Dear Colleagues,Welcome to Fall 2020; a semester unlike any other in the history of TMCC. I am proud and appreciative of all of our collective efforts as we move forward during this difficult pandemic and virtual new reality.

Last year’s keynote speaker, Dr. Angie Taylor, gave us her powerful message related to purpose. As an extension of that theme, let’s reflect this year on how we can help our students find their purpose at TMCC. Let’s help them find that purposeful motivation too, so that it carries them all the way to the completion of their professional and personal goals. And how can we, as skilled educators, do this with TMCC students during these vulnerable COVID times? That is the challenge of the Academic Year 2020-2021. I ask that we reflect upon this challenge, and continue to work together with all of our collective might and imagination so that the important and transformative work of TMCC is not deterred.

The incredible work you have done over the summer to get ready for the new academic year is a testament to who we really are at TMCC. WebCollege and the Professional Development Office have worked as a team to offer you creative and practical workshops that help you successfully teach online and promote student engagement. I especially thank the faculty members who shared their best practices and successful techniques for student engagement in the Solution Sessions with their colleagues.

Information and strategies to support you and your students will continue to be offered during the Fall 2020 Professional Development Days. All sessions will be offered online. Several highlights of these offerings will be Dr. John Adlish sharing his personal journey through COVID-19 on August 19 and providing you with reliable and up to date information on the disease. Another session of interest is the workshop on Understanding Grief and Loss and how you can support yourself, your students and others will be offered by counselor Kristen DeMay on August 19. And on August 20, Marynia Giren Navarro will offer insights on how you can transcend technology and Stay Human in Online Learning.

We continue to be “In It Together” at TMCC!

Sincerely,

Dr. Karin M. Hilgersom, President

Have You Thought About Apprenticeship for Your Program?Online via Zoom: https://zoom.us/j/96208397578

An increasing number of TMCC programs require or encourage internships, placing students in temporary work settings to gain valuable experiential and applied learning. A recent federal regulation has opened the doors for apprenticeships to extend beyond the building trades and other traditional areas. Now, almost any program on campus can consider developing an apprenticeship program, which benefits students with debt-free education while they also build real-time work experience. An apprenticeship student is hired as a permanent employee under an agreement to complete college courses and on-the-job training to reach the expected level of competence. The employer funds the college courses identified to support the student’s development and provides mentoring on the job. Upon completion of the apprenticeship program, the student-apprentice receives a pay increase to that of an experienced incumbent and earns a business-industry recognized Certificate of Apprenticeship. This session will inform you about this opportunity and how to get your program involved.Krista Johns, project manager, Nevada’s apprenticeship project, TMCC applied technologies

Faculty for Radical Enlightenment and Empowerment (F.R.E.E.) is TMCC’s longest running interdisciplinary learning community, going strong since 2003. F.R.E.E. is dedicated to campus-wide sensory-based social-emotional student-centered learning and creativity. We welcome you to participate in our fall 2020 physically distanced event: “A Brave New World,” a collaborative chalk mural on the Dandini Quad Circle (between the Child Care Center and the Student Center) wherein students and staff will relay one-at-a-time to chalk-illustrate in a designated grid square interpretations of the Brave New World we find ourselves in relationship to fall coursework. This event is scheduled to take place in October with the goal of connecting our diverse students into a sense of belongingness and humanization despite the global crisis. Please join this meeting to find out more about how to link your established course content into this sensory-based project, how to invite your students into it, and help contribute your creative ideas and logistics to F.R.E.E.Track: Teaching Strategies, Student Engagement, Diversity & Inclusion
