Technical Tours

Wednesday morning, April 16, is dedicated entirely to the technical tour program. Tours are available to full registrants only and included at no additional cost as a part of the Snow Conference program. Space is limited so be sure to register early and check the appropriate box on your registration form if you plan to participate.

Tour 1Airport Snow Removal Equipment

Held at the Louisville Regional Airport Authority’s maintenance facility, this tour will highlight a variety of snow removal equipmentutilized to remove snow from the runways and taxiways at Louisville International Airport. Louisville International Airport is home to theall-points hub for United Parcel Service (UPS), requiring staff at the airport authority to keep the airfield open 24/7 for use by UPS. Duringthis tour you will see deicing equipment with 75-foot booms used to deice the 150-foot wide runways and 75-foot taxiways. Additionally, you will come face to face with 22-foot-wide high-speed snow brooms andplows. The plows are used for moving large loads of snow from the airfield, while the brooms remove finer snow particles. Staff will be on hand to describe how they keep the airport operational despite the mostsevere snow and ice events that Mother Nature can dish out.

Tour 2Louisville Underground

Converted from an active limestone mine in the early 1970s, the Louisville Underground has developed into a multifaceted facility that not only holds reserve salt storage for Louisville Metro Government and the State Highway Department, but also stores original films from major motion pictures and much more. This facility uses innovative structural fill made of recycled materials to serve as foundations for the four million square feet of underground storage. Learn about the interesting history of the cavern system, including details of a huge civil defense shelter used during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962, as well as the innovative thinking behind some upcoming enhancements. Join this tour and see what can come from two creative thinkers and an old rock mine.

Looavul. Luhvul. Loueville. Looaville. Looeyville… No matter how you say it, Louisville is the place to be for this year’s North American Snow Conference! Situated on the banks of the Ohio River, downtown Louisville has undergone an amazing transformation in the past few years, including an enhanced Waterfront Park and 4th Street Live!, a thriving restaurant, entertainment and retail district just blocks from the official Snow Conference hotels. Just a short taxi ride away is the East End’s Bardstown Road district with more great restaurants and night life. Also within walking distance of the downtown hotels are several unique and fun museums – the Louisville Slugger Museum and Factory, the Muhammad Ali Center, and the Frazier International History Museum (previously known as the Frazier Arms Museum), just to name a few. And of course, Louisville is the home of legendary and historic Churchill Downs and the Kentucky Derby.

Thunder Over LouisvilleSaturday, April 12

Thunder Over Louisville is an annual event, marking the beginning of The Kentucky Derby Festival and drawing an estimated 800,000 people. It’s a full afternoon and evening of fun in downtown Louisville. Starting at 3:00 p.m., there will be continual air show per-formances until 9:30 p.m. when the real Thunder begins! Thunder is the largest annual fireworks and pyrotechnics display in North America – a full half hour of continuous fire-works lighting up the sky and set to music. It takes four barges, a bridge and a big sky to perform the entire fireworks show. There will be food booths, beer gardens, souvenirs, and viewing space in Waterfront Park along the banks of the Ohio River. There is no cost to attend. For more information, go to www.thunderoverlouisville.org.

PLEASE NOTE: If you will be arriving in Louisville on Saturday, plan to arrive in the morning or as early in the afternoon as possible. Traffic will be heavy all day, with street closings near the riverfront beginning early afternoon and highway closings before the fireworks begin.

Kentucky Derby NightTuesday, April 15

Ok… so we’ll be in Louisville a few weeks too early for the actual Kentucky Derby, but that’s no reason we can’t start getting into the spirit! The Run for the Roses – the most exciting two minutes in sports – will be coming to Louisville on May 3, 2008. We’ll have a preview look at the track and preparations from our Millionaire’s Row perch at Churchill Downs. No, there won’t be any horses racing on the track below, but we will have some fun with mock video racing. You could win a great prize if your horse finishes first!

John Asher, Vice-President of Communications at Churchill Downs, will join us to share some of his favorite Derby stories. John has worked in the Thoroughbred racing industry as a journalist and publicist for more than 20 years. His expertise and passion for racing combined with his journalistic talents have earned him celebrity status on the Kentucky racing circuit.

Cost is included in full attendee and guest/spouse registrations. Additional tickets are $50 each and can be purchased with your Snow Conference registration. Casual attire is fine.
