Research: Main research interest is on thermo-mechanical metamaterials in particular systems with negative mechanical or thermal properties. These include system with a negative Poisson's ratios (auxetic), i.e. materials and structures which become wider when stretched and thinner when compressed; systems with a negative thermal expansion coefficient (NTE), i.e. systems which get smaller when heated and expand when cooled, and systems exhibiting negative compressibility, i.e. systems which expand rather than contract when subjected to an increase in the external hydrostatic pressure. The research entails the modelling and simulation of the mechanical and thermal properties of materials in an attempt to discover or design materials with these unusual properties. Several new auxetic nano/micro/macrostructures have been invented and explored in detail. Particularly interesting results include the discovery of negative Poisson’s ratios in the zeolite class of materials, the design of various networked polymeric auxetics and, the development of models for predicting the mechanical properties of auxetic foams and of microporous polymers. These discoveries have some very important technical implications (e.g. the discovery of negative Poisson’s ratios in zeolites opens many new possibilities towards the use of zeolites as tuneable filters). Other work includes experimental work which resulted in a new manufacture method for making auxetic foams, studies on structures exhibiting anomalous behaviour when subjected to temperature or pressure changes and the discovery of a new reversible method for the manufacture of auxetic foams through a chemo-mechanical process. Research in this field has led to the publication of scientific articles in leading journals such as Proc. Roy. Soc. A, J. Applied Physics, Chemical Communications, Journal of Materials Chemistry, Advanced Materials and Acta & Scripta Materialia (Full list below.) The work has been nationally and internationally recognised:

more than a hundred attending participants to Malta from various countries including Belgium, Belarus, Brazil, China, Italy, Japan, Korea, Malta, Poland, Russia, UK, and USA.

o Received invitations to present papers at leading international conferences, seminars for various leading European companies and universities (e.g. Henkel KGaA, Germany, UCL & University of Cambridge, UK) as detailed below;

o Participant in a major EU FP6 funded project (CHISMACOMB – Total value of the project: 3 million Euros; University of Malta component: approx. € 250,000) and various major nationally funded projects;

Also appointed by the Council of the University of Malta as the Co-ordinator of the Metamaterials Unit, an independent Unit set up in 2010 operating directly under the auspices of the Faculty of Science. This Unit hosts the research group on Auxetics and Related Systems, which group was set up with my appointment with the University of Malta and is now one of the leading international teams working in this field. The group currently comprises of two Research Assistants and a number of undergraduate and post-graduate students (MSc / PhD).
