I and the rest of the PBS Hawai‘i Board of Directors happily welcome our new PBS Hawai‘i President and Chief Executive Officer, Ron Mizutani. Our national search for a strategic thinker with both Hawai‘i sensibilities and a global perspective ended with Ron coming home in a sense, as he has reconnected with many of his former colleagues who work right here at the station. Ron is a longtime television journalist with demonstrated experience in the business and nonprofit sectors. As you read this program guide, Ron will have been here for a little over a week, in time to participate in the national 2021 Public Media Summit.
During our search for a new President and CEO, the Board looked for more than just leadership experience and strategic thinking – and we were lucky to find a mission-driven
leader with deep community connections, who could drive the station’s strategic plan alongside the existing executive team, navigate the ever-changing funding landscape, and think outside-of-the-box when it comes to seeking financial opportunities and partnerships.
We are confident in Ron’s talent for convening Island voices and to be the community connector who will lead PBS Hawai‘i through these uncertain times. His passion for PBS Hawai‘i and our programs, and his ability to bring people together to uplift others is something we all look forward to, and know that you will as well.
Stay tuned!
Welcome, Ron!Joanne Lo Grimes

CLASSICSNā Mele ‘OhanaThursday, March 4 at 9:00 pmFrom 1992, the Nā Mele ‘Ohana concert features timeless songs from some of Hawai‘i’s most beloved musical families. Performers include Barney Isaacs (pictured), Benny Kalama, Mahi Beamer, Robbie and Jimmy Kaholokula, and Irmgard Farden Aluli with Puamana. All were accompanied by the Honolulu Symphony for this once-in-a-lifetime performance.
No Nā Mamo: For the DescendantsThursday, March 25 at 9:00 pm
From 1990, this tribute to the late hula master Kau‘i Zuttermeister (pictured) documents how four generations of her family were invited to open the famed Merrie Monarch Festival in Hilo. Crews filmed the year-long preparation ahead of their trip to Hilo, where they performed the mele, chants and hula of the Zuttermeister tradition.
On the RadioThursday, March 18 at 9:00 pmBefore there was televison, radio was king of the airwaves. We’re turning up the volume with the history of vintage Hawaiian music from when the Islands were still a territory. The program also includes tales from some of Hawai‘i’s famous radio personalities including Honolulu Skylark (pictured), James Grant Benton and Perry & Price.
Nona Beamer and Her Family: A Century of Songs Celebrating Hawaiian CultureThursday, March 11 at 9:00 pmEducator, composer and hula dancer Nona Beamer (pictured), or Aunty Nona, was a champion of Hawaiian culture. This special features songs from her musically talented family as well as one-on-one interviews. They share personal stories, including the time Aunty Nona fired her sons Kapono and Keola on stage, during a live concert.
It’s time to take a trip down memory lane. This month, PBS Hawai‘i is digging into its archives to rebroadcast classic episodes of Spectrum Hawaii. The magazine-style show aired on our station for fifteen seasons (1983 – 1998), highlighting much
that is unique to Hawai‘i, including our neighborhoods, cultures, arts and history. While some may remember the shows, they will be an opportunity for a new generation to get a glimpse of our past.

ROY YAMAMOTO JR.Tuesday, March 23 at 7:30 pm
Pastor Roy Yamamoto Jr. found salvation in prison. Growing up in Pearl City, he had a troubled childhood. There was abuse at home and embarrassment at school because he never learned how to read. Although he excelled at sports, it was during his first year of playing college football that he was introduced to cocaine. “All of a sudden my career in drugs was more important,” said Yamamoto.
His drug use skyrocketed to a $1,000-a-day habit. He didn’t have that kind of money, so he resorted to crime to get his fix and was a repeat offender – convicted of extortion, kidnapping, robbery, assault and attempted murder.
Realizing the dead-end path he was on, Yamamoto decided to attend a bible study while he was behind bars. That would change his life. “From that point I knew I was a new person,” he said.
Facing 80 years in prison, rulings by two judges granted Yamamoto freedom. He’s used his time to mend scarred relationships and become a pastor in his own church. He also created a camp for children of the incarcerated because, according to Yamamoto, “They’re at the highest risk to become criminals as adults, and get into addiction and go into the youth facility.”
Hear Roy Yamamoto Jr.’s story of recovery, atonement and forgiveness, this month on Long Story Short with Leslie Wilcox.

PBS HAWAI‘I PRESENTSShinmachi: Stronger than a TsunamiThursday, April 1 at 9:00 pm
This documentary tells the story of the Japanese business district in Hilo, Hawai‘i Island that was destroyed by a deadly tsunami on April 1, 1946. Families salvaged what they could to rebuild only to have the district wiped out again by another tsunami in 1960. Surviving residents recall the community’s resilience to keep the spirit of Shinmachi alive today. Pictured: Daijingu procession in Shinmachi, ca. 1918.
