Mt. Hood Meadows began a soup-to-nuts overhaul of its workplace safety efforts a few years ago, resulting in remarkable reductions in worker comp claims and overall cost savings. It is now a model for the industry. Corinna Kupelwieser will present a case-study on their successes, including their emphasis on root-cause analyses, minimizing skier collisions and injuries while assisting guests, “near-miss” reporting on unsafe conditions and behaviors, and their focus on return-to-work efforts. She will also examine the resort’s innovative Leadership Safety University program that develops management and supervisor buy-in for these initiatives. Overall, the results have been demonstrable: the resort reduced claims by 70 percent, claims costs by 95 percent, lowered its injury rate to far below the ski indus-try’s 11.8 NAICS average – not to mention zero slip and fall claims last season! Drone demonstration This year, NSAA has arranged a special demonstra-tion of an innovative and exciting technology using aerial drones enabled to individually record skiers and riders shredding down the mountain. Cape Productions, a new supplier member of NSAA, invites you to check out the service and get filmed as you slide down the hill. To participate in, or watch, the demonstration, be ready load the Tram at 7:30. From the top, the group will ski across the Path To Paradise into Mineral Basin. The demon-stration itself will be held on the Powder Paradise run in Mineral Basin. Space is limited, with sign-ups taken on a first-come, first-served basis. Whether on US Forest Service land, or private land, ski areas need to understand the key exemptions that protect ski areas from federal minimum wage regulations. This session will focus on how ski areas can use two key exemp-tions under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and discuss operational changes areas may consider to minimize applicability of the executive order. Our expert panel will speak to the Department of Labor’s (DOL) new rules on this higher minimum wage, and how the US Forest Service will be interpreting these exemptions.
