WHO WE ARE?Urban Catalyst was founded in 2005 by Professor Klaus Overmeyer following the corresponding EU research project.

Since August 2017 Urban Catalyst operates as a limited liability company (LLC). Nine shareholders have since taken on the responsibility of generating a new organiza-tional practice in a cooperatively run business. We work collectively, meaning flat hierarchies with a high degree of self-sufficiency and responsibility in project-oriented teams. By bundling a broad scope of expertise within our bureau we bring cogent solutions to the complex field of urban development.

At Urban Catalyst, experts from urban planning, urban design, architecture and spatial planning work in inter-disciplinary teams in five business segments: "Strategic Planning", "Urban and Spatial Research", "Participation, Communication & Visualization", "Political Counselling" as well as the "UC-Academy", constituting a training platform for German and international organizations and businesses that focus on the future of urban living spaces.

WHAT MOTIVATES US? Urban areas represent decisive testing grounds for the transformation towards sustainable living. Increasing the efficient use of available resources is a necessity for the future of cities and our planet as a whole. Present struc-tures must be examined to find answers to the decisive questions of our future: With which values to we econo-mize? How do we share and design spaces? Who has a right to the city? We engage in field research, connect stakeholders with the wider community and col-lectively draft ideas as to how improve life in the city.

HOW DO WE WORK?Those who envision room for change, and recognize existing structures as building blocks, need new tools to realize their ideas. At Urban Catalyst, we vouch for a more diversified approach to planning. We combine established planning instruments with new development strategies and local knowledge with our expertise on in-ternational urban transformation. Together with partici-pating parties we conduct open and dynamic processes that aim at offering new outlooks to a given space.

WHO DO WE BENEFIT?Our competence benefits those who seek new pathways in fluctuating spaces. We offer support to internation-ally active organizations and urban networks, federal ministries, associations and communes, as well as project developers and local initiatives. In collaboration with all actors involved we promote future visions and planning frameworks along with strategies for implementation.

— We assist cities, businesses and or-ganizations in designing sustainable and participation based approaches to changing urban environments. —

STRATEGIC PLANNING

Urban Development Concepts Regional Development Concepts Integrated Quarter Development Urban Construction Planning Location Transformation Feasibility

Studies Dynamic Site Development Process Design

In response to the area of conf lict between global challenges and local transformation processes many cities are restructuring their entire urban develop-ment program. Where do we make space for new apartments? How can mobility become post fossil? Which spaces should be focused on considering resources being limited?

Our strategic concepts for quarters, cities and regions pinpoint the forces of spatial dynamics and make in-stitutions, initiatives, local actors, planning agencies and external experts into idea givers along the plan-ning process. Step by step we engineer resilient and strategic concepts that are designed to adapt accord-ing to the transformation of a given locality.

URBAN & SPATIAL RESEARCH

Transformation to sustainability in European and international context Co-productive urban construction Cities through actors Creative spaces Youth and urban development Development of rural areas

Fields of ResearchThe past few years we have intensified testing our innovative strategies at the crossroads of research-, administration- and stakeholder-level. We combine local practice with well-grounded science and an international outlook. It is important to us that recommendations for action and guidance are not only future oriented, but also feasible.

We offer our clients access to the most recent national and international research studies in the field of urban development. Urban Catalyst is consistently involved in research coopera-tions, involving leading universities, interna-tional organizations, communes and expert panels.

Our UC Academy encompasses numerous modules in which we communicate our wide range of knowledge in prevailing topics and methodo-logical approaches of urban development. The modules are arranged as cooperative work-shops. Expert opinion, teamwork on case studies, collective discussion rounds and innovative formats create unusual, inspiring perspectives to approach upcoming projects.

Our key to success is communication. We see our-selves as "translators" that merge expertise in planning with positions from management, economy and society. Tackling complex problems requires us to come up with coherent operation designs that consti-tute a guiding compass for all parties involved. We aim to expose and bring to life communication networks that would otherwise be left behind. By doing so, we generate unexpected and creative solutions.
