PROFILE IP3
Circuit Breaker Analyser
Multiple Trip Coils
PROFILE IP3 - INDEPENDENT POLE & DUAL TRIP COIL
Today many Transmission System Operators (TSO) use Independent Pole Circuit Breakers to
enhance power system stability and reliability. Each pole can be independently tripped and so the
circuit breaker requires three trip coils.
PROFILE IP3 | FEATURES
PROFILE IP3 is designed specifically for circuit breakers with multiple trip coils such as independent
pole and transmission circuit breakers with dual trip coils, provides a unique insight into their true
condition. Capturing the vital ‘first trip’ simultaneously on multiple trip coils, combined with powerful
analysis algorithms, shows how the breaker would perform in a real-life fault situation.
REPLAY PRO
The REPLAY PRO software is an integral part of the
PROFILE IP3 system which enables efficient profile
record storage, retrieval and analysis.
PROFILE IP3 | REPLAY PRO
Key Features Include: • Efficient storage of PROFILE IP3 records
Transmission Circuit Breakers often have dual trip coils to reduce the risk from a single coil
failure. The PROFILE IP3 can be used for both applications by connecting one or two interface
units as shown below.

Figure 1 - Independent Pole Circuit Breaker Online Test
Online Test Schematic diagrams (Figures 1 & 2) show how
the PROFILE IP3 is connected for testing an
independent pole circuit breaker and
transmission circuit breaker with dual trip coils to
capture the first trip operation.
• The DC current flowing through the trip
coils is measured by a Hall-Effect CT and provides analysis of both the trip coils and main mechanism operations
• The voltage probe measurement provides a
clear indication of the condition of the DC battery and associated wiring
• Peg CT’s indicate when the current flowing in each pole has been interrupted, which gives main contact time
A slow tripping transmission
circuit breaker can cause major
disruptions on power networks
resulting in:
• System instability • Widespread loss of supply • Damage to plant • Potential safety issues • CI / CML financial penalties
Conventional testing requires a circuit
breaker to be isolated. However this
first trip operation can often
temporarily clear any slow tripping
problem.
Therefore capturing the first trip
operation is essential for effective
circuit breaker condition monitoring.
The PROFILE IP3 offers a cost
effective solution by enabling:
• Fast and simple online test • Capture vital first trip operation • Simultaneous acquisition of
multiple trip coil profiles • Onsite analysis of breaker defects • Efficiently target critical
resources
PROFILE IP3 is a powerful
diagnostic tool for analysing:
• Main contacts operating time • Auxiliary contacts operating time • ‘Health’ of Close & Trip coils • Condition of DC battery circuit • Auxiliary contact condition
After a ‘First Trip’ test has been completed,
results will be displayed on the PROFILE IP3
as shown below.
The values of the key parameters, such as
Buffer, Acon & Mcon can be individually
selected and displayed for each phase.
Analysing Test Results on PROFILE IP3
effectively manage their assets.
The REPLAY PRO software can be downloaded
from the Camlin Power website to any PC where the
data can be accessed locally or made available to
multiple users on a central server.

PROFILE IP3
• Comparison of the first trip for each coil
with subsequent operations can be done on the PROFILE IP3 and REPLAY PRO.
Offline Test The schematic diagram (Figure 3), shows how the
PROFILE IP3 is connected for an independent
pole Offline Test when the circuit breaker has been
isolated.
The connections for measuring the Main Contact
Time (MCON) are the same for a standard
transmission circuit breaker.
The addition of an offline Interface unit enables DC
current to be injected through each pole of the
circuit breaker.
This enables the main contact and ‘pole-spread’
times to be accurately measured.

After tests have been completed they can be
saved for subsequent retrieval from the
Auxilary menu. A record can be selected and
graphed, which displays a Trip / Close profile
for each phase as shown below. Up to four test records can be graphed for comparison and analysis. The First Trip / Close profiles on any phase can be compared with subsequent Trip / Close profiles.
