Sept. 5, 1957 — Miss Jaycees, Sherlynn Schlofeldt, was crowned “Miss Tracy for 1958” at the impressive coronation ceremonies which climaxed the 1957 Tracy Box Car Days in the Tracy City Park Monday night. Her princess for 1958 was Cynthia Thomas, Miss National Guard. The pert blonde queen, 17-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Otto Schlofeldt of Garvin, and senior at Tracy high school, was in tears and nearly speechless after the tense moments when emcee Jim Cain and Queen Connie Silver strolled back and forth before the array of candidates, and suddenly stopped at her chair.

A delegation of about 15 men from Tracy attended the hearing at Lamberton y e s t e r d a y ( We d n e s d a y ) concerning discontinuance of C&NW trains 514 and 515. The local delegation was comprised of representatives of the Tracy C&C, Kiwanis, retired railroad expressmen, expressmen who will be affected by droppage of the trains and retired rail postal workers. Attorney Charles Buzzell appeared as legal spokesman for the group.

Sept. 7, 1967 — Larry Johnson, 19, of Slayton died of injuries and two of his young companions were hospitalized here along with the driver of the other car, Mrs. Louise Fischer and three children of Currie, in a head on crash six and one-half miles south of Tracy at 4:30 Sunday afternoon. Johnson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clinton Johnson of Slayton but until recently residents of Currie, suffered a crushed head and died in the local hospital at 10 p.m. Sunday night. Mrs. Fischer and her children, twins Sandra and Scott, 9, and Laurie, 5, were headed south on Murray County Road 38 near the Clyde Robbins farm when the accident occurred. Occupants of the car with Johnson were Michael Galvin, 18, of Currie, and Gerald Leonard, 18, of Glenwood but formerly of Currie. The Leonard car was headed north, went out of control and then fishtailed before it crashed with the Fischer vehicle and ended up in the ditch.

Sept. 8, 1977 — The 50th Annual Box Cur Days was a complete success, with an estimated 15,000 to 20,000 people on hand for the big Labor Day parade and another 1,000 or so watching Monday night as Vikki Schaar was crowned the new Miss Tracy for 1978 and Patti Hook the new Princess. The weekend didn’t start out quite as nicely as it finished however. In fact, last Friday, it looked very bleak for the Tracy Area Chamber of Commerce, the Tracy Jaycees and the other community and civic organizations preparing for the annual event. But Saturday, after a dark and cloudy morning, the sun began to burn brighter and the hopes of thousands of a fun-filled successful Labor Day weekend began to grow stronger.

Sept. 9, 1987 — Candy Sanderson was named the new Tracy Jr. Miss Sunday before a large crowd at the THS gymnasium. The daughter of Darrell and Joyce Sanderson, Candy will receive a record $1,000 scholarship from the program committee. Tonja West was the first runner-up and received a $225 scholarship.

The federal budget deficit will be the most urgent problem confronting Congress this fall, congressman Vin Weber told a gathering in Tracy last week. “Deficit reduction is probably the biggest problem,” Weber said. “Almost everyone agrees something has to be done. But there is a huge gulf between the budget Congress wants and what the president wants.”

Sept. 10, 1997 — A $20 million construction project is underway in Custer Township, a mile northwest of Garvin. Northern Border Pipeline Company is building a new 35,000 horsepower compressor station on a 25-acre site one mile west of and a half mile south of Garvin Corner. The Lyon County compressor station is part of an

$837 million Northern Border Pipeline project designed to increase the capacity of its natural gas pipeline.

Five people are seeking three seats on the Tracy City Council this Fall. Filing for office Monday and Tuesday were: Brad Nelson, Darold Goettig and incumbent Jack Schaefer. They join incumbents Mike Fraser and Marv Rialson, who filed for re-election earlier. Both Nelson and Goettig also ran for council last year. Nelson was elected to office, but later declined the seat after accepting a job in Sioux Falls. Schaefer, as the next highest vote getter, was appointed to fill the vacancy. The council vacancies will be determined in the Nov. 4 general election.

Obituaries: Irene Youngs, Minnie Lang, Roger Kerr, Ardis Terry

Sept. 5, 2007 — Vernon Grinde made a career out of knowing what was going on at “his” schools. But at a Tracy Elementary School open house Sunday afternoon, the retired principal was as surprised as a rookie teacher supervising his first school lunch. Grinde was stunned, but thrilled, as a sign was unveiled for “Grinde’s Grand Playground.” “I knew absolutely nothing about this,” he said later. “I got teary eyed.”

Maria Schmidt was named Miss Tracy for 2008 Sunday. Jasmine Lavoie became Miss Tracy First Runner-up, while Chantelle Cooreman was named Miss Tracy Second Runner-up.

Planning for Tracy Kid’s World continues on two fronts: construction and financial. Architects and engineers are finalizing plans and specifications so that the project can be put out for bids in mid-September. It is hoped that bid proposals can be opened in late September or early October, a contract awarded in October, and construction begin yet this fall. The $1.9 million day care and preschool facility is targeted for an August, 2008 opening.

Kayla Daniels of Tracy took top honors Friday in the first-ever Box Car Day Idol contest. The Tracy Area High School ninth grader was one of 12 finalists who competed for the title. The finalists were selected in three rounds of competition this summer. Daniels won $300.
