PROGRAM GUIDE | OCTOBER 2020 | VOL. 39 NO. 10
Despite the worries and strains in public education during the ongoing pandemic, teachers’ attendance and engagement were strong at last month’s statewide HIKI NŌ conference.
It was the 11th such event for HIKI NŌ teachers – and the very first virtual one.
HIKI NŌ teachers, who have experience with in-person digital instruction, honed their skills over the summer to manage online classes. They face rows of children in boxes, as students look into screens from home. Inevitably there is audio competition – from weed wackers, crying babies, bouncing balls, barking dogs.
Under the leadership of PBS Hawai‘i Vice President Robert Pennybacker, our normally school-based program has continued uninterrupted during the pandemic, with HIKI NŌ students using smartphones to report responsibly and creatively from home.
At this teachers virtual workshop, participants broke into online groups to glean more video storytelling skills to share with their students.
HIKI NŌ professional mentor David Rosen chose the familiar story of Bambi to illustrate story structure.
He showed a movie clip in which young Bambi’s mother, sensing danger as the two are grazing, urges her son to run and to keep running. Gunshots are heard. Bambi’s father finds Bambi, and the two walk into an uncertain future.
This fits the classic three-act story structure: Act One – set-up; Act Two – complications or confrontation; Act Three – increasing complications or resolution.
Another HIKI NŌ professional mentor, Christi Young, drew on the fable of Humpty Dumpty to offer guidance in framing a story. Is the reporter’s approach going to be “Giant egg falls, cracks and is rescued by soldiers”? Or perhaps it’s “Wall owner says almost-fatal fall is not his fault.”
These motivated teachers from 53 schools showed remarkable staying power during the seven-and-a-half-hour onscreen Saturday workshop.
We honor and thank all dedicated teachers in the state as they endeavor to keep safe during the pandemic and as they work to educate students in trying conditions.
Aloha nui,

TAIMANE GARDNERTuesday, October 27 at 7:30 pm
After being discovered as a child performer on the sidewalks of Waikīkī, Taimane Gardner has established herself as one of the fiercest ‘ukulele players in the world.
Born and raised in ‘Āina Haina in East Honolulu, she was given the small four-stringed instrument at the age of five. She says even as a child, she loved performing in front of an audience. “I was doing shows for my dog and my parents at the time, and so my dad decided, you know, maybe take me out,” says Gardner.
“Out” was to Waikīkī, where she honed her skills playing cover songs with other street performers. It was one of those jam sessions that led to an introduction to legendary Hawai‘i musician Don Ho. When Gardner was just 13 years old, Ho invited her to perform in his live show, where she learned valuable lessons about the local music industry and performing in front of live audiences.
From there her trajectory to stardom was on the rise. She captivates audiences with her stunning strumming and fingerpicking skills, playing everything from classical to classic rock and original compositions. According to Gardner, she feels more comfortable on stage than off stage. She says, “I just need to express whatever is in me, and it just comes out in this very ferocious energy and people seem to be drawn to it.”
That face-to-face, in-person connection with her fans is on hold during the COVID-19 pandemic. Her appearances at several high-profile concerts were cancelled, including ones at South by Southwest (SXSW) in Austin, Texas and the 50th Anniversary Glastonbury Festival in the United Kingdom. Gardner was also forced to cancel her fall tour in Europe.
Instead, she’s using this time to write new music and record a new album. She’s also doing
some cooking, yoga and unwinding. Hear more from this ‘ukulele virtuoso this month on Long Story Short with Leslie Wilcox.
