NOVENA PRAYER TO ST. ANTHONY

St. Anthony, gentlest of Saints, your love for God

and charity for his creatures, made you worthy, when on earth, to possess miraculous powers. Miracles waited on your word, which you were ready to speak for those in trouble or anxiety. Encouraged by this thought,

I ask you to obtain for me the favors that I seek (pause 10 seconds).

The answer to my prayer may require a miracle; even so, you are the Saint of Miracles.

O gentle and loving St. Anthony, whose heart was full of sympathy, whisper my petition into the ears

of the Infant Jesus, who loved to be held in your arms;

and the gratitude of my heart will ever be yours.

Amen

A BRIEF HISTORY

The parish of St. Anthony of Padua was canonically erected on May 1, 1953 by Bishop F.J.

Caroll as part of the Diocese of Calgary serving residents south of 34th Avenue. The first Mass

was celebrated July 1, 1953 in the former St. Anthony School. The first church and hall were

completed on November 1, 1953 on the current location. The current St. Anthony’s Church

received the solemn blessings on December 31, 1960 with the laying of the cornerstone.

The first Mass at St. Anthony’s Church was celebrated on June 25, 1961.

OUR MISSION

We, the parishioners of Saint Anthony's Church, exist to continue the mission of Jesus Christ.

We gather to publicly express our faith, our communion with God and with one another.

Together, we will work:

+ to proclaim the Gospel effectively,

+ to recognize the signs of holiness all across the parish,

+ to deepen that holiness throughout the parish by prayer, sacrament & personal

example,

+ and to help people worship God in the best way possible.

In this task, with God's help, we hope that every member of the parish will have the

opportunity to grow to the fullness of his or her Christian vocation.

SACRAMENTS OF INITIATION

BAPTISM

If you are interested in having your child or children baptized, complete the baptism request

form (www.stanthonyscalgary.com/baptism) and submit to the parish office along with a

copy of your child’s birth certificate.

The candidate may have one or two godparents (also called sponsors) who are to be chosen

by the parents, One of the sponsors must be a Roman Catholic who has already received the

Sacraments of Eucharist and Confirmation, and is leading a life in harmony with the Catholic

Faith. Neither the father nor mother of the child may be a sponsor.

Baptism dates are scheduled by Fr. Edmund Vargas. Attendance at a Baptism Preparation

Class prior to the baptism is required if you have not attended one previously.

The Baptism Preparation Program ensures that parents have a clear understanding of their

role and responsibilities as Christian parents and deepens their understanding of the

Sacraments, particularly baptism. Preparation classes are scheduled on the fourth Saturday of

the month, 2:30 pm – 4:30 pm, the office boardroom.

FIRST RECONCILIATION AND FIRST EUCHARIST

Children in grade 2 and up will be prepared for and celebrate First Reconciliation before

being prepared for and celebrating First Eucharist. There are four (4) monthly sessions and a

retreat to prepare for First Reconciliation, as well as four (4) monthly sessions and a retreat

to prepare for First Communion. Parents attend concurrent 90-minute sessions.

Children who have received First Communion and wish to receive the Sacrament of First

Reconciliation only will join the First Reconciliation sessions in the First Reconciliation and

First Communion program.

CONFIRMATION

The Sacrament of Confirmation will be celebrated on Wednesday, June 10 at 7:00 pm by

Bishop Frederick Henry.

Confirmation is the sacrament that completes our full initiation into the church. It is

sometimes called the sacrament of the Holy Spirit. In receiving the sacrament, we are

reminded of our baptism call to carry on the mission of the church to do Jesus's work.

Children must be in grade six and up to register. Preparation will consist of a parent and

student session, three student sessions and a retreat, all of which require mandatory

attendance. Children will be involved in a social justice project, research their Saint name and

write a letter to Bishop Henry.

The Parish Commitment Mass allows the candidate to promise to do their best to prepare for

the Sacrament of Confirmation as well as to ask the parish family to support and pray for

them. Our first session will discuss what is Confirmation and what it is not and will touch on

the gifts of the Holy Spirit as well as a review of what is expected of the Confirmandi.

The other sessions will cover the sacraments of initiation, what we believe as a Catholic

Community, the Gifts of the Holy Spirit, the signs and symbols of the sacrament of

Confirmation, being a Christian witness and the rite of Confirmation.

The confirmation Team, Father Edmund Vargas our parish priest, Deacon Ron, Ashley, Jeffrell,

Julienne, Martina and Dorothy look forward to being part of your child’s faith journey.

OUTREACH

TOGETHER IN ACTION

Together in Action (TIA) is the Diocese of Calgary’s annual social justice fundraising campaign.

Established in 1992, to date it has raised over $43,000,000 to assist our vulnerable

population. It was created to live out Christ’s teaching to share our gifts and care for our

vulnerable population by:

• allowing parishioners to collectively support TIA recipients,

• educating parishioners about the plight of others,

• streamlining the funding requests by organizations in the parishes, and

• to be of service to the Catholic and community at large.

Further, it is the primary source of funding for many of our diocesan programs and services

in southern Alberta. Funds from this campaign go toward counselling, food, families, youth,

and our retired priests, deacons, and seminarians. These are all areas that impact the lives of

thousands of people locally, nationally, and internationally and help each of us live a better

life.

No matter how much we may want someone else to take care of all of the world’s challenges,

it is ultimately up to each of us to stand up and say, “I know I can be the difference – no

matter how small!” The work of the church moves forward when individuals like us are

committed to the key principles of Catholic Social Teaching and stewardship.

The campaign begins again for 2020 on March 1, The First Sunday of Lent and continues until

mid-January 2021. In 2019, our parish met our goal and contributed $44,487 to TIA.

Our goal will be established as the ratio of our previous three-year-average income to that of

the Diocese’s three-year-average income. Our 2019 goal represented 2.2% of the $2 million

campaign.

There are many ways in which you can give. You can use our parish envelopes (cash and

cheques), Pre-Authorized monthly withdrawal (debit), or credit card donation on our website

(one time or monthly) (http://www.stanthonyscalgary.com/donation). Credit and debit

payments are also accepted at the parish office.

WORLD MISSION SUNDAY

At the initiative of Pope Pius XI in 1926, the second last Sunday during October became

known as World Mission Sunday. In 2020, we will celebrate World Mission Sunday on

Sunday, October 18. Catholics throughout the world are invited to pray for and give to the

missions through the Pontifical Missions Society. The funds collected assist some 1,250 mission

dioceses including 6 dioceses in Northern Canada. For cash and cheque contributions use the

envelopes provided. Designate cheques and online donations to World Mission Sunday.

FEED THE HUNGRY - SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 20

For the impoverished, Sunday can seem to be just another day of trying to find food, shelter

and a sense of belonging. Thanks to gifts of time, talent and treasure from our sponsors we

can ensure approximately 500 people experience a different Sunday — food, family and

respect at

St. Mary’s Hall in the heart of Calgary.

Feed the Hungry has been providing a sit-down meal, served to our guests by volunteers, on

Sunday nights at St. Mary’s Hall since 1993. This traditional “Sunday Night” dinner includes

salad, a hot entrée, bread, dessert and an assortment of beverages.

Volunteers are an integral part of the evening’s success. Approximately 100 volunteers cook,

greet, serve and clean up to ensure our guests have a warm and welcoming experience each

and every week. Part of your commitment will be the recruitment of these volunteers.

MISSION MEXICO DAY

Bishop McGrattan declared December 12, the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Mission

Mexico Day in the diocese of Calgary. “You are God’s hands and feet to bring life and hope

to communities in Southern Mexico that are widely regarded as the poorest of the poor.”

We have a special Children’s Loonie and Toonie collection at the Sunday Masses, December

12 and 13. All children are encouraged to bring their loonies and toonies and put them in the

Mission Mexico basket in front of the altar after the communion prayer.

ST. ANTHONY’S FOODBANK

Our mandate is to assist the needy in our community by delivering food hampers and offering

friendship and hope. New members are always welcome! Meetings are held the 1st Monday

of September to November and March to June, in the Parish Hall,

ST. ANTHONY’S CHRISTMAS HAMPER PROGRAM

St. Anthony’s Christmas Hamper Program provides Christmas food hampers to needy families

in our community prior to Christmas. An average hamper is valued at $200 and consists of

one weeks’ worth of non-perishable food, paper and soap products, toiletries, bread, milk

and margarine, potatoes, and carrots, onions, chicken or ham, apples and oranges, for a

Christmas meal, and presents for the children. The program is a collaboration between St.

Anthony’s volunteers and donors, St. Augustine School, and local businesses including Country

Our Parish Stewardship Prayer

Gracious and loving God, we have gathered as a community

to listen to your Word, and to share in the Eucharist.

May your eternal Word and the living Eucharist transform us into good stewards of your abundant blessings, and teach us to open

our hearts to the needs of the Church and to the voices of the poor.

Watch over us with loving care, and help our parish to grow

in faith, hope and love.

Fill your Church with generous hearts that also respond to your

call to the priesthood and religious life.

We ask this through Christ Our Lord.

Amen
