Terra Vacuum CleanerbyYasemin Ulukan & Senur Design Center

    DESIGN NAME:

    Terra

    PRIMARY FUNCTION:

    Vacuum Cleaner

INSPIRATION:The main idea was to create a powerful, low noise vacuum cleaner with strong look and honest

design language. Researches show that buttons on the vacuum cleaners are pressed by foot.

Although the buttons are designed for manual pressing, the users are commanding the vacuum

cleaner with their feet due to ergonomic reasons. All buttons on Terra are designed big-sized,

thereby give the impression of pedals rather than buttons so that the user can immediately

perceive that they can be pressed by foot.

    UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

Terra is a vacuum cleaner equipped with a helix formed, specially insulated air chamber that

increases suction performance meanwhile minimizing the sound. Thereby presents low energy

consumption-high suction power-minimum sound features all together and in a perfect manner.

With its strong and tough outlook, each detail on Terra contributes to its aesthetic appearance.

Power control lights, dust bag indicator, HEPA filter full indicator details placed on the main frameprovides a more distinguished tone to the product. Furthermore, the hubcaps placed on the

wheels, provide a more dynamic outlook to Terra. The ergonomic handle whereon on/off and

power controls can be made with a single finger stroke is awaiting to receive a patent being

differentiated among its competitors with its formwork and manufacturing process.

    OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:

All the details of Terra have been designed as user-friendly preventing the user from making a

mistake. The user simply cannot insert the dust bag or HEPA filter of the vacuum cleaner

incorrectly. All command buttons are big, clear and practical. It is equipped with sensors and

warning lights showing when it is time to change the 3 lt. dust bag or HEPA13 filter. There is a

remote control on the ergonomic handle so that controls can be easily done via the buttons.

    PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:

1350 Watt power version reaches 425Watt suction power. Although Terra possesses a high

performance, thanks to the isolated air chamber it is very quiet. After many prototypes and

researches in R&D department, all parts of the vacuum cleaner are designed so that they can be

assembled quickly and a minimum error rate. As a result of those economical designs, the cost of

the production has decreased. All plastic parts of Terra are made of recyclable material. A sign hasbeen placed on each part that shows the type of the materials used in production of such part

    facilitating the recycling.

    SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:

    Product dimensions are 350mm x 480mm x 320mm

    RESEARCH ABSTRACT:

Hundreds of vacuum cleaners were tested by the end users letting us to observe their ergonomic

tendencies. After Performants tests, noise test done in our laboratories, we saw that Terra ranked

on the top of the competitors. To ensure the stability and the durability of the product we made

hundreds of prototypes of each part in our 3d printing machines. Our surveys which are based on

the first batches of Terra show that the end users are satisfied with the product which was our top

    goal to achieve.

    CHALLENGE:

The big challenge was to develop ergonomic control of the product not compromising from

aesthetics and function. The buttons designed in Terra, does not need to be pressed from a

specific spot, since the button will operate in a problem-free manner regardless of whichever spot

    thereon it is pressed

    x (H) 80mm wood (pine) box.

    RESEARCH ABSTRACT:

After spending 15 years on various boards (windsurf, snowboard, longboard) I realised that there

is not a single board on the market that has safe brake system and a possibility to attach a

windsurf sail. As an ID designer, I decided to build one. The first model was built in 2010, but the

experience I was aiming for came only with the 6th version in 2012. After this, there was no way

back. In 2014, I built the 10th version with very good results. Now I would like to put the final

    version (12th) on the market.

    CHALLENGE:

The hardest part was that to build the different versions in real. I mean working prototypes, with

lightweight composites. At the point where imagination and real materials meets, well it's always

tricky. The other difficulty was finding the perfect team to work with. The low budget represented

a serious challenge at the beginning: before the success of the crowdfunding campaign I had to

sell a lot of my belongings to finish the project. In spite of all the challenges, the unforgettable

feeling of actually riding on your own design makes it clear that it was worth every effort.
