21st Century Learning in the Classroom

A customized series of trainings in a variety of emerging technologies and best instructional practices. Participating districts choose four web 2.0 tools from an extensive list of emerging technologies. Participants attend a total of five online sessions delivered via Elluminate. The first session is a video tutorial regarding the use of Elluminate. The remaining four sessions are dedicated to professional development on the effective integration of selected technologies into the learning process. Audience: District Teams or individual K – 12 teachers and administrators Department: C&I/Ed. Tech

Archipelago Training

Training sessions on the suite of Archipelago products including Study Island for Middle and High School, Reading Eggs and Education City. The Archipelago Training series offers sessions for beginners and advanced users as well as sessions focused on the administration of the products in school buildings and/or districts. Building an Asynchronous Professional Network

Explore the online tools available to administrators to assist in making connections and building relationships with people you may never get a chance to meet face to face. People who can help guide your learning, help to answer questions or solve problems, provide professional development opportunities and give advice. Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI)

Nonviolent Crisis Intervention is a safe, non-harmful behavior management system designed to aid human service professionals in the management of disruptive and assaultive people, even during the most violent moments. This workshop will focus on crisis development, nonverbal behaviors, verbal interventions, precipitation factors, rational detachments, staff fear and anxiety, personal safety, and post-intervention strategies. CTELL Math & Science Overview Workshop

This one-day introduction to LoTi and HEAT will give administrators, coaches and teacher-leaders an overview of the core ideals of the LoTi School Improvement Model. Audience: administrators Department: C&I/Ed. Tech

Models of Administrative Evaluation of Online Teaching

This workshop demonstrates how to evaluate the materials and teaching in online courses. Topics covered will include similarities with evaluation of face-to-face teaching, factors unique to online courses, technological considerations, helping administrators unfamiliar with online courses, and national standards, rubrics, and benchmarks. Together we will seek to define the best practices for online instruction, and to extrapolate the questions administrators can ask in evaluating their instructor's performance in online learning. In addition, this workshop will outline specific examples of measurable instructor behaviors that point to competence in online teaching. Audience: K – 12 administrators Department: C&I/Ed. Tech

OT Classroom Strategies for the IA

Activities for Instructional Assistants to facilitate and enhance fine motor and functional skills for their students within the educational environment. Audience: paraeducators Department: Special Programs

PA Common Core

This session will recommend practices that administrators can use to support their teachers’ efforts to implement the PACCSS. Specific recommendations will be provided regarding instructional shifts and curriculum alignment. Additional emphasis will be placed on the need for teachers to utilize different instructional strategies so that students can access the rigorous curriculum prescribed by the PACCSS. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of the PACCSS and how educational practices need to evolve in order to ensure that all students acquire the skills necessary for college and career readiness. Pieces of the Puzzle: Working with Students with Traumatic Brain Injury

Presented by members of the CLIU Brain STEPS team, this session will inform participants of the complex range of brain injury and the most effective academic and behavioral accommodations. Classroom Management

Positive Reinforcement: Adding this powerful tool for teaching to your classroom management will promote both positive behaviors and support your student's academic skills. Teachers and support staff will look at positive classroom management and learn ways to reinforce positive behavior and learning in your classroom. PVAAS Introduction

This half-day session is designed to provide participants with a basic overview of the PVAAS reporting specific to targeted grade levels and subject areas. Participants will “look forward” with PVAAS projections (projection methodology) and “look back” at PVAAS value-added reporting available to districts and public schools across the Commonwealth. These sessions will focus on the key concepts and competencies as they apply to the meaningful use of PVAAS reporting in local districts and schools. Audience: K –12 teachers and administrators Department: C&I/Ed. Tech

PVAAS Protocols for Principals and Teachers

This full day session is designed for school teams who already have an understanding of PVAAS. The day will be divided into three parts:

Focus I: Assessing School Effectiveness – A Protocol for Teachers and Principals Review a technique to communicate how PVAAS measures growth for schools/districts. Develop a profile of your school’s effectiveness in tested grades and subjects.

Focus II: Are Your School’s Programs Matched to the Needs of Your Students? Identify students in need of additional intervention and/or enrichment. Describe the reliability of the PVAAS projections as a tool for universal screening.

Focus III: Using Evidence of Past Effectiveness to Inform Current Instructional Needs Interpret PVAAS student level reporting as a means to inform instructional planning. Assess grade level effectiveness in meeting the needs of students at particular achievement levels (by subject) to determine the potential impact on the performance of current student. Teacher Effectiveness Training

Participants will learn how their thinking about good teaching compares to the research about good teaching as related to the "Framework for Teaching." Implementation stages for Phase 2 including announced & unannounced observations. Audience: administrators Department: Human Resources/C&I/Ed. Tec

Technology Tools To Help Eliminate The Waste In Your Classroom Do you ever wish that you didn't have an overflowing bin of paper at the end of the day (or even before lunch)? There are many ways that you and your students and teachers can be using technology to eliminate the wasteful paper and save our environment. In this session, we will look at ways to use Microsoft Office to edit and grade essays, create fill in the blank worksheets, and utilize other tools that will eliminate the need for printing as students will be able to send documents and homework directly to your e-mail. We will discuss file management to keep you from going crazy with all the new e-mails you will be receiving. We will also spend time exploring Google Docs in comparison to the Microsoft Office Suite in ways to use the Google Docs to collaborate, share, and eliminate the unnecessary waste. The Role of Gifted and Other Specialists

This session will provide up-to-date information about Chapter 16 regulations, how to be prepared for compliance monitoring, and how administrators can most effectively support the work of teachers of gifted and other specialists. Additional information will be provided regarding best practices in both GIEP writing and decision making surrounding acceleration and enrichment. Audience: K – 12 administrators Department: C&I/Ed. Twitter for Teachers

It is amazing how much can be accomplished in just 140 characters. This workshop will introduce teachers to the social networking tool known as Twitter. They will explore ways to use Twitter as a tool for professional development and/or communication with students and parents. They will also learn about the various methods of managing Twitter accounts. Audience: K - 12 teachers Department: C&I/Ed. Tech

Understanding Students with Aspergers

The incidence of Aspergers is greatly increasing, therefore many teachers need to understand the complexities of the disorder. In this training, we will review the characteristics of the disorder as well as the mental health issues that often co-exist in these students. We will also show you how to use strategies such as Social Stories in the classroom to help the student with Asperger's be more successful. Audience: all educators Department: Special Programs

Virtual Mentoring

The virtual mentor plays a critical role in helping students feel comfortable in the online environment and also works closely with the online instructor to address the specific learning needs of their students. This workshop includes an introduction to the virtual course environment, an overview to the diverse learning needs of the online student, and training in the skills and techniques needed to effectively support students participating in online courses. Virtual Teaching for Beginners

Teaching in an online environment can often prove to be a daunting task. From the facilitation of higher order thinking skills within discussion boards to the task of authentic assessment, there are many details to consider. This workshop will help teachers explore the skills needed to be successful teachers in an online environment. Tools, resources, and best practices will be shared during this full day session. ADHD: An Educator's Guide This three credit graduate level course is designed for teachers from grades K-12. The participant will be provided with an in-depth exploration of Attention-Deficit/ Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Emphasis will be placed on the educational implications of research of information, techniques, and strategies to help students with this disorder increase their academic success in meeting the Pennsylvania Academic Standards and perform well on state and local assessments. Examples, case studies, guidelines, and practical tips from experienced teachers will be reviewed to explore the connections between knowledge and practice. This is an online Moodle class, and each session contains a series of lessons, videos, written responses, and other activities. F/W/S

American Government: An Educator's Guide This on-line graduate level course is designed to provide educators with an in-depth exploration of American Government and how they can use this knowledge not only when teaching social studies, but to implement cross-curricular lessons in all subject areas consistent with the Pennsylvania Academic Standards to increase students' scores on state and local assessments, mainly the PSSAs. The instructor will present the material via Moodle through lectures, discussion boards, and a review of current historical and educational research. W/S

An Educator's Guide to Managing and Solving Discipline Problems This three credit graduate level course is designed for teachers from grades K-12. The participant will be introduced to fourteen different types of behaviors commonly exhibited by difficult to manage students. Descriptions, underlying causes, common traps, and strategies will be presented and discussed in detail for each type of behavior. The Procedural Framework for School-Wide Effective Behavior will be analyzed and discussed,

specifically in relation to its focus on designing and implementing proactive school-wide behavior support systems for all children. This is an online Moodle class, and each session contains a series of lessons,

An Introduction to Special Education and Exceptional Learners This three credit graduate course is designed for teachers from grades K-12. This is an online Moodle class, and each session contains a series of lessons, video, written response, and other activities. This course will provide educators with an in-depth exploration of the special education system and challenges that students with special needs will face when included in the regular education classroom and strategies that will maximize student performance and enable them to better meet the Pennsylvania Academic Standards and perform well on state and local assessments. Assessment and Support for English Language Learners A 45 hr course designed to provide specific knowledge specified by the PA Dept of Instruction in its requirements for ESL training. Specifically, the course will address part 3: ELL Language and Support Services Knowledge. It is designed to expand participants' knowledge of effective available for ELL students. In addition to effective assessment practices, purposes for assessment, multiple assessment models, use of evaluation techniques, scaffolding of assessment & formal/informal assessment tools will be discussed. Participants will learn the availability of school support services to assist ELLs in language acquisition and content learning and ways to promote parental/family involvement. W Beginning Sign Language This Beginning Sign Language course will provide an introduction to the signed alphabet and basic sign language. New vocabulary and language patterns will be provided for expressive and receptive practice. Upon completion of this course, students will be able to communicate in a limited degree with the hearing-impaired population-using finger spelling, signing, and gesturing. W

Books Alive

This course is especially designed for teachers instructing students in grades pre-school through grade 8. The focus of the class will be to create a setting that motivates both the teacher and the students to become "marinated" in good books. Each participant will develop an ABC book or Readers_ Theatre script. Over 30 graphic organizers will be presented for extending reading and writing activities along with literature artifacts, book vests, songs, book teasers, story cubes, class books, shadow boxes, and student-made literary filmstrips. The activities will be tied into the PA Academic Standards for Reading, Writing, Speaking, and Listening. F

A major focus of the course will center on developing lessons and activities that incorporate all seven intelligences.
