he Verbatim® Gatewayfrom RACO, the remote monitoringand alarm specialists, allows you touse TouchTone telephones anywhereas interactive, multi-functionaloperator interfaces. It’s a uniquebreakthrough that provides con-venient, inexpensive bidirectionalcommunication with your PLC net-work via dial-up phone lines. Soyou can call in and check the statusof any channel. Modify alarm criteriaand monitoring points. Alter processvariables and setpoints. So you canbe called and receive clear voice-message reports of alarm situations,with messages directed sequentiallyto as many as 16 phone numbers.

In a single, compact, ruggedlybuilt system, the Verbatim Gatewaydelivers these important functionsand more. And it does so withoutrequiring the use of PLC outputs ormodification of PLC controlprograms.

Extended functionality andversatility — at minimal cost.

Continuous real-time communica-tion between the Verbatim Gatewayand the PLC network is performedvia a serial link using the protocolssupported by specific PLC models.Any PLC’s I/O points and data tablelocations can be manually altered. Inaddition, the system provides auto-matic monitoring of as many as 96points — points reflecting any combi-nation of discrete, analog, timer,counter, or other PLC data objects.

Further, the Verbatim Gatewayuses only a single cable connection,to deliver its extensive functionality.You avoid the burdensome costs ofcomplex wiring, additional PLCoutputs and relays. You add monitor-ing points at costs that are about40% less than those associated withtraditional PLC-to-input configura-tions. As a result, you’re able to fullyutilize the potential of your PLCs —easily and inexpensively.

The Verbatim Gateway is de-signed for use with popular networkprotocols — including the ModiconModbus Plus™, Modbus® RTU andthe Allen Bradley DH485. Operatingat selectable communication speedsup to 1 Mbaud, it’s even capable ofsimultaneously monitoring PLCs onnetworks using different protocols.And all protocol-specific error-detection techniques and retrans-mission methods are fully main-tained. You can also use the VerbatimGateway as a bridge between incom-patible networks, so that data canbe exchanged between them.

Accessing any of the 96 pointswhich are automatically controlledby the Verbatim Gateway requiresonly a brief 4-digit sequence. Userscan quickly perform functions thatrange from ordinary status-checkingand message recording/review/revision to reading/writing of dataregisters at any network addressand selection of global commandsapplying to all channels. Responsesare always in voice format; dataregister numeric codes, for example,are converted to spoken voice mes-sages. If a programming sequenceis not recognized by the VerbatimGateway or if an invalid parameteris entered, the system responds withthe appropriate voice message.

The clear voice guidancesimplifies entry of dial-out phonenumbers, recording of alarm mes-sages and setting of trip delays. Thesystem’s preprogrammed operatingparameters streamline set-up, yetthey may be easily altered to meetspecific needs.

The Verbatim Gateway makescertain no alarm condition goesunheeded or unacknowledged.

When an alarm condition occurs,the Verbatim Gateway automaticallydials up to 16 field-programmablephone numbers — numbers having asmany as 60 digits each. The systemthen reports the station indenfica-tion and the specific alarm condition.
