The inaugural Shooting Star Classic 8-Ball Tournament kicked off with a 64-player Scotch Doubles event on Friday. Scotchteams saw the likes of former touring professional Jimmy Wetch and multiple masters champ Mario Parayno as a team. With thefield dwindled to the final 12 players, still undefeated are Iowa’s finest Jerrod Frideres and Dustin Gunia versus Minnesota’s badboys Beau Runningen and Tony Hilla. The 128-player Men’s Open field was underway by noon on Saturday and saw a 12 player waitlist, most of who either got in or

played in the Masters. Some notable players were Midwest young gun Chase Plumley, Chicago’s Shannon Schroeder fighting hisway back from the B-side, and Canadian rock stars Andrew Thomas, Joe Kluka, and Blair Lawson. 2008 BCA 9-Ball Challenge runner-up Demetrius Jelatis remains East, awaiting the winner of Broadway Billiards’ Marc Oel-

September 18, Efren Reyes stood in front ofcameras and a microphone held by the Galve-ston Classic’s tour director, Ken Shuman, and

explained that yes, he was very happy to have wonthe match that earned himthe title of the Classic’s firstOne-Pocket Champion.“Well, you know, I feelgood now, because I win,” heemphasized. “but you knowbefore, I got a lot of pressure.”It was pressure that was

felt in the room, whereabout 150 spectatorswatched and gasped and ap-plauded. It was shared bymembers of an audience of over 1,700 viewers of the UStreambroadcast, who kept typing “Wow!” While the nature of theone-pocket game can often make spectating akin to (as oneUStream contributor noted) “watching paint dry,” the finalgame of this Galveston Classic One-Pocket tournament, was asriveting a game of pool as you’re ever likely to see.On Tuesday, Reyes had been delivered to the west bracket’s

semifinal match by Shannon Daulton, who’d started the tour-nament with two come-from-behind wins and hadn’t given upa single game since his second round, 3-2 victory over ShaneVan Boening. Daulton got into the hot seat with a 3-1 victoryover Reyes, and though he later expressed a great deal ofrespect for Reyes’ opponent in the semifinals – Cliff Joyner – hefully expected that it’d be Reyes coming back at him.Two days went by, during which a certain amount of heat was

applied to the water of anticipation. More was added, as Reyesdropped Joyner into third place without losing a game early onThursday evening. By the time Daulton and Reyes stepped tothe table for the final match, the pressure was boiling the water. It was a true double elimination format, so if Reyes wanted

that first-place, $15,000 check, he was going to have to defeatDaulton twice. Fast forward through an opening set, as Reyesforces a second set, giving up only a single game. Reyes openedthe deciding match by scratching on the break and though he’ddo it again in that opening game and allow Daulton to sink thefirst three balls, he came back to win the opener with an 8-2ball win. In a 7-minute second game, Reyes took only 10 shots,

Reyes Reigns in Galveston One Pocket

sinking eight of them to goup 2-0.In game three, the longest

of the second set (25minutes), with Reyes break-ing, Daulton took an early 5-

0 lead off of his first six shots. He’d sink only one more, asReyes clawed his way back to within one at 6-5. Reyes got alook at his first potential $15,000 winning shot in that game, but when he missed it, Daulton sunk his eighth and lived tofight another day.Daulton started to bear down in the fourth game, taking only

15 shots to sink his eight. Reyes, who sank only two balls in 10trips to the table, never got a look at a match-winning shot andit was hill-hill.“It’s only fitting,” said tour director, Ken Shuman, momentsbefore the start of the final game, “that it all boil down to this.”For the first time in either set, Reyes changed his chosen

one-pocket on the final break. It worked for him, apparently, because after Daulton took his first shot in that deciding game,Reyes ran four in a row. Daulton came right back and sankthree. Eight trips (four each) to the table later, Reyes made it5-3, but Daulton stepped up and sunk three in a row that puthim out in front 6-5. His shot at the next ball, however, landedinto a knot of three of them in front of Reyes’ pocket. The cueball kicked backwards, leaving Reyes a clean shot at one balland with pinpoint control of the cue, gave him position to sinkthe next two, including what turned out to be only his secondshot at the $15,000 winning ball.“I played as good as I possibly could,” said Daulton in a post-match interview with Shuman. “Looking back, even in thatlast shot I played, I played position and it was as much as mil-limeter, twice, that cost me the tournament.”

It shaped up earlyas a tough match, with the two tradingracks to a 4-4 tie.Alcano took thenext four, which in-cluded a ‘criticaljuncture’ 10th game,in which Archertapped a hanging 7-ball that failed todrop and thenmissed a ‘kick shot’that gave Alcanoball in hand. Insteadof 6-5, it was 7-4and Alcano capitalized, reaching the hill on the next game.Archer came back to win the 13th game, though its bad-luckconnotations came right back to haunt him. A bad-luck rollon the break put the cue ball in a pocket and Alcano took ballin hand and ran it out for the win.

Ronnie Alcano, after a six-match trip through a field of91 entrants in the Galveston Classic’s Open 8-Ballevent, defeated Johnny “The Scorpion” Archer on

Sunday night, September 20, to finish the event undefeatedand take home the first place prize.Along the way, Alcano had chalked up victories over Shane

Van Boening, Alex Pagalayun and Rodney Morris to get intothe event’s final eight bracket. From there, he sent Larry Nevelwest in a hill-hill battle, before meeting Roberto Gomez in thehot seat match and sending him to the semifinals 9-7.Archer, in the meantime, had to work from the one-loss side.

He’d gotten a bye in the opening round, and moved pastJonathan “Hennessee from Tennessee” Pinegar and Scott Frostbefore running into Jose Parica, who sent him west 9-4. Archerthen began a series of impressive wins over Efren Reyes 9-6,Charlie Bryant 9-3 and Corey Deuel 9-3 to get right back intothe thick of things among the event’s final eight. From there,he put Dennis Orcollo into the tie for seventh place 9-2, Nevelinto the tie for fifth 9-4 and defeated Nick Varner in the quar-terfinals 9-1. A 9-2 win over Gomez put him into the finalsagainst Alcano.

Korean phenom, Yu Ram Cha, certainlyhad her work cut out for her going intoday 5 of the Women’s Pro 9-Ball Tourna-

ment at the Galveston World Classic, but wouldprove to be up for the challenge. Cha had suf-fered a loss in early rounds to Allison Fisher butwould have her chance at revenge. After takingdown the former European Champion, LineKjorsvik, Cha would have to beat Fisher twice inthis true double elimination tournament.Fisher, Cha and Kjorsvik pose with their new-

found hardware that they picked up at theWomen’s Pro 9-Ball at the Galveston World Classic.Taking an early lead at 4-0 in this race to 9,

Cha seemed to be very much in control of thematch. However, in the winner break format, youcan never count Fisher out. Fisher finally got agood look at the table and closed Cha’s lead to 6-5. It would beall Cha from that point on as she went on to win 10 games in arow, closing out the first set 9-5 and running thru the begin-ning of the second set 6-0. It looked as if Cha would shutFisher out in the second race, which was a race to 7, but she

had an unfortunate scratch on the 9-ball to give Fisher heronly game in that set. Yu Ram Cha won her first major title inthe U.S. and pocketed $6,000 for her efforts this week as Fisherwould take home $3,000 for second.

It was fitting that the first-ever Galveston Classic came to aclose with a match that came down to a final set and then,a final game, before Mika Immonen spoiled a Filipino sweep

of the three major men’s events - One-Pocket, 8-Ball and 10-Ball. Immonen, in the hot seat for the 10-Ball event, droppedthe opening set of the true double elimination final on Sundaynight, September 20, then came back to defeat Warren Kiamcoin the second set and capture the $25,000 first prize.Though it would be misleading to describe any path to the

finals of this 10-Ball event as ‘easy,’ Immonen’s path took himthrough an opening round bye and four opponents that put himinto the event’s final eight bracket. He defeated Dee Adkins11-5, Dennie Strickland 11-8, Gabe Owen 11-5 and RodolfoLuat 11-8. Once into the final eight bracket, things got a littletrickier as he faced Shane Van Boening and had to survive ahill-hill match that put him into the hot seat match againstMike Dechaine.Warren Kiamco, in the meantime, was embarked on an 11-

match epic journey that began when Dennie Strickland senthim to the one-loss side, with a double hill win in the openinground. Kiamco then marched through John D. Hagar 9-3,shutout Hunter Blackwell and defeated John Schmidt 9-6.Things didn’t get any easier as he faced Dennis Orcollo, defeat-ing him 9-6, got by Steve Moore 9-3 and battled the eventualwinner of the 8-Ball event, Ronnie Alcano in another hill-hillcontest. A win over Luat 9-7 put him into the one-loss side ofthe final eight bracket, where he dropped Efren Reyes into thetie for seventh place 9-3, sent Johnny Archer into the tie forfifth with a 9-7 win and handled Francisco Bustamante in thequarterfinals in his second hill-hill match.Ten down, with potentially three to go. Kiamco defeated

Dechaine 9-7 to get into the finals and knew going in, that he’dhave to take Immonen twice if he wanted to be out in front ofthe $13,000 that separated first from second place ($25K-$12K).He’d have to beat him in first, a race to 11, and if he managedthat, he’d have to take him a second time in a race to nine.Immonen won the lag in the opening game of the first set

and took it to lead 1-0. Kiamco came back and used a carom offof the 9-ball to sink the 10-ball and tie it. The two traded racksto a 3-3 tie, at which point Kiamco reeled off a 6-pack that puthim two games away from winning the opening set. He had a.908 average at this juncture (attempts/made balls), whileImmonen was at .793. Immonen took the next two, and the In-ternet ‘buzz’ of some 1,200 viewers started to sense a comeback. But Immonen missed an easy shot on the 6-ball in the 15thrack and Kiamco was on the hill. He took the deciding game of

the opening set and the Galveston Classic 10-Ball competitioncame down to the final race to nine.Kiamco took the lead in the second set, but not for long.

They battled back and forth to their second 3-3 tie, whenImmonen took two in a row, opening the largest lead he’downed since the finals started. Kiamco battled right back toknot things at five apiece and then, back and forth they went;one game at a time to a 7-7 tie and then, a lead for Kiamco, that put him on the hill, breaking for the championship. Theresultant tension didn’t last long, as Immonen took advantageof a 3-10 combination that resulted in double hill and a singlegame for all the marbles. Immonen took it and the game, match and Galveston City Classic was over.“Every time I play Mika” said Kiamco, moment’s later. “it’salways close.”Commenting on his 2-to-1 advantage in safety shots during

the final match, Immonen noted that he was playing gooddefense all the time, but (Kiamco) kept coming back with goodkicks. “All in all,” he added, “it was a crazy battle; neck andneck in that second set.”

Orlando, Florida- Johnny “Scorpion” Archer showedthe world that he is not only a master of 9-Ball and 10-Ball, but he can beat the best

of them at 14.1. Archer cruised relatively easily tothe finish line unscathed and demolished MikaImmonen in the finals to capture the Mezz Classic14.1 title. The Mezz Classic features both 10-Balland 14.1 titles. Pros and amateurs from around thecountry and the world will come to Orlando August5-9,2009 for all the events taking place at CornerPocket Billiards including the Ozone Billiards USAmateur Open. The Dragon Promotions productionswere presented by sponsors Ozone Billiards, MezzCues, Brunswick Billiards, Simonis Cloth, AramithBalls, Master Chalk, Laser Rack, Gambler, On theSnap Cue Repair, and House of Billiards.“This is the first straight pool title I’ve won since 1993, so

it’s been quite awhile since no one can remember that event. It’s really meaningful to me to win this because it shows I canplay other games well, too and I’m not stung by the Hall ofFame jinx,” said Archer in his finals speech. Archer was refer-ring to the past Hall of Famers who weren’t able to win titlesafter their induction. Archer also won the Gem City Classic afew weeks earlier.Immonen took a loss to Archer on the winner’s side in a lop-

sided match before Mika eliminated pre-event favoriteThorsten Hohmann in a close 150-114 match, keepingHohmann at 3rd and from defending his title. This gave Mikaa second chance to avenge himself. Immonen also finished 2ndin last year’s 14.1 event. Archer had a nailbiting 150-132match with 14.1 newbie Shane Van Boening who ended in avery respectable 3rd place tie with Hohmann.Though the paper favorite, Immonen was not able to

contain Archer in either attemptsIn the Immonen/Archer showdown #2, Immonen desired to

fire back a closer match. Unfortunately, it was not to be asArcher took early control of the match and never relinquishedhis lead. Archer dominated the race with a final 200-80 scoreand won his first 14.1 title in 16 years.

but in this case that isnot true. In fact,“spot-on-the-wall”systems can offergreater accuracy since they give us aprecise and small target on the first rail, while most calculating systems rely onlarge, fractional segments to make thecalculations easier. There are two thingsto remember about these systems. One,always shoot the cue ball to find the ref-erence track. Often a table does not playwith the same sort of symmetry that welike to use in illustrations. Two, one mustlearn exactly how far the spot should befrom the table for a specific kick shot. Alllines will converge at a point whose dis-tance changes with the number of rails. For simple, one-rail kicks, the spot willbe exactly one table width out for a shotlike the one in the diagram or one tablelength out for a one-rail kick that goesoff the short rail. In the absence of thatprecise knowledge we can achieve goodresults by placing the spot about 8-12 feetpast the table. Although we’re looking at a simple,

one-rail shot in the diagram, the sameprinciples apply to multiple rail kicks. Toexperiment, find a reference track for atwo or three rail kick shot and find a spoton that track beyond the table. Thenmove the cue ball to various places andrepeat the same kick shot by aiming atthe spot with the same stroke thatworked on the reference track. While Iam giving a very simple presentationhere, “spot-on-the-wall” systems gorather deep and are used by top playerseverywhere for their reliability and math-ematical consistency. Don Posri will beDr. Cue’s guest to give a full presentationof his systems at the Kicking and BankingWorkshop at Shakespeare’s, May 15. Don’tmiss the opportunity to learn these essen-tial skills from two of the game’s greats.

Spot on the Wall

About two months ago my heartwas broken. It happened whena friend and I wanted to shoot a

little pool and eat some of the best Thaifood in town, the perfect combo in myopinion and one that a person couldenjoy in what was probably the onlyplace in the U.S. with a nine-foot tableand authentic Panang Curry. That placewas China Doll and for those who don’tknow what I’m talking about, I’m sorry—almost as sorry as I was when I saw thesign on the door informing us that thebusiness had closed. China Doll was morethan a place to eat and shoot pool butwas a unique environment which, despiteits rough exterior, was as warm and wel-coming as its owners, Rosie and DonPosri, who, until they find a new loca-tion, will be sadly missed throughout theDenver pool community. That’s the bad news. The good news is

that I ran into Rosie and Don a fewweeks later and learned that Don is nowteaching pool. So I’d like to welcomehim to the world of billiards educationand share some of his superior knowledge.Although Don knows the game from topto bottom, his particular area of expertiselies in the art of kicking, specifically theemployment of “spot-on-the-wall”systems to make kick shots from one tofive rails simpler and more accurate atthe same time. Don recently wrote a de-tailed book on the topic called, Time OutFor Billiards, and has graciously allowedme to use it for this column. To summarize, “spot-on-the-wall”

systems can be used for all types of kickshots and are based on the mathematicalpremise that, for any type of kick shot, alllines that will pocket the ball converge atone point. The trick therefore is to findthat point with a reference track andthen match it up to something that wecan use as an aiming point for any shot of

the same type, regardless of the cue ball’sorigin. In order to simplify the learning Iam including an illustration from thebook for a basic, one-rail kick shotwithout english. For the one-rail kick in the diagram,

Don shows the reference track with thethick, black line that goes from the sidepocket, through the center diamond onthe opposite long rail and out to thepoint illustrated with the “time out” flag.In a poolroom, where we typically find aconspicuous absence of flags, we mustlook for other marks on the walls or fur-niture surrounding the tables. Generallyit’s not a good idea to choose a featurethat’s permanently attached to a personsuch as a kneecap or a nostril unlessthere is nothing else around and thatperson is extraordinarily sedentary. Asedentary person by poolroom standardsmight be someone who hasn’t left hischair since the Nixon administration.

Once we have a reference track estab-lished and a spot along that line ex-tended beyond the table, we can movethe cue ball around the table and pocketthe kick shot by aiming at the spot outon the reference track. The main featuresof “spot-on-the-wall” systems are theirsimplicity, their consistency and theelimination of calculations. One mightassume that with simplicity we mighthave to accept less accuracy as a tradeoff,

Two Rails First-IIby Robert Byrne

From “Byrne’s Complete Book of Pool Shots”

with permission

This two-rail kick is not easy, because it depends onmoving both the object ball

and the cueball a considerable dis-tance. The key is to hit the correct side

of the first ball. It is much easier tocalculate a safety shot if you onlyhave to concern yourself with theroll of one ball.

This is a real pretty “out” especially if you need only twoor even all three balls. From this position you can onlymake one ball unlessyou can kick the 6 ball to hit just

above the center diamond along thefront side rail. Sometimes the cueball will drift across table and makethe ball in the opposite cornerwhich must be spotted after youmake the 6 and 3. Shoot just hardenough to leave the 6 near yourpocket, should you miss. To preventa scratch in the left corner pocketmake sure the 6 ball is near the headrail and at least a ball’s distancefrom the pocket.

So you want Consistency in your Game

goes through the cue ball in a tight, solidmanner and gives you a truer response. We must go through the cue ball with

absolute precision. Those who have devel-oped good speed dynamics are using theexact same grip on every shot. They maychange their position on the cue with theirgrip, but they are using the same tightnessin their grip that they use on all shots. There is no give, or hop or inconsistencyin their play. Therefore they become moreconfident in their game.A player like this will esperience

stronger trust skills. When the money ison the line, they can trust themselves todeliver the winning stroke. They winmore games simply because they knowthey are going to deliver a quality hit onthe cue ball. This gives them confidence.Next time you get a chance, compare a

quality grip to a choke stroke. You will seea vast difference.Grip is directly related to a good stance.

You cannot have a good grip with a poorstance. Remember, the true measurementof a good grip and stance is in the qualityof hit. You will not rise to the top if youare constantly fighting your grip andstance. The grip and stance must work foryou. It must serve you so you can conserveenergy for the tough matches. When you experience fatigue late in a

tournament it can be traced to your strug-gles with grip and stance. You are working

If you hit the shot the same way everytime, you will become a consistentplayer. Almost every student I en-

counter is looking for consistency intheir game. And why not? If you cantrust yourself to turn in a fine perform-ance, you will win more games, moretournaments, and raise your leagueaverage. In addition, you will enjoy thisgame. You won’t have to hold your breath to

see which one of you shows up for thematch. Sometimes the good player showsup and gets off to a big lead, then, in themiddle of the match, the good playerchanges heads with the bad player and hecan’t make three balls in a row. We don’twant this to happen to you. Consistencyis worth working for. It takes a professionalapproach to the fundamentals in order toachieve consistency in your game.First of all, you need a good grip. A firm

grip. If your grip changes, even the slight-est, it will change the shot. So we mustmaster a firm grip. Place an object ball nearthe number one diamond on the long rail.Put your cue ball on the back rail. You areabout a foot away from the object ball, with your cue ball on the rail. Shoot thisshot down into the corner pocket withyour normal grip. Now shoot it with atight grip. At the moment of impact, squeeze the cue in your hand, notice thedifference, your hit is solid. The cue tip

too hard, wearing yourself out. You are notletting your grip and stance work for you.Your stance must put you in position to

see the angle of the shot. If you are havehaving a hard time seeing the shot, it canbe corrected in your stance. It must be wellbalanced. If someone pushes you while youare in your stance, you should not fall over. For right handers, your right shoulder

needs to be in a direct line with your target.Pretend you are looking at the shot froman eye in your right shoulder. Your left footis in line with the shot. And your innerright thigh is in line with the shot. Onceyou accomplish this solid stance, all youneed to do now is deliver a quality hit onthe cue ball and let the shot work for you.I have a four part training session avail-

able to you on line. We work together toshore up your approach to this game. Youcan read about this on www.monkbilliar-dacademy.net if you take those four lessonsyour game will be better than you everdreamed it could be.

Frozen Jumps

This issue I want to teach you to shoot a shot that comesup every now and again, but is often overlooked. Thereare occasions where your cue ball will be frozen to a

ball, in this case one of your own. It is difficult to decide how toproceed because you must make a legal hit on a ball and sinceyou are frozen, many opponents will accuse you of adouble-kiss if you shoot through the ball. In my dia-grammed shots, the cue ball is frozen to the objectball. When these instances come up and you chooseto shoot through the ball, make sure your opponentchecks that they are frozen to assure that there willbe no double-kiss. If they are even 1mm apart, whenshooting through the ball, you invariably double-kissand foul on the shot. Most people understand how to shoot through a

ball but few can accurately calculate the cue ball’spath. This is something I call “splitting tangents.” Inmy illustration, take the line of resistance to the sidepocket and the desired line to the object ball and make a Vwith the two vectors. Your aim point is going to be a vectorthat bisects that angle. This is a rough estimate, for today’s pur-poses, since there is more physics involved than this simplegeometry, but play with it and you’ll get the hang of it. (Thiscomes in handy in 9-ball when you’re frozen on the one withthe nine hanging!)If you can split a tangent with a level cue, can you not also

split tangents with your Eric Yow Jump Cue? Of course! It addsa third dimension, elevation, but it’s easy to get the hang of,particularly if you have a Yow! Jump Cue. My signature jumpcues have a black phenolic tip and a stainless steel ferrule, making jump shots particularly easier to accomplish and to doso with accuracy and precision. In the bottom example de-picted, take the angle created by the resistance line and thedesired line to the far corner pocket. Split that angle in yourmind and prepare for a jump shot at about 40 degrees of eleva-tion. I use a dart stroke. You will have to hit a little harder thanusual because of the resistance of the frozen ball, though not bymuch if you’re using a Yow! Jump Cue. Your aim point may bea little farther or shorter than you estimate, depending on theway you stroke your jump shots. But, shoot directly through theball and watch the cue ball travel down table to make the ballin the corner. A little inside spin will help it hug the long railif it comes in short.A fun shot is when you are closer to the blocker balls, top

left, and you must hold the cue ball for a shot on the next ball.Splitting the tangent, use more elevation with low-left English,

We are very proud to have won this tour-nament twice. “We didn’t think we would get into the final but when webeat China, Efren said we will win this tournament. We don’tplay much together normally, then we came together for theWorld Cup and it’s amazing that we won, it was very tough.”Defeated Ralf Souquet could not hide his disappointment at

Ga Young Kim Wins WPBA Colorado Classic

The Final match of the 2009WPBA Colorado Classic is set, with Kelly Fisher looking for her

first win of 2009. Meanwhile, the 2009U.S. Open 9 Ball Champion, Ga YoungKim, was gunning for her second win thisseason! We knew this could end up aquick match since both players areknown for their fast play. Young had the advantage with 3-1 lead

going into game 5.Kelly is never one to give up easily, and

went into game 5 with the break. Shepocketed a ball, and proceeded to navi-gate through the rack. The only problemball was the 3, sitting behind the 8 onthe side rail. She decided to play a safe, leaving Ga Young to jump. Once againher trusty jump cue worked, making the5 ball carom off of the 3 but she wasforced to play safe on the 3 ball. Shecame up short, leaving Kelly with a verylong spot shot. She made it, but anothersafety battle was underway on the 4.Kelly came out ahead on that one, butthe crowd groaned as she scratched offthe 4 ball and Ga Young ran out to take a4-1 lead. Ga Young broke, made a balland came back off the one ball for shapeon the 2, breaking it away from the 9 ballthat it was tied up with. Her cue ball dieda bit on her though, and she was onlyinches away from the 2. She played anamazing back cut shot, sending the cueball 3 rails around the table, pocketingthe 4 ball that had been sitting deep inthe corner pocket. She gained shape onthe five ball, sinking it down the rail, butwas presented with a problem from the 6to the 7. The 7 was below the 8 ballabout 4”, and Ga Young came to theshort side of the ball. Instead of trying forthe offensive cut shot, she elected to playsafe, sticking the cue ball behind the 8

and sending the 7 ball uptable to rest on the rail.Kelly had only the short railkick shot available to her,and missed the ball entirelygiving Ga Young ball inhand and in record time, GaYoung took a 5-1 lead. Kellybroke in game 7, pocketinga ball and played a great safeon the 1. Ga Young was forcedto kick 2 rails, successfully hitting theball, leaving the cue ball on the end railand the one ball 8’ away. It was a toughnearly straight in shot that Kelly faced, and she couldn’t come with the shot. ButGa Young couldn’t make the long slicedown the rail and Kelly was able topocket the one ball in the side. She con-tinued on in an attempt to stop thebleeding in this match and ran out, down2-5. But Ga Young had the break in game8, making a ball and putting together anawesome run out after some tricky Posi-tion play through the first 4 balls of therack. She was now on the hill, 6-2. Kelly broke in game 9, and although

she made a ball, she had no open pocketfor the 1 ball, much to her obviousdisgust. She tried a tough 1/7 combina-tion, perhaps out of frustration, and leftGa Young with the cue ball sitting overthe 7 forcing her to jack up. She missedthe 1 and Kelly stepped back to thetable. She executed a poor safety and GaYoung, feeling no fear, made a bank intothe side pocket. She would have to do itagain for the 2, but missed it. Just as luckhad it, she snookered the cue ball behindthe 5 while the 2 went up table, andKelly kicked one rail. She hit the ball, leaving Ga Young with a partial jumpshot. This time though, her jump cuefailed her as the 2 ball hung in the

pocket. Kelly focused all of her energyinto this rack, running out but still down3-6. Ga Young went into game 10 with the

break advantage and pocketed 3 balls! She had the 2 ball first, then the 3, 5, 7,8 & 9 left between her and her 2nd titleof the 2009 Season winning 7-3. Many thanks go out to Sky Ute Casino

Recreation Expo to Wednesday, July 14 through Friday, July 16, 2010 at the Las Vegas Convention Center.“There have been no changes to the location, exhibit halls or floor plans of the Expo. This unanimous vote of the BCA Boardof Directors finally puts the show date issue to rest,” said Ivan Lee, chairman of the BCA BOD. “We believe that by going backto the original trade show timeframe, we will have the best opportunity to attract a larger attendance of buyers. We have alsoadjusted which days the Expo is held, to Wednesday through Friday. This change is designed to enable more buyers to attendthe Expo before heading back to their businesses for weekend sales. We have received overwhelming support for the datechange from all of the exhibitors contracted for 2010.”The BCA is pleased to report that 65 companies have already contracted for 326 booths during onsite 2010 booth selection

What is your Practice Mission?by Samm Diep

In order to get the most out of our practice time, it’s impor-tant to establish a mission. What is your purpose for practic-ing today? We’ve all observed the player from across the

room that’s just firing at balls. He thinks he’s doing the rightthing by getting out there and practicing. His practice sessionmay begin with a couple organized drills or stroke shots. Even-tually, he has lost focus or ends up playing against someone. Hegives half a warm-up stroke for each shot, tries to bank ballsthat should be cut, and is obviously no longer giving 100%. To get the most out of our practice time, there are some deci-

sions we need to make before we begin. Decide if this going tobe a learning session or an achieving session. Do you have anobjective for your valuable practice time? Have a plan to workon a specific shot or develop a certain stroke. Or, are yousetting out to run 100 balls in straight pool or break and runfour consecutive racks of 9-ball?Whichever course of action we choose, it’s most important

to make sure our goals are realistic and attainable. Now thatwe’ve determined our objective, let’s make our shot decisionsaccordingly. If we’re planning an achieving session, our goals are results-

based. This means if I’m setting out to get a perfect score of 150in the game of 6 Pocket, then I determine that before my prac-tice begins. I will choose smart patterns, take less-aggressiveshots, and make sure I get on the correct side of each ball.Ideally, I want to recreate a tournament pressure and mindsetfor myself. My priority is to accomplish this score and exceedmy current high score. On the other hand, if the plan is for a learning session, we

may find our goals to be more performance-based. For instance,I’m setting out to develop my power draw stroke. I will set upthe same shot and shoot it 50 or 100 times until I achieve mydesired outcome and get a feel for the stroke. I’m concentratingless on pocketing the ball and more on developing the musclememory. My focus is on the execution, not the results. This is also the perfect opportunity to set up that scenario I

was unsure of during league. Perhaps I used low outside insteadof high inside. I will set it up and shoot it several different ways.I’ll practice pocketing the ball with alternative spin options. Itdoesn’t matter what the results are, this is the time for learning.Establishing a practice mission has helped me maximize the

quality of my practice time. While setting out to break mystraight pool high run, I would often fall victim to unnecessar-ily shooting a shot more aggressively simply because it was“more fun” or because I felt I needed to practice that particularshot. Now, I save those shots for my learning sessions. Once I

Secretary’s DeskIt’s election time! Allmembers that are current ontheir dues will be receiving amail-in ballot to be com-pleted and returned to us.Also, current members thathave registered atwww.USBA.net will be ableto cast their ballots onlineinstead. Past elections havehad pitifully poor turnout. We are hoping that the addi-tion of the online ballot willincrease turnout. Unfortunately, although wehave gone to great lengths torecruit candidates for office,we did not get many takers. Thus, most of the candidateswill be elected uncontested. If any of you are not happyabout this or with thechoices you have been given, remember you or someoneyou know could havestepped up and run for office.I will not be endorsing anycandidates, but I will saythis: choose the candidatesthat you feel will move theUSBA forward: that arewilling to work hard; thatwill run USBA tournaments;that are open-minded; thatwill visit rooms and establishrelationships between theroom and USBA; that willteach others how to runtournaments; that are willingto give their time to answeryour questions and concerns.Don’t make it a popularitycontest. We need workers onthe board. If you wish, youcan contact the candidatesand ask them questionswhen you receive your ballot.Don’t take this decisionlightly. The USBA Boardwill be “stuck” withwhomever you elect, soplease decide wisely and inthe best interests of billiardsand the USBA.

Mazin Shooni and Cong Nguyen Qualify for 2010 Nationals

Twelve player USBA Qualifier was held at The WorldClassic Pool Event in Moody Gardens, Galveston,Texas. With 2 beautiful Gabriels billiard tables with

brand-new Simonis cloth, many spectators from the pool eventwere captivated by the “strange” game that was being played at“their” event. The game of3-cushion was exposed andmany pool players took theirturns on the tables in anattempt to defeat MazinShooni (2006 USBA Cham-pion) in a race to 3 pointsto win a Fury cue. The chal-lengers also got the breakshot. Some players did win acue, but not many. Obvi-ously, the game was a lotharder than they had antici-pated and Mazin Shooniwas a lot stronger as well. Overall, the event was a lot of funand a success for 3-cushion exposure. Also attending the event (by accident) was Erdem Kilicoglu,

a one-armed 3-cushion player from Turkey who now plays atCarom Café in Flushing, NY. Erdem has an average of atLEAST .850 and has, in the past, played over 1.000. He was at-tending the event to participate in some of the pool events. Ev-idently, he can play that too. After the Qualifier had ended, achallenge match was set up between Mazin Shooni and Erdemwhich attracted the attention of many pool players and evenFox News did a quick filming. No word of whether it will showup on TV or not. The match was not a serious one, more of afun one. Erdem came out on top.The Qualifier:With a field of 12 players including MazinShooni, the players were divided into 2 groups of 6 players each. The top 3 from each group advanced to the finals, a 6 playerround robin. Prelims were to 20 points and the finals to 25.There were 4 brand-new Vietnamese USBA members playing.Apparently, Houston has a large Vietnamese 3-cushion com-munity that has been untapped by the USBA. A USBA Tourevent will most assuredly be held next year in Houston.Flight A: Dung Nguyen wins the flight going 4-1, Joe MacNa-mara comes in 2nd going 3-2 and Paul Frankel comes in 3rdgoing 3-2. Paul won his last match against Ellis Lawrence toput him in the finals. Glen Dockstader finished 4th going 2-3,Ellis Lawrence finished 5th going 2-3 and Nguyen Nguyen fin-

ished 6th going 1-4.Flight B: Mazin Shooni lost 2 games in the prelims, one toCong Nguyen and the other to Jim Shovak. Cong Nguyen winsthe flight going 5-0, Jim Shovak finishes 2nd going 4-1 andMazin Shooni finished 3rd going 3-2. Bao Cao finishes 4thgoing 2-3, Eric Hughes finished 5th going 1-4 and Lan Lo fin-ished 6th going 0-5.Finals: After 3 rounds, Mazin Shooni, Cong Nguyen and JimShovak were all 3-0. Mazin Shooni defeated Jim Shovak 25-22to raise his record to 4-0. Then Cong Nguyen defeated JimShovak as well, 25-17 to raise his record to 4-0. This set up afinal match between Mazin and Cong to determine the winner.Mazin dominated the game from the beginning with a 14-5lead. Cong scored some points to get a little closer. ThenMazin scored more and raised his lead to 22-14. The gamelooked to be over, but it wasn’t. Cong woke up and had a beau-tiful run of 8 to tie the game at 22. All of a sudden, it was atense match. Mazin scored a point and then missed. Cong hadone last chance and missed. Mazin scored 2 and out to win thematch and the tournament. Mazin Shooni and Cong Nguyenboth qualified to play in the 2010 USBA National Champi-onship to be held in Tacoma, Washington in February.Special thanks to Mazin Shooni and Paul Frankel for giving

their time (and money) to put this event together for the ad-vancement of 3-cushion billiards. Also thanks to Wes Burden, mechanic, for driving the tables from Florida and putting themtogether, you did a great job. Also thanks to Tom and JimmyHaskin from (Cue Masters) for transporting and shipping theelectronic scoreboards and other things. Thanks for keepingscore of many matches. Thanks also to the USBA, SimonisCloth and the Galveston promoters Louis P Vickio, Clark &Bobby Rone for chipping in to help Paul and Mazin run thisevent. It would serve 3-cushion very well if we were able tocontinue to have events alongside major pool functions such asthis one.

MBC hosted an 18 player open tournament September18-20, 2009. Three flights of six played to 20 ontwo Verhoevens. The top two finishers from each ad-

vanced to Sunday’s final flight with matches to 25. Featuredguests included former American champion George Ashby, bil-liard author Bob Byrne, and USBA Secretary Jim Shovak.Players traveled from six states.Flight A. Halfway through the flight it looked possible thatBob Byrne, Fred Lamers, and Jim Shovak could all end up 4-1as each had a single loss to one another. Jim’s loss was with thefewest points so he’d be the odd man out. But then began aninteresting series of events. First Jim defeated Gary Eake toindeed finish at 4-1. Second Bernard Kapinos played his bestgame to earn his first victory which left Fred at 3-2. This putJim into the finals and it looked like Fred would be the oddman out. Next up was Bob who needed at least 18 points towrap up the second spot. Bob’s previous game was a tourna-ment best 1.250 so his chances of advancing looked good. Thiswas not to be. Craig Gullett played his best game and madeBob the odd man out. Jim won the flight at 4-1 and Fred fin-ished second at 3-2.Flight B. George Ashby went 5-0 to sweep the flight. SteveGullett, Pat Preziuso, and Carl Nelson fought for second placewith the outcome not decided until Carl beat Pat and held himbelow 15 points. Carl advanced with a record of 3-2.Flight C. John Jacobson won with a record of 4-1. Secondplace turned into a battle between Brad Vollmers, Bob Jacob-son, and Tim Gardner. Tim earned the second spot with hisvictory over John to also finish 4-1.Finals.Midway through the bracket, George was undefeatedand Jim, Fred, and John each had a single loss. John and Fred’sloss came at the hands of Carl and Tim, each shooting theirhigh game of the finals. Jim’s loss resulted from Fred’s tourna-ment high run of 11 and out. John subsequently defeated bothJim and Fred to remain with only a single loss. Fred handedGeorge his first loss with the finals high game of 1.136. Georgethen beat Jim which set up the final match between Georgeand John. The winner would take first and the loser third sinceFred had second wrapped up based on points. The match was atightly fought contest with John prevailing 25-20. with CB at Spot E andOB at Spot F, shootingtoward Pocket G.Pivot the camera onthe tripod and zoom until the frame in-cludes everything from the CB to theback of the stick, and everything fromthe player’s feet to whatever is highest.Shoot the same four-shot sequence.Review the video, observing closely.

The first eight shots should be perfectlyaligned to the camera and Laser Line 1.

Check to ensure yourentire stroke arm isaligned vertically tothe Laser Line – notilting, no tucking theelbow in or winging itout. No wrist curls.Where is your tip? Is iton the vertical axis ofthe CB? Where doesyour tip finish? Does it

follow through the CB adequately? Doesit veer off the line? Is your stick pointedperfectly down the Laser Line? Look atthe donut at Spot X when shootingtoward the camera. The stick should hidethe donut; otherwise, it is not pointedstraight down the line. When shootingthe other direction, watch to make surethe donut on the butt of the stick isaligned directly above Spot Y.

Check out your approach to the shot, your ball address, practice strokes, eyemovements, elbow dips, swerves, stance, balance, stability, bridge, smoothness, confidence, hit stroke, and follow-through/finish. Slow motion viewing canbe very insightful.

Warning: What you witness may not bepretty. You’ll probably see things that willsurprise you – and motivate you to come topool school.

Shoot Yourselfby Tom Simpson • PoolClinics.com

Contributing Writer

At pool school, one of the firstand most important analyticaltools we use is the video

camera. Each player shoots a standard se-quence of four shots, viewed from threedifferent angles: from the front, from theback, and from the side. Often, playersask whether they can get a copy of theirvideo. We chuckle and explain that, afterthey’ve been through a day of bridge, grip, stance, alignment, and stroke train-ing, and then see their “before” video, they will be offering to bribe us to recordover it. Most of us have burned-in a lotof our fundamentals. Video shows thetruth. Regardless of how “correct ornatural” you may feel at the table, youmay be shocked at what you actually looklike and what you actually are doing. Youmay want to shoot yourself.Let’s look at how to set up and shoot a

“fundamentals” video. You’ll need avideo camera, tripod, pooltable, laser, and some“donuts” (the little whitedonut-shaped hole rein-forcers sold at office supply stores). It alsohelps to have an assistant to run thecamera while you’re shooting.First, we’ll need to establish a perfectly

straight line between the effectivecenters of two corner pockets, shown onthe diagram below as Laser Line 1. Thatline runs through the intersections of therail gutters (the wear lines a half-ball outfrom each cushion nose) at cornerpockets A and D. Use those points toalign the laser. Stick donuts on the clothat Spots B and C. Set up the cameraabout 10 feet back from the table, if pos-sible. Align the camera’s lens with thesame laser line. Adjust the tripod so thecamera is about a foot higher than thetable surface. We also place donuts over the lip of

the pocket lining of the far corner pocket

(Spot X) and on the outside of the table(Spot Y), below the pocket, where thecamera can still see it below the stickwhen the player is shooting down theline. And of course, these donuts are alsoon Laser Line 1. Use the laser to set up Laser Line 2,

dead center between the corner and sidepocket, as shown. Stick donuts at Spots Eand F. This layout is for right-handers.Flip it for lefties.Stick a donut to the rubber bumper on

the bottom of your cue, to helpmake it visible on camera.Place a cueball on Spot B and object

ball on Spot C. Have the player get inposition to shoot this shot down LaserLine 1 toward the camera, into Pocket D.Zoom in or out until the frame containsthe bottom of the CB to the top of theplayer (elbow point or top of head, whichever is higher). Now you’re readyto shoot the first four shots. Record theplayer shooting this shot four differentways: 1) stop shot, 2) draw to center oftable, 3) follow forward to the pocket, 4)maximum draw, back toward or into thecorner pocket. Now, reverse the CB and OB so that

the shot is toward Pocket A, with thecamera behind the player. Zoom out toinclude the top of the player and if possi-ble, all the way down to the feet. Shootthe same four shots as above.Set up the side pocket shot as shown,

In Memory of Ray DesellBy Tom McGonagle69 • Died 8/9/ 2009Reading his obituary, you really wouldn’tknow much about the real Ray Desell. Itstates, “Ray was born in Lawrence and livedthere all his life. He was a siding contractorand active member of card playing leagues,at the Colonial Lounge, in Lawrence, wherehe worked, along with being a member of alocal V.F. W. Then they mention he was an avid pool and billiard player. To say the least, Ray was more than an avid about these games, he was ob-sessed. I wrote an article in the All About Pool Magazine. It was aboutstarting a Pool and Billiard, Hall of Fame in New England. Ray read thearticle and called me. He asked, “Hey captain,” his pet name for me was,Captain Crash. It was the way, I broke, that brought this on. “Are youserious, do you really want to do this?” I said, I did, and he asked if hecould do something to help. I told him, “I’ll take all the help I can get.” Ifigured I was dealing with another of the many people I had come across, inmy life, promise you everything, and do nothing, to help. “MIngua,” oneof Ray’s favorite expressions, was I wrong, about Ray. He not only tookthe ball he ran with it for miles. He gathered and stored information, betterthan most computers. He gathered information, on players, from way backwhen and found living relatives of these people and invited them all to NewBedford, Ma. for the induction ceremony. Ray made the lives of thesepeople, so much richer, I wish you could have seen the look on their facesas we presented their plaques to them. It was priceless. The bottom line is Ray is the New England Pool and Billiard Hall of Fame. The rest of us are just figure heads. He did most of the work. I miss himtremendously.Ray always cherished the thought of receiving the Sy andDolly award. It was given to the person we felt did the most to helppromote the game. The award will now be the Ray Desell and Sy andDolly award. It is my pleasure, to let the world know, Ray is the winner of the first, suchaward. God bless, Ray DeSell

All of my systems have a standardized {HIT} system. There are twelve {Hits} These hits, meaning howmuch object ball is hit by the cue ball, are numbered

0 through 12. 12 being the full ball. Numbers 3, 6, and 9 areone quarter, one half and three quarters respectfully. The “Hit“values never change and can be used for every shot on thetable. The system tells you what hit to use. This system segment is called The Ten System SegmentIt will require you to learn Diamond angles and Cue Ball /

Object Ball angles, but it is really worth your time since a greatnumber of shots can be made with this knowledge. The graph shows that one corner is 10 the middle of the end

rail is 9 and the other corner is 8. These are 4 to 5 rail shotsstarting with the end rail you wish to return too.The graph shows you one of the shot patterns. See article 41

and 42 in Professor Q Ball’s last two editions for two more pat-terns. Check the cue ball/object ball angle then subtract thatnumber from the number you wish to hit on the fifth rail. This would be 10 minus 4 = 6 the cut that number in half

and make that hit. The hit is a three hit or one quarter of theD.P.M. Universal Billiard Systems for Carom Billiards

object ball is hit by the cue ball. The graph shows how much one tip of spin English can

affect the shot. You can go from one corner to the other simplyby adding one tip of spin English. There is much more to this system but you now have a

working knowledge to experiment on your own.Next Article I will show you how to play the shot from the

other side of the object ball. Some good practice on your partand you will be making this type of shot like Dick Jaspers.
