I t is with great pride we have now completed our first David Young and Company e-magazine. Most of you will agree that our world is moving at a rapid pace and for those of us lucky enough to be enjoying this robust market in Houston, we are especially grateful.

With so much growth comes change. The number one reason we are bursting with pride as we launch our e-magazine is that the entire issue, from concept to completion, is a collaborative production created and produced in-house. Yes, in-house. By the same branding and marketing center, media production and professional photographers that immerse their talent into each and every listing or community project.

Our agent partners are the most talented and forward thinking agents in Houston. They demand the same standards and innovation from us and we perform.

The Summer Wind is Whisperingand the sun is blazing relentlessly. I am standing at the end of our diving board, my eight-year old feet wrinkled by the umpteenth hour of extended water exposure. I stare into the crystal blue rippling waves and I think…is my mom watching? Somewhere in the distance I hear “Marco!…Polo...Marco!” I raise my arms in an exaggerated Olympic posture poised for the dramatic decent into the abyss that is our deep end. The spectators will definitely cheer…a standing ovation possibly! It seems higher from up here. I adjust my swimsuit bottoms discreetly. Then suddenly, with a swift bounce I fly into the air and into what would become a summer of fond memories growing up in 1980 Houston, Texas.

rilling hamburgers, drinking cold lemonade and swimming. These are three summertime staples that have become the foundation of great memories. But did you know that the first man-made pool was designed in

B.C? “The Great Bath” at the site of Mohenjo-Daro in modern-day Pakistan was most likely the first swimming pool, dug during the 3rd millennium BC. This pool is 12 by 7 meters, is lined with bricks and was covered with a tar-based seal and is called the “earliest public water tank of the ancient world”. The Great Bath” has a maximum depth of 2.43 meters, two wide staircases, one from the north and

one from the south which served as the entry to the structure. A hole was also found at one end of the Bath which might have been used to drain the water out. Many scholars have suggested that it could have been a place for ritual bathing or religious ceremonies, but the actual use is not clear.

Home swimming pools became popular in the United States after World War II. The publicity given to swimming sports by Hollywood film stars like Esther Williams, The Million Dollar Mermaid, made a home pool a desirable status symbol. More than fifty years later, the home or residential swimming pool is ubiquitous and even small nations enjoy a thriving swimming pool industry (e.g. New Zealand pop. 4,116,900 [Source NZ Census 7 March 2006] - holds the record in pools per capita with 65,000 home swimming pools and 125,000 spa pools). A two-story, white concrete swimming pool building composed of horizontal cubic volumes built in 1959 at the Royal Roads Military College is on the Registry of Historic Places of Canada.

According to the Guinness World Records, the largest swimming pool in the world is San Alfonso del Mar Seawater pool in Algarrobo, Chile. It is 3,323 feet long covering an area of 20 acres and at its deepest, it is 115 feet deep!

Today a swimming pool in your backyard can add appeal to prospective buyers when selling your home. When you are in the market for a home, be sure to ask your Realtor about pools and other aquatic outdoor features. A professional Realtor can guide you through the process and advise you on what you should know before buying a home with a pool. Here’s to hot summer days, relaxing poolside and lasting memories....

DRESS UP YOUR KITCHEN

The Kitchen is the Heart of the home, and now designers are focusing on making it a space that exudes beauty and elegance. Trends in 2014 according to Elle Decor magazine include cabinetry painted in rich gemstone colors, and accented with brass or chrome. Don’t forget to finish it off with unexpected chandliers or vogue fixtures.

ETHNIC PRINTS Ethnic fabrics, upholstery and prints look like they are a popular trend this year. Adding a fresh zest look to your home from exotic lands can break the monotony of boring bland interiors and traditional throw pillows. If authentic, these pieces can be fantastic conversational pieces.

TRUE BLUE

Blue…all shades of blue are without a doubt a massive trend this year. We are seeing it everywhere, from home design to fashion shows. A rainbow of different shades of blue interacting with each other in the same room excite the senses. Use it in accessories, soft furnishings, couches, cushions, cupboards, walls and anywhere else you can imagine it. Blue is big in 2014.

BRASS IS CLASS Brass has the ability to be luxurious or very tacky. It’s important to inspect designs to determine what is classy and what is not. When done right, brass looks luxurious. It’s timeless, and is a trend becoming highly popular. In 2014 we are seeing a rise in the circulation of brass, particularly in the kitchen, bold brass bathtubs, lamp stands and other ornamental pieces.

WE’RE TALKING TURQUOISE Turquoise has pizazz, style and personality. Lots of it. We are seeing splashes of it everywhere, and when done correctly, can make a breathtaking statement. Turquoise is one of those surprising and scary colors that we should not be afraid to use anymore. It’s here to stay and for that...we are so grateful.

Page 17: Profile eMagazine - Summer 2014

17Black and WhiteIt’s been a staple in interior design over the years, but now

we’re seeing a shift to softer tones of black and white, taking that harsh edge off of the contrast. The softer

tones are easier on the eye, they’re comfy and relaxing, yet they don’t take the edge off the swank. This is a trend

which has been evolving over the past couple of years and evidence from the design hemisphere shows a continuation in strength over 2014. An almost

timeless trend that will look good for a long time to come.

GlamourThis is all about creating mood. Huge expanses of plain white, lifeless walls will be replaced with interest, mood and character. Think daring and valorous, making a state-ment with every element of the design. Interesting and metallic accessories will be the perfect accompaniment; supplementing, complimenting and adding to the glam. A weaker trend for 2014, but still growing at an increasing rate.

DiscoverMemorial

Houston is a great city for outdoor running with its many trails, and Memorial Park is easily the most popular place to run in Houston. The Seymour Lieberman Ex-ercise Trail is just under three miles and named after a Houstonian who became one of the first regular runners at Memorial Park when the loop around the golf course consisted of nothing more than a grass path. In 1949, Lieberman founded the

Junior Olympics, and in the 1950s and 1960s, he wrote articles and books promoting jogging and its health benefits. The park dedicated the trail to Lieberman in 1978 the same time that the city replaced the worn out grass path with pine bark and mulch. In the 1980s, the trail received additional updates, including lights, a stretching area, water fountains, and a more durable crushed granite surface

that dries quickly after a rain.

Honoring The Heroes Who Served and Serve To Hold Our Flag High

As you enjoy your grilling time with your family or enjoy your weekend at the beach getting tanned, remember that there are men and women who have fought for the freedom we have now. We must commit ourselves to standing up for veterans. We must never stop fighting for our veterans. They never stopped fighting for us, sacrificing for us, and so many gave their last dying breath for us. It is up to us now to honor those still with us, and the survivors of those who have passed, by fulfilling the nation’s promise to our protectors–our military veterans.–God Bless America
