This course covers the fundamentals of nutrition, including the macronutrients and micronutrients, and the fundamentals of how food is used by the human body. Students will be able to identify healthy food sources for the various nutrients and decipher reliable and unreliable nutritional information.

This course provides the foundations of medical terminology, including roots, the formation of medical terms, and the common medical terms used in describing the body and the personal training industry.

EXS-101 — Medical Terminology

This course covers the fundamentals of conducting health screenings and risk stratifications, as well as tests such as body fat, cardiovascular condition, and flexibility.

EXS-104 — Fitness Screening and Testing 3.0 credits

This course will help you to understand the physics and mechanism of human movement so you can design, monitor, analyze and adjust exercises for your clients. You'll have a gentle introduction to the mathematics and physics of human movement, targeted specifically at the end result: safe, effective and quality exercise programs. You will learn how muscles and bones comprise a system of forces and levers to move the body in certain patterns. Special emphasis is placed on arthrokinematics of the body—the movement of joints and osteokinematics – the movement of bones.

This course provides students with the basic skills needed to instruct group training sessions. Students will learn how to set up programs and instruct sessions for small group training in a variety of settings.

This course is an introduction to the motivation behind behavior change as it relates to physical activity behaviors. Topics include goal setting, motivating clients, developing an action plan, and communication strategies needed to inspire and sustain long-term healthy habits.

This course covers the fundamentals of performance-oriented training, and the role of cardiovascular training in reaching performance-oriented goals. Prerequisite: EXS-103

This course introduces students to the roles of myofascial tissues and anatomy trains in the body. Special focus is given to the interconnectivity of various tissues, and the importance of assessing the body as a whole to make a lasting change. Prerequisites: EXS-299

A course that presents an integrated view of biomechanics. Topics include tensegrity and the implications of functional biomechanics in exercise and movement. Prerequisites: HFT-300

This course covers fitness assessment and testing techniques. Topics include review of physiological measurements, performance tests, and test selection and interpretation.

HFT-302 — Applied Fitness Assessment Techniques 3.0 credits

A course focused on the interpretation of cardiovascular assessments to create programs for various populations. Topics include needs analysis, exercise selection and order, and training frequency.

HFT-303 — Advanced Exercise Prescription for Cardiorespiratory Training 3.0 credits

A course focused on the interpretation of strength and endurance assessments to create programs for various populations. Topics include needs analysis, exercise selection and order, and training frequency.

HFT-304 — Advanced Exercise Prescription for Flexibility

A course focused on the interpretation of flexibility assessments to create programs for various populations. Topics include needs analysis and the art of using stretch techniques.

HFT-305 — Advanced Exercise Prescription for Flexibility

This course focuses on knowledge and training concepts that are unique to training older adults and youth. Topics related to training older adults include assessing fitness levels, designing fitness programs, and providing motivating exercise. The practical realities of working with youth, socialization of play, and providing motivating exercise that is dominated by movement will also be addressed.

A course focused on a key driver of success as a personal trainer: gaining and retaining clients. This course addresses engaging clients in your facility and generating goal-oriented value to retain your clients. New and unique ways of looking at prospecting and retention are discussed.

HFT-400 — Gaining and Retaining Clients 3.0 credits

This course is focused on a variety of corrective exercise screenings and strategies. Topics in this course include gait analysis, muscle imbalances, movement efficiency, and injury prevention. Prerequisites: HFT-302

HFT-401 — Corrective Impairment Strategies I 3.0 credits

This course focuses specifically on functional movement screening. Students will be able to identify risk factors associated with movement-based activities and develop corrective strategies based on screening scores. Prerequisites: HFT-302
