and purchase a club T-shirt, you’ve already made your money back – from then on, everything you come along to is money in your pocket! Membership applies annually from August 1 each year, and

if you join in June or July of any year, we’ll give you the additional months free. New members are always welcome – just call Daryl Unthank (Membership) or any of the com-

mittee if you would like to become a member or if you would like more information.

A Few Friendly Reminders You must keep your wristband on at all times. If you do not have your wristband on, you

will not be able to be served food or drinks and will not be admitted into the festival area.

There is a wider selection of food available this year with additional food vans in attend-

ance. There are also hot and cold drinks including beer, spirits, soft drinks and iced wa-

ter for sale.

There is a total ban on open fires and BBQs because of the extreme fire danger, as the

district is very dry. This also includes fireworks, as these can be very disturbing to local

livestock. Also, remember to butt out cigarettes properly.

Parents, please keep an eye on your children. We don’t want them getting into trouble or

spoiling the occasion for others.

Strictly no fires, no glass, no BYO and no dogs.

Please try to keep the area clean and dispose of all your rubbish and cans in the correct,

marked bins supplied for this purpose and remove any campsite rubbish when leaving..

If you need first aid due to accident or medical condition, the first aid area is near the

food and drinks area (see back page map).

If you need any other help or want information about the club, Sleepy Hollow Blues Club

Committee members will try to help you. Look for the people with the blue Committee

tags.

The last reminder is to have fun and enjoy the Festival. Don’t drive home if you have had

too much to drink, sleep the night. There is plenty of camping area.

IN CASE OF FIRE OR OTHER EMERGENCY PLEASE MOVE DIRECTLY TO THE OVAL

This is the 24th Bluestone Blues Festival.

The name of our festival came from the bluestone walls of the Inverleigh Hotel where our first festival was held in 1996, an amazing event that is still talked about today. The Bluestone Festival has evolved since then and continues to present top blues mu-

sic, a fun atmosphere and provide good memories to the many thousands who will at-tend and have attended over the years.

Bluestone has two aims—to showcase local blues talent and to bring great blues play-

ers to an appreciative audience in the Geelong region. This year once again we have some top local talent — Brian Fraser and Dave “Bastard” Keellings, and Dog Gone South (Dave Dorman). From further afield around Victoria we have The Jump Cats,

Amnesia Blues Band, the Detonators, Geoff Achison and the Souldiggers, and Jimi Hocking’s Blues Machine. From up north we have Nathan Beretta as well as the Shane Pacey Trio. Check them, and the others, on pages 6 - 8.

We aim to enjoy the blues and ensure it continues on in Geelong. A huge thank you to all those who have helped get the 2019 Bluestone Festival up and going once again.

All the best for 2020 to our members, sponsors, friends and family, now for the music!

Brian Fraser and Dave the Bastard Brian Fraser will be bringing his finger picking blues show to the Sleepy Hollow Blues Club Bluestone Festival in 2019. He will be joined on stage with Dave (The Bastard) Keelling’s on harmonica and general mayhem. Brian and Dave worked together for many years in the band Turning Blue.

The last few years have seen them often together on The Blues Train performing or at the occasional show around Geelong. The New Year’s Eve show will include some of Brian’s solo material plus a few old Turning Blue tunes

Brian is a multi-award-winning artist with over 40 years’ experience in the music industry and has had a number of CD releases solo and with bands. He spends many months of every year touring Australia, performing at festivals, hotels and a multitude of other venues.

Jump Cats The Jump Cats are a Melbourne four-piece band with Mark 'Harpo' Greenway on guitar, Jeff Walters on double bass, Alf Mott on the skins and Chris 'Stibbo' Hanger blues harp and vocals.

Jump Cats specialise in a form of blues known as jump blues. This is an up-tempo style of blues, usually played by small groups. It was popular in the 1940s and was a precursor of rhythm and blues and rock and roll.

It evolved from the music of big bands such as those of Lionel Hampton and Lucky Millinder. These bands of the early 1940s produced musicians such as Louis Jordan, Jack McVea, Earl Bostic, and Arnett Cobb.

Jump blues was revived in the 1980s by artists such as Joe Jackson and Brian Setzer and in the 1990s was popularised as part of the swing revival.

Nathan Beretta Band Nathan Beretta is the funnest blues musician this side of the Great Divide!

Nathan made his mark in the Australian blues scene with multiple award winning blues band Blue Eyes Cry.

Beretta’s debut release Where I Belong hit No.1 on the Australian blues and roots charts, and is already gaining respect from blues lovers all over.

Growing up with blues, jazz and soul in the household, Nathan has brought his own unique style to the table.

Influenced by artist such as Ronnie Earl, Albert Collins, Albert King and Buddy Guy, Na-than plays from the soul with a “all killer no filler” approach.

After taking a year off music, Nathan is back on a mission to put the “edge” back in into the blues, with vibrato bending guitar solos and emotion.

The Nathan Beretta band is a known, yet new act on the scene and is not to be missed if authentic blues is your thing.

The Detonators The Detonators were formed way back in August 1997.But it seems like only yesterday! Al-ways based in Melbourne Australia this popular hard-working quartet have never been afraid to hit the road, haul some kilometres and rack up a heap of gigs. They believe they have easily done more than 3000 gigs since they first formed. The Detonators have a finely-honed array of original songs and a stage show that only comes from years of gigging pubs, clubs and festi-vals. Their relentless gigging and touring over vast distances through the years both in Austral-ia and overseas has seen them become crowned kings of Australian roots rock n roll. Their original music, to which all members contribute, is best described as a lethal combination of early blues with a sprinkling of rockabilly and early rock n roll thrown in.

The band features bespectacled Rockbottom James on vocals and electric harmonica, Paulie Bignell on hollow body guitar, Doghouse Dave on slapping double bass with Eddie Fury on sticks and skins duty. There are six Cd’s in their arsenal and a book currently being written about the bands exploits over 22 years which will be available mid to late 2020. The Detona-tors are always on rotation on radio, Spotify, Apple Music, iTunes, YouTube etc, and have had their music on the local film Charlie and Boots as well as the Australian Crime TV series Un-derbelly. Thunder Road Brewing have used their songs in radio ads, and top-rated American TV series De Grassi High also uses Detonators music. Dancing shoes, listening ears and drink-ing arms are compulsory for any good time Detonators show, because you never know what Rockbottom James is going to do or say next!

Geoff Achison and the Souldiggers From Melbourne to Memphis, Aussie blues/roots artist Geoff Achison has thrilled audiences around the world with his dynamic blues playing and gutsy solo arrangements.

A highly regarded guitarist, singer and songwriter, Geoff is equally adept at acoustic and electric styles. He can provide the full electrifying experience with his outstanding blues/rock combo The Souldiggers, or play a complete solo show with his superb command of the acoustic guitar. Whilst regarded as a Guitarists Guitarist, Geoff is also an all-round performer who delights in entertaining the audience with his wry sense of humour. His music is firmly steeped in the blues, but he injects funk, soul, jazz and even classical styles into the mix.

Geoff has been a driving force on the Aussie Blues/Roots scene, inspiring and influencing many of his younger compatriots. He enjoys the teaching aspect of his craft, presenting a number of workshops each year and appearing as a regular guest instructor at Jorma Kaukonen’s famous Fur Peace Ranch guitar camp in Ohio. The Melbourne Blues Appreciation Society named Geoff Achison their official ‘Patron’ in 2011.

In 2014 Geoff celebrated 20 years with The Souldiggers with a retrospective in-concert perfor-mance, all captured on CD/DVD. In 2017 Geoff Achison released Another Mile Another Mi-nute, his first all-original studio album in 8 years. This release also featured The Souldiggers and an impressive list of guest artists. It was picked up by US label Landslide Records and scooped the pool at the 2017 ‘Chain’ Australian Blues Awards winning in 5 categories.

Dog Gone South Dog Gone South are a busy, well-honed touring blues outfit, featuring Dave Dor-man on guitar, double stomps and vocals.

Dave performs solo and duo gigs and is joined regularly by a range of accom-plished musicians including, Chris Canning, Luke Davies, Rudi Katterl and Eddy Boyle.

Their brand of straight-ahead foot stomping blues has gained them much populari-ty, opening the door to a range of festivals and venues across the country.

The duos debut album, Bring Ya Foot and Stomp It, has sold over 500 copies in the first 12 months of release.

Dog Gone South are riding on a blues revival in around the country.

From Melbourne to Cooktown, from Beechworth to Adelaide, they are one of the busiest blues acts from the south and clock up over 120 gigs annually.

Amnesia Blues Band Amnesia Blues Band are a traditional blues band, bringing you original blues with stories of hard drinkin' women, lost loves and broken dreams and have been playing together since early 2013.

2016 saw the release of their debut album, "We Still Remember" featuring 8 original songs and 4 ‘not-so-obvious’ covers. The CD is available for purchase now from their website.

In September 2016 the band was voted MBAS Vic/Tas Band of The Year. The band were finalists in the MBAS International Blues Challenge in 2016 & 2017.

The 5-piece band features: Paul "Buck" Buchanan ‑ Acoustic Guitar, Vo-cals. Paul is the main songwriter in the band. Stuart Anderson – Drums. Stuart has been playing drums most of his life, but as one of the younger band members, his Amnesia is not as advanced. Sandy Clark ‑ Lead Gui-tar. After a couple of years on bass, we threw Clags a couple of extra strings, a slide and a plectrum and let him bring the boogie. Ning Hopkins ‑ Lead Guitar. We asked Ning to jump up to fill in for a gig when we were short a man. He was so good we didn’t let him leave. Salty Dennis Trevarthen / Barry Walker – Harmonica. Salty Dog brings the grit with his impressionistic blues harp and unauthorised percussion. At other times, Barry displays a fine selection of jandals and vintage harp mics to go with the growl. Dar-ryl Kerr ‑ Bass Guitar. Darryl holds it down rock-steady in the rhythm department.

Jimi Hocking's Blues Machine Jimi Hocking is a songwriter, singer and guitarist of the highest calibre, the electric love child of T-Bone Walker, BB King and Jimi Hendrix. He struts the stage with his band, playing his ‘showy’ guitar style while pulling all the classic stunts ... behind the head ... the duck walk ... even the splits!

The mid-1980's was when Jimi cut his teeth, playing hundreds of pub shows fronting bands like The Astroboys and The Astros.

The combination of his high-speed picking and blues bends left an indelible impression on many guitarists ... including Joe Satriani, Edgar Winter and George Thorogood, all with whom Jimi toured.

In fact, when Jimi played a little guitar to Blues Legend BB King in1989 (while he vis-ited Australia with U2) BB exclaimed, "I've been watching you ... and you're good!"

Jimi is the winner of the Melbourne Blues Appreciation Society Performer of the Year in 2005 and International Blues Challenge in Memphis in February 2006. He is also a three-time CAV Best Acoustic Performer award winner. In 2010, Jimi won the VIC/Tas Award for Band of the Year and Album of the Year.

Shane Pacey Trio The Shane Pacey Trio comes all the way from Sydney.

This band has a big history and we are absolutely blown away that they will be gracing the Bluestone 2019/20 stage.

What an interesting history Shane has.

With this band, he is going back to where it all started for him.

The guitar playing/singing of Peter Green and the short sharp style coming out of Chess Records in the 50’s and 60s.

His dedication to blues music is has always been his journey and this band plays so rarely in Victoria so it will be a amazing opportunity to see him play at Bluestone 2019/20 in our renowned laid back venue.

His other band of course is the Bondi Cigars.

Shane will be bringing with him: on bass guitar Paul Blasi and on drums Dave Fester... Do I need say more?

Camping Caution!

In 2014 Katie Broadbent was killed by her partner's best friend, 24-year-old Westmere man John Forbes, when he reversed over her tent — in which she was sleeping — at a fes-tival in Rochester. It wasn't until three hours later when her boyfriend found her body in

the tent, but Forbes had no memory of what happened.

The trial consequently saw Forbes, who was found to be under the influence of drugs and

alcohol at the time of the incident, jailed for four years over the death.

The incident has given rise to calls for an investigation into how music festivals are organ-

ised and executed, with special focus being paid to the way in which camping areas and

arrangements are handled.

At Bluestone, we need you to be aware of where you are parking your vehicle, placing your tent or swag and where those around you are setting up. People may arrive at the festival

late at night.

Park cars on the edge of the oval if possible.

Please look around you and think!

About the Club For over twenty years, since 1994, the Sleepy Hollow Blues Club has been meeting regularly to hear the best of blues, both local and from

further afield.

A feature of these events is the jam session before the headline gig. All are welcome to join in the jam session. Over the years a number of musicians and groups who honed their skills at

the jam sessions have gone on to wider fields.

We assist our local and regional young musicians by sponsoring the Blues Boot Camp hosted by

Wayne Jury.

The annual Club highlight is the Bluestone Blues Festival held over New Year’s Eve. We’ve had up to 700 people come along, camp and enjoy the music, friendship and dancing. There’s a well-stocked bar, hot and cold food, stalls and merchandise to ensure that everyone is catered for. The name ‘Bluestone’ came from the walls of the Inverleigh Hotel where our first Festival was held in 1996. Since then, Bluestone has contin-ued to present top blues music, a fun atmosphere
