HOW DOES FAECALSEEDING WORK?
Progardes is a blend of Desmanthus cultivars selectedand bred by James Cook University for semi-arid grazingregions with clay-rich neutral to alkaline soils. ProgardesDesmanthus is persistent and naturally adapted to abroad range of harsh conditions across northern Australia.
Progardes Desmanthus is available in untreatedunscarified hard seed format.
When should faecal seeding be used?
Using livestock to distribute seed can be an effective toolin a well managed grazing system. Our studies havedemonstrated Progardes is well suited to dispersal bycattle and horses. Using goats or sheep is notrecommended as viability of seed is too low after passingthrough the gastro-intestinal tract of goats and sheep. Faecal seeding of Progardes is suited to lower rainfall(400-550mm per annum), particularly where rainfall isvariable and with uncertain follow-up falls. Spreadingseed using livestock can be used for steep, timbered orrocky country where tillage or mechanical seeding is notan option.

Progardes Desmanthus seedcan be purchased as hardseed suitable for faecalseeding. The hard seed coatprotects the seed fromgermination as it passesthrough the animal's gastrointestinal tract*. The seedthen sits in a viable state inthe dung ready to germinatewhen conditions are suitable.
Progardes Desmanthus iswell-suited to faecal seeding,being hardy, untreated,palatable and having excellentseed recruitment.
*Progardes is also available inscarified format for rapidgermination. Scarified seed isnot suitable for faecal seedingas it will not survive thegastro-intestinal tract in aviable state.

Progardes hard seed should be added into your lick tubsduring the feeding period at a recommended seeding rate of2kg/ha. Progardes can be mixed with molasses or dry lick. The quantity of seed required for your paddock will dependon the paddock area and the length of the feeding period.The longer your feed period, the better the establishment.

Achieving Even Dispersal ofSeed Across the Paddock Proactive management of lick feedingand livestock grazing patterns willincrease the likelihood of successfulpasture establishment.
Use these tips to ensure evendispersal of seed across your paddock.
Example Faecal Seeding Program
Use several lick tubs. The moretubs the better the dispersal.Using smaller tubs (100L) isalso recommended
Place lick tubs as far apartfrom each other, and fromwater troughs, as possible.This ensures cattle will walkbetween troughs, dispersingseed/pats widely
Move empty tubs to a newlocation (400m away) eachweek before refilling
Mix Progardes well throughyour lick when filling tubs
Manage watering points ifpossible (turn on/off) toencourage cattle to movearound the paddock. This willaid seed dispersal.
Start with your lick tubs as far away from troughs as possible. When empty, move tubs to a new location closer towards water before refilling.
Keep moving tubs every week.

How much seed will I need in my tubs each week? Simply multiply Step 3 by 7 to work out your weekly seed Qty=400 grams x 7 days = 2.8 kg per tub per week
