WELCOME

Tonight, we welcome back our Principal Conductor Asher Fisch for our final concerts for the year, and take a stroll through 19th century France. Out of the three works in tonight’s program, one has never been performed by WASO, one was last performed in 1968 and one was last performed in 2013. I’ll let you all guess which piece is which!

The concert overture Polyeucte was Dukas’ public debut and was composed the year after he graduated from the Conservatoire in Paris. Although it is rarely performed, it has a rich orchestral score and many sumptuous melodies. Considering Dukas was writing a review for Wagner’s Ring Cycle in the same year, it is not at all surprising that this work shows the influence of Wagner’s harmonic innovations and orchestral colours.

Although overshadowed by both the other Romantic cello concerti, and even his own Symphonie espagnole, Lalo’s Cello Concerto is a delightful, albeit rarely performed work that evokes the Spanish atmosphere that attracted French composers at the end of the century. We are delighted to have Alban Gerhardt back in Perth to perform this work.

We finish our 2016 Classics Series with the radical and revolutionary Symphonie fantastique, which is inspired by an infatuation (some might say obsession) with actress Harriet Smithson (the Beloved). Throughout this work, the Beloved is represented by a special motif, the idée fixe, which is moulded in each movement to convey how she changes or how his feelings towards her change. The first movement is a dream, the second, a glittering ball where the artist is haunted by the sight of his Beloved. After a country scene, the fourth movement slips into nightmare. He dreams that he has killed his Beloved, and is condemned to death and led to execution. He then sees himself at his own funeral, a witches’ sabbath, in the midst of a hideous gathering of sorcerers and monsters of every kind.

It is debated whether Symphonie fantastique was the result of an opium-induced hallucination or whether it was just the result of a fevered imagination? I’ll let you all decide.

WASO Return from Exceptional TourThe West Australian Symphony Orchestra has returned to Perth following performances and ecstatic receptions in Abu Dhabi, Beijing and Shanghai, from October 6-12. WASO is now Australia’s first major performing arts company to tour to the United Arab Emirates, where the Orchestra opened the 2016-17 Abu Dhabi Classics season. WASO then performed in the prestigious Beijing Music Festival – a concert that was streamed live by over 586,000 Chinese viewers via LeTV, and presented the Festival’s first ever education performances to two of China’s leading schools.

“This experience was utterly overwhelming for everyone involved”, said Craig Whitehead, WASO’s Chief Executive.

We have known our Orchestra is performing at an exceptional standard, but these performances propelled WASO to the world stage, where we received the most rapturous, unrelenting applause I’ve ever witnessed. It was the same in each city, and this confirms the outstanding calibre of our Orchestra.”

“Our artistic excellence has cemented our relationships with these regions, and we have already received invitations to return to both Abu Dhabi and China.”

WASO’s 2016 International Tour was made possible with the generous support of the Government of Western Australia, Rio Tinto, Barbagallo Motors, COMO The Treasury, Lepley Properties, Metals of Africa, Pierro Wines, Singapore Airlines and through generous donations from many philanthropic partners.

Asher FischPrincipal Conductor & Artistic Adviser

Asher Fisch’s first two seasons with WASO included a range of classical repertoire, a Beethoven Symphony Cycle in 2014 and a Brahms Festival in 2015, both Western Australian firsts.

A seasoned conductor in both the operatic and symphonic worlds, he is known best for his interpretative command of German and Italian repertoire of the Romantic and post-Romantic era, in particular Wagner, Brahms, Strauss and Verdi. He is currently Principal Guest Conductor of the Seattle Opera, where he conducted its quadrennial Wagner Ring cycle in 2013, and his former posts include Music Director of the New Israeli Opera (1998-2008) and the Vienna Volksoper (1995-2000). He first worked with WASO in 1999.

He has long maintained strong ties to the Bavarian State Opera, and in the 2013-14 season conducted a new production by Martin Kušej of The Force of Destiny, plus revival performances of Parsifal, Salome, Ariadne auf Naxos, La bohème and Turandot. Other highlights of the 2013-14 season included concerts with the Munich Philharmonic; Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra; National Orchestra of Belgium; Aarhus Symphony Orchestra (Denmark);

a tour in Italy with the Orchestra della Toscana; and a visit to the Melbourne Festival in October 2013, where he conducted an all-Wagner program with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.

He conducted the State Opera of South Australia’s Wagner Ring cycle in 2005, which won ten Helpmann Awards. Asher Fisch began his conducting career as Daniel Barenboim’s assistant and kapellmeister at the Berlin State Opera. He is an accomplished pianist and released his first solo disc of Wagner piano transcriptions in 2012.

Paul Dukas (1865 - 1935)

Polyeucte – Overture for Corneille’s tragedy

In the 1630s, French tragedian Pierre Corneille fell out with both his patron, Cardinal Richelieu, and the Académie française over his play Le Cid which was deemed ‘immoral’ and, worse, was accused of failing to observe the Aristotelian ‘unities’ of classical drama. After a period of soul-searching Corneille returned to the stage in 1640, producing a group of ‘classical’ tragedies of which the third was Polyeucte. Set in what is now Turkey and Armenia, then under Roman rule, the story is that of St Polyeuctes, an Armenian nobleman and Roman army officer who converts to Christianity and is martyred for refusing to worship – and for destroying – idols. Corneille’s play features Polyeuctes’ wife, Paulina, and her father Felix, who also convert to Christianity.

Dukas’ concert overture was performed in 1892 at the young composer’s Paris debut. Like Tchaikovsky’s works in this genre, it is effectively a symphonic poem that outlines the drama, though its musical language is almost purely Wagnerian.

The first of five sections features a brooding chromatic theme in unison strings, which is taken up by solo oboe and elaborated in counterpoint of great pathos. Emphatic tutti unisons introduce a second theme in a turbulent new section.

The third, central section is calm at first, dominated by chorale-figures for the horns, a plangent cor anglais, muted strings and wind solos. Growing turbulence leads to a new statement of the second section that is brutally interrupted, before a final section of high tessitura, luminous colours and pure major-key tonality.

Edouard Lalo (1823 – 1892)

Cello Concerto in D minor Prelude (Lento – Allegro maestoso) Intermezzo (Andantino con moto – Allegro presto) Introduction (Andante) – Allegro vivace

Lalo studied violin and cello at the Lille Conservatoire and then in Paris, where he supported himself by teaching and as a freelance player. In the 1850s he was founding member (as violist) of the Armingaud Quartet, which had been formed to popularise the music of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven, then little known in Paris. Not surprisingly, Lalo’s practical knowledge of string instruments makes his concertos for violin (Symphonie espagnole and one other, both for the great virtuoso Sarasate) and cello (composed in 1877 for Adolphe Fischer) idiomatic works of great mastery.

The Cello Concerto is in three substantial movements. The first begins with a slow-ish introduction with a mildly louring orchestral theme in unison that is illuminated by terse flashes of brass and wind colour. (A feature of Lalo’s orchestration is that it never overwhelms the cello: the soloist speaks against quiet backgrounds, with powerful tutti effects used as punctuation.) The soloist enters soon after, offering ruminative glimpses of the themes to come; the subsequent Allegro pits a strongly profiled first theme against a more lyrical second subject, which is often accompanied by winds in simple hymn-like harmony.

The second movement continues the use of structural contrast, with alternating episodes of traditional, lyrical slow-movement and faster, dance-like scherzo material.

Like the first movement, the finale begins with a ruminative introduction, for solo cello, before a rondo whose main material gives ample opportunity for the soloist to shine. Again, there are powerful full-orchestral effects but these throw the sparsely accompanied cello episodes into high relief.

Abridged from a note by Gordon Kerry © 2016

First performance: 9 December 1877, Paris. Adolphe Fischer, soloist; Jules Pasdeloup, conductor.First WASO performance: 12-13 August 1963. John Farnsworth Hall, conductor; Brian Meddemmen, soloist. Most recent WASO performance: 28-29 June 1968. Uri Mayer, conductor; Rohan de Saram, soloist.Instrumentation: two flutes, two oboes, two clarinets, two bassoons, four horns, two trumpets, three trombones, timpani and strings.

Rondo – a musical form where a main idea (refrain) alternates with a series of musical episodes. Classical composers often wrote the final movement of their symphonic works in rondo form.Scherzo – literally, a joke; the term generally refers to a movement in a fast, light triple time which may involve whimsical, startling or playful elements.Subject – a principal theme, or group of themes, on which a composition is based. Symphonic works, and especially first movements, often feature two contrasting subjects.Tutti – all the instruments of the orchestra playing at the same time.

Hector Berlioz (1803 – 1869)

Symphonie fantastique, Op.14Dreams, Passions (Largo – Allegro agitato e appassionato assai)A Ball (Valse: Allegro non troppo)Scene in the Fields (Adagio)March to the Scaffold (Allegretto non troppo)Dream of the Witches’ Sabbath (Larghetto – Allegro)

The first performance of the Symphonie fantastique on 5 December 1830 marked a turning-point in Berlioz’s career. It was through this work that he first became known; his extensive influence on 19th-century composers dates from it. For those in the audience it was also a significant event; for despite its apparent obeisance to classical procedures, this sounded like no music ever heard before.

The actual music of the Symphonie fantastique is surrounded by a thick hedge of literary and biographical associations. Berlioz himself is largely responsible for this. Firstly there is the tale of Harriet Smithson, the Irish actress whose portrayal of Ophelia had captured Berlioz’s imagination. In 1830 he wrote to a friend that the Symphonie was to depict the development of his ‘infernal passion’ for Miss Smithson. Twenty years and two disastrous marriages later, he wrote in his Memoirs that the work had been written under the influence of Goethe’s Faust. But the early association stuck well.

A more imposing literary obstacle is the elaborate program which Berlioz himself devised, and which he originally directed should accompany the Symphonie whenever it was played. It deals with a young musician, in the toils of a desperate passion for a woman who embodies his romantic ideal.

The vagaries of feeling occasioned by his passion are the subject of the first movement. In the following movements we see him in various situations: at a ball, in the midst of nature in the country, in the grip of an opium dream witnessing his own execution, and partaking in a witches’ sabbath, where his beloved appears transformed into a demon’s harlot.

The program is of considerable interest in itself as an index of artistic preoccupations at that time: the discovery of the unconscious (the opium dream), the interest in the demoniac, the fascination with the monstrous and bizarre – the ‘fantastic’ of the work’s title. Despite its inherent literary interest, much debate has centred on the relevance of the program to the actual music of the Symphonie. There is no doubt that Berlioz captured the contemporary imagination very well with it, and, more practically, that it helped the audience to accept more readily the strangeness of the music in those early performances. But is the program anything more than a ‘promotional aid’?

The movements are grouped symmetrically on either side of the central movement, the Scene in the Fields. The drama develops in an arc. It rises to its point of crisis with the appearance of the allegro theme in the Adagio third movement. From there it descends to the catastrophe in the Dream of the Witches’ Sabbath, where the original identity of the allegro theme is destroyed by the forces of parody that are so potent in this movement.

Berlioz continued to develop his dramatic symphonic ideal in Harold in Italy – with its solo viola ‘hero’ – and in Roméo et Juliette, where symphonic form is further enlarged to embrace a Shakespeare play. But perhaps he never again succeeded as perfectly as he does here in the Symphonie fantastique.

Abridged from a note © Kay Dreyfus

First performance: 5 December 1830, Paris.First WASO performance: 28/30 April 1951. Henry Krips, conductor. Most recent WASO performance: 29-30 November 2013. Paul Daniel, conductor.Instrumentation: two flutes (one doubling piccolo), two oboes (one doubling cor anglais), two clarinets (one doubling E flat clarinet), four bassoons, four horns, two trumpets, two cornets, three trombones, two ophicleides (traditionally played by tubas), timpani, percussion, two harps, strings.

Berlioz revised the program four times, modifying it quite significantly in the process. He also modified his view of its usefulness, finally directing that, whenever the Symphonie is played alone, without its stage sequel Lélio, the program was not to be distributed. However, as in Harold in Italy, the titles of the movements must be retained. The composer sensed rightly that the music was comprehensible in its own terms, and did not need any added literary explanation.

The true originality of the Symphonie fantastique lies in the music itself. The many novelties of its melody, harmony and orchestration strike our ears even today. Most significantly, however, the work embodies an entirely new conception of dramatic instrumental music. In realising the new dramatic ideal in his music, Berlioz significantly modified classical symphonic practices in several respects: the number and grouping of the movements, the character of the individual movements and the treatment of the main theme.

The ‘hero’ of Berlioz’s symphonic drama is not the musician of the program, but the first theme of the Allegro (Passions) section of the first movement. This theme, which reappears in each of the subsequent scenes of the drama, is the subject and source of action in the whole work and its development is projected into five specific ‘situations’.

Laurence JacksonConcertmaster

When did you realize that you wanted to become a professional musician? I have always wanted to be a violinist and since my very earliest memory, I have been playing, listening or dreaming about it. I grew up in the country between Liverpool and Manchester and not having many friends nearby meant that I could play all day and listen to LPs of the great violinists. I was always encouraged to play, although my parents were not musicians, and I also composed and played the viola (although I like to keep that quiet these days!). I went to Chetham’s School of Music when I was 10 years old and later I gained a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music in London to study with Emanuel Hurwitz and later, the French virtuoso Maurice Hasson.

What piece of music would you play to convince someone of the power of music? That’s such a difficult question, but I would probably play whatever I happened to be playing that week, as we invariably play such great music in WASO. Just this morning I was listening to Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique and thinking how incredible that is - but any Beethoven slow movement from either his symphonies or quartets would surely sell classical music to a sceptic?

You have worked with some of the world’s greatest conductors. Do you have a most cherished conductor’s comment?Well, not necessarily cherished, but certainly memorable ones come to mind. A lovely comment was from the Geordie-born conductor and arranger John Wilson, who has made a real name for himself worldwide with the John Wilson Orchestra, performing many of his arrangements of the classic Hollywood movie scores and songs of that era. He has a refreshingly dry sense of humour, and introduced the solo vocalist at the first morning rehearsal, saying “and I would like to welcome

G*** W*******, probably one of the finest light music singers on the circuit in the world today… in his particular price bracket”.

We are delighted that you made the move from England to Perth. What has been the biggest adjustment? The cold! Seriously, we thought that just because we were from Europe, we would be immune to the cold of a Perth winter and given that our house is not well insulated, it’s been a major shock! Also, the internet speeds are equivalent to the UK some twenty years ago, so that has been an issue for us. Besides those minor irritations, there have been so many positive adjustments to be made here. The environment is far more pleasant, with fewer people and less pollution, and people tend to have more time for you and for themselves also. WASO is also such a friendly welcoming orchestra, that the transition has been relatively smooth given the upheaval involved in moving to the other side of the world.

Musicians are always busy people. What do you do when you have time to relax? I particularly enjoy nature photography, particularly the wonderful and colourful birdlife in WA and cooking also, especially when I have the time and no pressure to enjoy the results of my labour!

We invite you to make a gold coin donation to help purchase Christmas gifts for our Crescendo students in Kwinana.WASO’s El Sistema-inspired Music Education Program, Crescendo, lies at the heart of our Community Engagement portfolio, and offers free weekly music lessons to students at North Parmelia and Medina Primary Schools in Kwinana.

We are very proud of our Crescendo students who have worked hard and achieved so much in music lessons throughout the year. We would love you to join us in celebrating their musicianship, confidence and respectfulness through music classes and performances in 2016.

As we celebrate the end of the third year of Crescendo, we invite you to make a small donation towards end of year gifts for each student who has participated in the program in 2016. The gifts will be related to our lessons, and encourage students to keep playing music during the school holidays.

The gifts will be presented along with Certificates of Participation at our end of year Christmas Concert at both schools.

Volunteers will be accepting gold coin donations before the concerts and during interval of evening concerts.

Want to learn more about our Crescendo music program in Kwinana or join our Crescendo Giving Circle? Please go to waso.com.au/supportus/philanthropy/crescendo_giving_circle or contact Sarah Tompkin on 9326 0017.
