Maps of Program Locations

For programs that require registration, space may be reserved online at www.dawesarb.org/learn/calendar, by making selection(s) and paying fees with a credit card. Reservations also may be made in person or by calling 800.44.DAWES. For many programs, walk-in registrations are accepted on the day of a program, unless the program is full. Space is often limited, so we encourage early reservations to guarantee a spot. To view upcoming programs on a monthly calendar, visit us online at www.dawesarb.org.

Sugar Maple (Individual Membership) Level Member’s price may be only used by the named member.Hickory (Household Membership) Level & Above Member’s price may be used by all individuals residing in the member household.

Most programs are held rain or shine; please dress appropriately. In the event of a cancellation, The Arboretum will attempt to contact you. Please be sure to include current contact information when submitting your registration.

Volunteers are some of The Arboretum’s biggest supporters, contributing nearly 5,000 hours per year. Opportunities to volunteer your expertise and enthusiasm range from one-time projects to ongoing grounds work and education programs. For details on becoming a volunteer, please contact The Arboretum at 740.323.2355 or [email protected].

Cancellations made at least 48 hours (two weeks for summer camps) prior to the first day of the program will receive a full refund, minus a $5 processing fee. Cancellations received with less than 48 hours notice are generally not eligible for a refund or transfer. Substitutions for the participant are allowed. The Arboretum reserves the right to cancel a program; if a cancellation must occur, participants are notified and receive a full refund.

The Dawes Arboretum, in collaboration with the Licking County Local Foods Council and Local Food Week 2015, invites you to an event that is all about local food and flavor, in support of the local foods community.

In its second year, this event boasts a variety of cuisine for purchase from local food trucks and a selection of beverages from Ohio breweries and wineries, all in a beautiful setting that only The Arboretum can provide. Musical entertainment, a special children's area and a peek at how Arboretum staff and program participants are utilizing their green thumbs to grow produce for a local food bank, add to the atmosphere.

Admission to the event is free. There is a $5 per car parking fee taken at the gate (Arboretum supporters—show your membership card, for free entry). Or, if your feeling ambitious, roll out your bicycle and join Cyclicking for an evening ride to and from the event!

Learn about the care and treatment of fresh flowers as you work with them. Experience with flower arranging helpful, but not necessary. If available, bring floral snips and wire cutters.

Dogs must have a good temperament and be on a 6’ leash or shorter; no flex-leashes. Maximum two dogs per person.

Lunar Eclipse ViewingSunday, September 27, 2015 | 9 – 11:30pm Red Barn | $20/$15 membersStay up late for a rare opportunity to view a total eclipse of the harvest moon, which is also the closest supermoon of 2015. The moon passes through Earth’s shadow beginning approximately one hour after sunset, with a total eclipse occurring at approximately 10:45pm. Tastings of Ohio wines from local Sand Hollow Winery served with cheese and crackers are offered. Socialize in the beautiful setting of our rustic Red Barn as you wait for the eclipse to appear or listen for the sounds of wildlife on a guided night hike. Register by Thursday, September 24. Early registration is recommended, as space is limited.

Ohio Sustainable Landscapes SymposiumSaturday, September 12, 2015 | Time TBA Visitors Center | $65/$55 members, registration opens August 1, 2015Do you want to be a part of restoring Ohio’s native landscapes? Looking for locally available native plants and trees for your garden? Find opportunities

for both at the Ohio Sustainable Landscape Symposium! This event offers nurseries specializing in native plants, experts in eco-landscaping, practical techniques for creating sustainable landscapes, and several hands-on workshops to choose from. During the event, Arboretum staff led tours through natural habitats and our exquisite gardens. At each destination, participants learn about plant identification and restoration highlights. Also included is the Fall Plant Sale, showcasing some of the best trees, shrubs and flowering plants for restoring Ohio’s unique biodiversity.

Lunch includes a delicious variety of locally-sourced food. Registration ends September 7, 2015. All registrants receive a FREE native plant grown by The Dawes Arboretum to take home!

On the third Friday of each month, join our team of educators and volunteers for a guided hike on our main grounds, after hours. Search for night-time critters and look for stars, as daylight fades and your senses change. Each season brings something new to see and hear.

HistoryDaweswood House Museum ToursFridays, Saturdays & Sundays | noon & 2pm$2 adults/$1 children/members freeTake a guided tour of the Daweswood House Museum, once the country home of Arboretum co-founders, the late Beman and Bertie Dawes. See and hear the history behind antiques and memorabilia from the Dawes family. A house highlight is the “Rathskeller,” a basement area that displays shovels used by 100 notable men and women who dedicated trees at The Arboretum and features their initials and signatures on the ceiling.

Building Doctor ClinicThursday, July 23, 2015 | 7 – 10pmVisitors Center | freeOhio’s building doctor makes house calls!The Dawes Arboretum and The Historic Hudson Community Association have collaborated to sponsor a Building Doctor Clinic presented by the Ohio Historic Preservation Office.

The clinic begins with a seminar Thursday about how to recognize and solve some of the most common sources of problems in maintaining older buildings, and how to make informed decisions about repairs and improvements.

On Friday, July 24, from 9am – 3pm, the Building Doctors will schedule ten private visits to pre-1955 buildings within five miles of downtown Newark, advising owners on specific technical or design problems. Common problems include peeling paint, flaking plaster, wet basements, deteriorating masonry and plans for remodeling, additions or demolitions. This part of the session is by appointment only.

Book Repair WorkshopSunday, August 9, 2015 | 2 – 3pmHistory Archives Building | $30/$25 membersThis lecture and workshop introduces participants to basic book repair, including: book nomenclature; examples of common types of damage and appropriate repairs, such as hinge repair, mending torn pages and how to dry wet books; and hands-on practice of learned methods. All participants receive a set of tools necessary to complete the treatments covered in the workshop.

Coloring Historic PhotographsThursday, September 24, 2015 | 6:30 – 8pmVisitors Center | $20/$15 membersDeb Bennett of Licking County Arts and The Dawes Arboretum Historian Leslie Wagner teach participants to hand-color historic photographs, a technique used by Bertie Dawes. Touring the Tombstones: Beard-Green Cemetary TourSaturday, October 31, 2015 | 6:30 – 8pmVisitors Center Deck | $6/$3 membersProfessional archaeologist Krista Horrocks shares the history of the cemetery and showcases its unique headstones. Learn how gravestone symbology reflected the ideals of the time and how the meaning and interpretation still holds true today.

Second Saturday Speaker SeriesJoin us on the second Saturday of each month for engaging presentations related to science, nature, local history and horticulture topics. There is no fee and pre-registration is not required; however, support is greatly appreciated—recommended donation is $2 per guest. *Pease note, due to the Ohio Landscape Symposium on September 12, there is no Speaker Series.

Tallgrass Prairies of Ohio and a Recipe for Making Prairie GrassSaturday, July 11, 2015The Tallgrass Prairie Biome is unique to North America. Our prairies are a product of what scientists call the rain shadow of the Rocky Mountains. In this presentation, Guy Denny, current President and a founding member of the Ohio Natural Areas & Preserves Association, examines the origin and ecology of the prairies of North America and, more specifically, the tallgrass prairie biome.

Participants get a close look at the different types of native tallgrass prairie remnants found in Ohio with particular attention to the flora and fauna of Ohio’s tallgrass prairie ecosystems. The second part of this presentation covers, in detail, how to go about establishing and maintaining your own tallgrass prairie garden, large or small.

An Introduction to Tree DedicatorsSaturday, August 8, 2015If you’ve toured our grounds or Daweswood House Museum, you may be familiar with our legacy of dedicated trees by 106 individuals including Senator John Glenn, Orville Wright and Buckminster Fuller. This lecture, followed

by a wagon or walking tour, highlights some of the most notable tree dedicators throughout Arboretum history. Register early as space on the wagon is limited.

The Great Hopewell Road—Ohio’s Ancient SuperhighwaySaturday, October 10, 2015Celebrate Ohio Archaeology Month with Brad Lepper, Curator of Archaeology at the Ohio History Connection.

Those who are familiar with the Newark Earthworks or are simply curious to learn about Ohio’s ancient cultures will enjoy this presentation that highlights The Great Hopewell Road, a set of parallel earthen walls built around A.D. 100. The ultimate destination of this road, which began at the monumental Newark Earthworks, is still a mystery, but it may have been a route of pilgrimage connecting two of the grandest centers of the Hopewell world.

Walk to Be Well Wednesdays | Visitors Center Deck | Free, donations welcomeEnjoy a morning or evening stroll as staff and volunteers lead a group through The Arboretum grounds during these weekly walks (30 – 45 minutes).
