Completed Product
After approval of final document by Graduate School

– the permission form will be returned to you via email attachment.
You will be approved to submit to BEARdocs (you cannot do so until you are approved)
– Enter only the approved dissertation/thesis and the permission form into one submission.
– The signed signature page is for your files or to use in bound copies if you wish.
Fees
Traditional Publishing fee to UMI:
– Required for dissertation students ($65)
– Paid by credit card at the time of submission to UMI
– Optional for master’s students ($55)

• Come to a Formatting 911 session if you are having trouble or have questions
Let Word do the work for you
• Show/Hide Codes
• Set Tabs (Format / Tabs)
• Return only at the end of a paragraph
• Try AutoText for some of your discipline-specific words and phrases
Margins
• File / Page Setup
• Where to put them- Bottom
- Centered- Top of number .75” from bottom edge- Headers and footers should be set at .60”
or .65”(File / Page Setup / Layout Tab)
Page Numbers
How to set them
– View Header and Footer toolbar
– Then you can insert the page numbers
• Do NOT use Insert/Page Numbers, you will get
frames which can be put anywhere. YOU DON’T
WANT THIS!
– For the roman numerals in the preliminary
front pages, choose Format Page Number on
the Header/Footer Toolbar
Landscape Page Numbers
– Insert a text box and type in the page number
– Turn the text by using Format / Text direction
– Then set the properties of the text box as follows. This
will place the page number in the proper position for
the margins.
Triple Spacing
• Where:
- Above the third, fourth, & fifth levels
• How:
- Format/Paragraph
- 12 points above
Format Painter
Format a paragraph the way you want it.
Keep insertion point in paragraph.
Select the format painter icon
(paint brush)
Click on the paragraph(s) you want
formatted like the first one.
Select through the paragraph marker
Footnotes
Bottom of page in most cases, but...
Right below text on last page of the chapter
– Insert/Reference / Footnote/Options
– Beneath Text
• This is also where you can change your
footnote separator or remove it
altogether.

Logon to BEARdocs with Bear ID and
password
Select Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Collection – not available, contact Mrs.
Harman
Minimum of 2 documents to submit:
– Permission form
– Thesis/dissertation
Common Issues
Complete all metadata as defined on
―Submitting to BEARdocs‖ document
Subjects – 5-10 major topics; don’t
duplicate language
Use ―Add Another‖ button when
appropriate
Note the 60-second delay before submitting
2nd (or additional) documents
Workflow Process
Submission reviewed by Mrs. Harman and
library staff– Rejected by library staff if permissions and/or
copyright forms not available
– Rejected by Mrs. Harman if she finds a problem
Once approved, library staff completes
cataloging process
Once approved by catalogers, formally
archives in BEARdocs and accessible
Conclusion of Process
Under most circumstances, appears in
BEARdocs 2-3 months after graduation.
Once formally archived, an e-mail message
is sent to your Baylor e-mail account
Once accessible in BEARdocs, ―findable‖
via Google. . . and people do find them and
want to view them!!
