A Missive from the District Chair

Dear Esteemed Sponsors, Thespians, Parents, and Guests,What a whirlwind this fall has been! I love a good challenge, and stepping into the role ofDistrict Chair has proven to be one of the greatest professional challenges of my career. Ihave been to Thespian District and State Festivals countless times over the years first as astudent, and later as a co-sponsor. However, I have never attended as a District Chair, untilnow. !This job is HUGE! There are many people that I must thank. First and foremost, Imust thank my work partner, my right hand, and our wonderful District V Secretary, Ms.Laura Copenhaver! This festival simply would not have happened without her. A tremendousthank you goes to Mr. Jeff Williams for not only hosting, but for being a fabulous co-conspirator in this wonderful journey. Thank you to Mrs. Melaney Douglass for coordinatingall of our judges, to Ms. Karen Rugerio for all of the expertise, and to Mr. James Brendlinger, the District III Chair, for being my mentor throughout this process. Thank you to all of thesponsors, parents, and businesses who have contributed to this beautiful festival. I must thankmy beautiful family for loving the arts and forgiving the long hours I spent away from themin preparation for this. I hope you will all help me in sharing much gratitude to the studentsof troupe 5115 for their countless hours of preparation and their dedication to making thisthe best festival yet! And finally, my unwavering love and admiration goes out to the studentsin my troupe 7434, many of whom helped me charter this troupe five years ago. Specialthanks go out to the students in my Comp. Theatre class, led by our Senior Rep. KiraAlqueza and our Junior Rep. Daniela Martinez. No one will truly ever know all thesestudents did to make this weekend happen, but it is because of them that this all couldhappen. I am the luckiest woman in the world to go to work each day to be with youngpeople as passionate, talented, loving, and hard working as them!

In closing, I leave you with this. Earlier this fall, our State Chair, Daron Hawkins passedaway at age 38. He was too young to die and he has left a huge hole in many hearts. Thelesson to be learned here is this live each day as if it is your last, and always tell your lovedones how you feel about them. Mr. Hawkins believed very passionately in BroadwayCares/Equity Fights AIDS. I hope you will join us in our commitment to this fabulousorganization!

It has truly been an honor serving as your District Chair and I look forward to continuingin my duties on behalf of all Thespians in District V. Remember our motto, Act well yourpart; there all the honor lies.

    Humbly Yours,

    Mrs. Gail Chase

    12:55- 1:35 | Troupe 5115 | As Is * V, R, P, SA, D, S, L

Winner of the 1985 Drama Desk Award for outstanding new play. Rich, a young writer who isbeginning to find success, is breaking up with his longtime lover, Saul, a professionalphotographer. The split is particularly difficult for Saul, who still loves Rich deeply. Rich learnsthat he has AIDS and returns to the goodhearted Saul for sanctuary as he awaits its slow andawful progress. As the story unfolds we are presented with a mosaic of short scenes, someprofoundly moving, some brightly humorous, which capture the pathos of Rich's relationshipwith friends and family; the cold impersonality of the doctors and nurses who care for him; andthe widely diverse aspects of New York's gay communityfor which Rich's plight is a chilling

reminder of their own peril. In the end the effect of the play is emotionally overwhelminganhonest and unsparing examination of a deeply felt human relationship shattered by a mindless, destructive force which cannot be tempered or turned aside.
