INTRODUCTION The multiple-award winning and fresh directors with colourful events

This year, the 2nd edition of the Korean Film Spotlight at Fantasia will present delightful films. We will discover the acclaimed directors and a number of the talented fresh directors’ first feature films.The invited multiple-award winning directors from South Korea will present their most recent films at Fantasia: Ryoo Seung-wan, director of THE UNJUST, a gritty story of cops and crime starring Ryoo Seung-beom and Hwang Jung-min. The creator of THE KING AND THE CLOWN, Lee Joon-ik, arrives with another variation on the historical epic, BATTLEFIELD HEROES, and has been invited onto the jury for the main competition section at Fantasia. Lastly, Lee Hae-young, responsible for the witty film, LIKE A VIRGIN, presents FOXY FESTIVAL, a smart comedy about sexual secrets and desires.

Welcoming five feature films by the talented first-time directors are: BLEAK NIGHT (FIPRESCI Prize) by Yoon Sung-hyun, HAUNTERS by Kim Min-suk, a paranormal thriller with star Kang Dong-won. HELLO GHOST by Kim Young-tak is an ir-reverent yet big-hearted comedy starring Cha Tae-Hyun from MY SASSY GIRL.INVASION OF ALIEN BIKINI(Grand Prix winner at Yubari Fantastic Film Festival) by Oh Young-doo, which is a contemporary Korean genre hybrid blending science fiction, comedy and action, and a triumph of filmmaking on a shoestring. And, PETTY ROMANCE by Kim Jeong-hoon offers a quirky and enjoyable spin on the romantic comedy genre. Finally, this year includes a pair of impressive two short films. NIGHT FISHING by Park Chan-wook (OLDBOY) and Park Chan-kyong was a Jury Prize and Golden Bear Award-winner at Berlin Film Festival 2011, shot entirely with iPhones 4. Dahci Ma’s GHOST, straight from competition at Cannes 2011, is about a starving man’s imagination getting bigger in an empty house.

Ciné-Asie will organize colourful events that are culturally diverse and cinematic inspiring during Fantasia: Master Class on Action cinema, East-Asian Calligraphy workshop, Korean Five Drums performance, Storytelling concert and Industry Lun-cheon. Cette année, la deuxième édition de Korean Film Spotlight, à Fantasia, présentera de merveilleux films. On découvrira des réalisateurs acclamés ainsi que plusieurs premiers films de jeunes réalisateurs. Merci à Fantasia et à leurs généreuses invitations à trois réalisateurs de la Corée du Sud, récipiendaires de nombreux prix, qui seront présents à Fantasia. Ryoo Seung-wan, réalisateur de THE UNJUST, une histoire de policiers et de crimes. Ce film met en vedette Ryoo Seung-beom et Hwang Jung-min. Le créateur de THE KING AND THE CLOWN, Lee Joon-ik, arrive avec la suite de son épopée historique, BATTLEFIELD HEROES, et est invité en tant que membre du jury pour la compétition principale de Fantasia. Finalement, Lee Hae-young, responsable pour le film spirituel, LIKE A VIRGIN, présente FOXY FESTIVAL, une comédie intelligente au sujet de secrets et de désirs sexuels.

Cinq films de jeunes talentueux réalisateurs seront présentés, parmi lesquels on retrouve BLEAK NIGHT (Prix FIPRESCI), par Yoon Sung-hyun, et Haunters, par le jeune réalisateur Kim Min-suk, un thriller paranormal avec Kang Dong-won en vedette. Finalement, PRETTY ROMANCE, par Kim Jeong-hoon, offre une comédie romantique très appréciable. De plus, cette édition présentera deux courts-métrages impressionnants.NIGHT FISHING (Prix du Berlin Gold Bear en 2011) par Park Chan-wook (OLD BOY) et Park Chan-kyung a été réalisé avec un iPhone 4. Le deuxième court-métrage est GHOST(Cannes) par une jeune réalisatrice appelée Dahchi Ma. Durant Fantasia, Ciné-Asie organisera des événements cinématographiques culturellement diversifiés et inspirants : cours sur le cinéma d’action, cours sur la calligraphie de l’Asie de l’est, performance de cinq tambours coréens, concert d’histoires racontées et déjeuner industriel. Lee Joon-ik, the director of BATTLEFIELD HEROES:Born in Seoul in 1959, Lee has been a part of the film world since 1987 as a film director, producer and actor specializing in comedy and historic films. He has gained the world’s cinematic attention with the worldwide festival sensation “THE KING AND THE CLOWN (2005),” which made its way to the top of the box office in Korea, and led to an invitation to the Fantasia Film Festival along with “BLADES OF BLOOD (2010)”.He has also produced commercial films such as: “THE SPY” (1999), and “HI, DHARMA!” (2001), Fantasia invites him with his latest epic film, “BATTLEFIELD HEROES” (2011).The screening will be at 6:10 pm, July 3, Hall Theatre (Special spectacular presentation of “KOREAN FIVE DRUMS PERFORMANCE” before the film starts).

Lee Hae-young first showed his knack for poignant yet never pitying portrayals of sexual outsiders with the 2006’s LIKE A VIRGIN and he expands the scale of his tale with his new movie. In a public relations display, the cops are going to double their efforts at keeping one quiet neighbourhood free of indecency. Jang-bae is far from being the right cop for the job. He’s a total pig and he’s convinced that the world owes him everything. Right around the time, Jang-bae’s ego is shattered by the discovery of his girlfriend’s vibrator purchase, other naughty secrets’ surface.Lee Hae-young montra son don pour les portraits poignants et honnêtes des marginaux sexuels avec LIKE A VIRGIN, en 2006, et il étend l’ampleur de son propos avec son nouveau film. Cho-in didn’t have the happiest childhood and he has become a gaunt and a loner. He has a special strength, though. He has instant control over the mind and actions of anyone who falls under his gaze. It’s by chance that Cho-in meets Kyu-nam, who is his polar opposite. Their only similarity is that Kyu-nam has a power, too: he is resistant to physical damage. Leur seul point commun est que Kyu-nam est lui aussi doté d’un pouvoir; il résiste aux attaques physiques. Il s’avère aussi être la seule personne que Cho-in ne peut contrôler avec son esprit…

The entire film was shot on an iPhone 4, with a budget of $130,000, by celebrated director Park Chan-wook (OLDBOY), and Park Chan-kyong, an acclaimed visual and installation artist. In competition at Cannes 2011, Dahci Ma’s GHOST is about a starving man’s imagination, which gets bigger in an empty house. The man sucks on a chicken bone to fill his hunger, but it’s useless. He puts it down on the floor, and it turns into a doll and follows him around as his hallucination begins. GHOST was inspired by the director’s visit to Pusan, South Korea last year, where she witnessed a man who was hiding in an empty house in an area of the city filled with construction for re-development.

Dahci Ma is a South Korean filmmaker born in 1987. She started filmmaking right after dropping out of high school at the age of 14. Her short films have been shown at several international film festivals. She won the Jury Prize at 37th Dance on Camera Festival in New York in 2009 for THE MYSTERIES OF NATURE, the youngest director to ever win the prize. Dahci Ma est une réalisatrice sud-coréenne née en 1987. Elle a commencé sa carrière de cinéaste après avoir quitté l’école à l’âge de 14 ans. Ses courts métrages ont été sélectionnés dans de nombreux festivals de films et elle a remporté le Prix du jury au 37e Festival international Dance on Camera de New York en 2009 pour THE MYSTERIES OF NATURE et fut la plus jeune cinéaste à remporté ce prix. Dahci Ma a une vaste perspective en tant que réalisatrice issue du fait qu’elle a acquise de l’expérience en travaillant sur des films de différents genres et de différents styles.

Sackler Gallery, the Smithsonian Institution’s museums of Asian art, where he oversees a year-round program of classic and contemporary films from Asia. He regularly travels to film festivals and archives in Europe and Asia to research film programs. He is the author of Asian Cinema: A Field Guide (Collins Books). Cinéphile effréné qui écrit autant sur le cinéma contemporain que sur les tenants de l’histoire du cinéma, il a terminé la direction d’un ouvrage sur l’humanisme d’après-guerre japonais édité chez Panorama-cinéma en 2010. Il s’intéresse aux cinématographies est-asiatiques, à l’émergence des nouveaux cinémas nationaux, aux relations entre Histoire et cinéma et à l’intermédiarité (cinéma, bandes-dessinées, jeux vidéo). Editor at Panorama-cinéma, since feburary 2008, Mathieu Li-Goyette is currently completing on film studies and compared literature at the University of Montréal. A film buff, who writes more on the contemporary cinema, he edited a book on Japanese after-war humanism, published at Panorama-cinéma in 2010. His interest is in East Asian cinema, new national cinema, the relations between history and cinema, and the mix of cinema and comic-books, video games.

Nicolas Archambault has been a part of the programming team of the Asian section of Fantasia Festival since 2008. He studied cinema at Cégep de Saint-Laurent and chose to deepen his knowledge himself, by watching a lot of movies and by travelling. He often travelled to South Korea and Japan, to learn more about the classic and popular culture of these two nations. It is his first year as a co director of the Asian section of Fantasia.

Moderated by Peter Rist Peter Rist is a Professor of Film Studies at Concordia University where he has been Chair of the Department of Cinema/School of Cinema for three separate terms over the past eighteen years. His major area of research is on the various histories of film style. Over the last fifteen years he has written extensively on Korean, Japanese and Chinese-language films, and he regularly teaches a course entitled “Comparative Action Film: Hong Kong, Hollywood, Japan”Peter Rist est professeur en Études cinématographiques à l’Université Concordia, ayant siégé comme président du Département de cinéma/l’École de cinéma pendant trois mandats en 18 ans. Founded in 1996 by distinguished visual media artist Mi-Jeong Lee, Ciné-Asie aims to foster and encourage cross-cultural dialogue between Canada and Asia, as well as support the creation of independent works by Canadian filmmakers. The organization’s director Mi-Jeong Lee has been actively supporting Asian film-related events for the last 15 years. In 2010, Ciné-Asie also reactivated its own film festival, AmérAsia (www.amerasiafestival.com), to support Asian-Canadian cinema.

Fondé en 1996 par Mi-Jeong Lee, artiste réputé dans le milieu des médias visuels, Ciné-Asie tente de favoriser et d’encourager l’échange interculturel entre le Canada et l’Asie, tout en supportant les créations des oeuvres indépendantes de réalisateurs canadiens. Le directeur de l’organisation, Mi-Jeong Lee, supporte activement les événements reliés aux films asiatiques depuis les 15 dernières années. En 2010, Ciné-Asie a aussi remis en place son propre festival de films, AmérAsia (www.amerasiafestival.com), pour aider le cinéma asiatique canadien.

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONSTake a camera, make a video portrait on "FAMILY"!Montreal-based arts organization Ciné-Asie presents a sub-mission call to both filmmakers and film school students for short videos (5 minutes or less). In the 4rd edition of this competition, Ciné-Asie invites you to explore the unique relationship between Asia and Canada using video as a tool of expression to paint the portrait of your experience! A jury panel will determine the winners while an additional prize will be decided by audience vote. This competition will be showcased at AmerAsia Film Festival, March 1-11 2012 in Montreal, Canada.

AmérAsia Film Festival March 1-11, 2012

The AmérAsia International Film Festival is a five-day showcase of contemporary Asian cinema and media arts from Canadian and international artists. Ciné-Asie is inviting filmmakers to submit independent short, mid-length and feature films for the 3rd edition of the AmérAsia International Film Festival, to be held from March 1st - 11th, 2012 in Montreal, Canada. A new platform for networking and celebrating the recognition of Asian and Asian-Canadian independent film /video, AmérAsia is devoted to introducing audiences to Asian-themed and inspired media art productions.

The submission deadline for the 3rd edition of the AmérAsia International Film Festival is January 5th, 2012.

Le Festival International AmérAsia est un panorama de 5 jours consacré au cinéma et aux arts médiatiques asiatiques produits par des artistes canadiens et internationaux. Ciné-Asie invite les réalisateurs à soumettre des courts, moyens et longs métrages en vue de la 3e édition du Festival International du Film AmérAsia, qui se tiendra du 1er au 11 mars 2012 à Montréal, Canada. Une nouvelle plate-forme pour le réseautage ainsi que pour célébrer la reconnaissance des films et vidéos asiatiques et asiatiques-canadiens indépendants, AmérAsie a pour mission d’introduire les publics aux arts média-tiques à thème ou d’inspiration asiatique.

La date limite de soumission pour la 3e édition du Festival International AmérAsia est le 5 janvier, 2012.
