Remove Barrier

Davit Pulley

Attachment for operator (additional fall arrest must be used)

After the HRA has been put into ‘rescue function’ the karabiner hook can be manoeuvred into the excavation using the crank handle and the casualty can be pulled to safety.

• During the rescue operation, there must always be direct or indirect visual or communicative contact with the person being rescued.

• In order to lift the casualty to safety the SheetGuard panel(s) will have to be removed. It is the responsibilty of the Davit Arm operator to ensure an alternative method of protection against falls from height is available during this operation. If present the casualty can be lifted safely on to the Ladder Access Platform.

• The device can only lift one casualty at any one time.• The Davit Pulley should be directly above the person to be

rescued in order to prevent swinging.

2.1.1 Engaging the Rescue Function: • Open the sealed lock. • Unfold the crank handle. • Pull out the locking pin until the crank handle axis pops out audibly and visibly. • Rotate the crank handle back and forth until the gear has engaged. The locking

pin jumps back into its initial position. • The "rescue function" of the Height Safety Device is established. • The casualty can now be cranked up and down.

Note: After using the rescue hoisting facility, the HRA must always be checked by a competent person trained by the manufacturer.

In an emergency the HRA MUST be put into ‘rescue function’. Mabey Hire highly recom-mend that this is carried out when first installed and is to be used as a rescue device.

2.1 In An Emergency - Rescue

This User Guide is to be fully read and understood before using any part of the Davit Arm System. Non-observance of the User Guide will put lives at risk. The components, when installed in accordance in section 5, can be used as both a fall arrest system and as a rescue device.

2. How to Use On Site

Note: Mabey Hire highly recommend that the Universal Davit Clamp for Sheets, Davit Arm and HRA should be installed as soon as the Trench Sheets are installed. It is assumed that the installation processes have been carried out as per section 5. Please refer to section 5 for full installation details.

An emergency operations plan considering any possible emergency situation at the workplace MUST be available. 1.1 Setting up On Site Prior to Starting Work (see also Section 5 for details)

This booklet is intended to provide basic information for users of the Mabey Hire Ltd Universal Davit Clamp for Sheets, Davit Arm and HRA Fall Arrest Block with Rescue Mechanism and to draw the clients’ attention to the practical aspects of handling, installation, safety and use which need to be considered in compiling a safe system of work. The Universal Davit Clamp enables the Davit Arm and HRA to be positioned above the Trench Sheet allowing its use as a fall arrest system or as a rescue system for personnel working within the excavation (see sections 2.1 & 2.2 for further details).

3.1 Lightweight Davit Clamp for Sheets3. Identification of Components

WARNING : THIS SYSTEM IS NOT FOR LIFTING OR LOWERING OF LOADS.

Once inspected, the user can be attached to the hook of the HRA via his / her appropriate harness (see section 6.0.6 for details) and using the Ladder Access Platform descend down the ladder. When descending into the excavation the Davit Pulley should be in a perpendicular position above the head of the person in order to prevent swinging if a fall occurred. In order to allow this the Davit Arm must be allowed to rotate freely within the Davit Clamp.

Check the karabiner hook is functioning properly (self-closing, lockable). Check the device is free from damage. An HRA with a damaged connecting device, e.g. ropes with a kink or broken/torn strand, must not be used. An HRA that has already arrested a fall MUST NOT be used, see section 3.3 on how to identify if this has happened.

When using the Davit Clamp, Davit Arm, HRA (Fall Arrest Block with Rescue Mecha-nism) and Mabey Hire Ladder Access Platform as a fall arrest system, the HRA needs to be visually inspected and a functional test of the HRA must be performed before every use. To do so, once set up pull the rope. The ratchets must lock audibly and the device must lock. Firmly hold the rope and allow it to retract into the fall arrest block in a controlled manner. Warning: If the wire rope is released, it may cause serious injury and damage to the

HRA by its quick and uncontrolled retraction into the housing.

The Universal Davit Clamp can be used on M6 or M7 sheets by special request, please contact a Mabey Hire Engineer for further details.

If the Pile Grips are supplied as individual items lift them onto the aligned sheets at the required centres, typically for M8, M12, M15, M17, 4A, 6W, 9W, 12W, 16W, 20W, 25W, 32W, LX8, LX12, LX16, LX20, LX25 and LX32 sheets this will be on the adjacent pans (see Fig. c). For Mulitsheet 500-4, 500-6, Multilock 500-4 and M11 a single pan should be left free between grips (see Fig. d on page 6). Leave the handles loose for final adjustment, making sure that the handles face away from the excavation so they can be accessed quickly and easily. Note: Always ensure that the Pile Grips are always positioned on the large

pan closest to the excavation.

5.0.2. Prior to installing the pre-assembled Universal Davit Clamp on the sheet wall, it is recommended that the Pile Grips are set at the appropriate centres. (See section 5.2 for details).Measure the distance (L) between the pan centres on the sheets where the assembly is to be installed.

• Multisheet 500-4, Multisheet 500-6, Multilock 500-4 and M11, a single pan should be left free between Pile Grips. (Fig. a)

• 4A, 6W, 9W, 12W, 16W, 20W, 25W, 32W, LX8, LX12, LX16, LX20, LX25 and LX32 will typically be installed on adjacent front facing pans closest to the excavation.

5.0.1. Open or close the Pile Grips to fit the required sheet thickness by rotating the two handles. Note: It is advisable to wind each handle a small amount so that they do

not lock against each other. Do NOT use excessive force to tighten or loosen handles, (e.g. Do NOT hammer).

Note: It is the responsibilty of the installer to ensure an alternative method of protection against falls from height is available during this operation.

The weight of the assembly and all the individual components are indicated in section 3, and subject to a handling assess-ment, may be lifted using suitable lifting equipment. It is advised that the Universal Davit Clamp and the Davit Arm are NOT mechanically lifted together. The Universal Davit Clamp will usually arrive on site pre-assembled, but may require adjusting to achieve the required arrangement.

5. Installation (Dismantling is reverse procedure)

4.1 Manpower The Health and Safety Regulations require that personnel deployed are suitably trained, experienced and supervised by a competent person. Mabey Hire Ltd can provide suitable training, please contact Mabey Hire for details.

4.2 Handling • It is advisable that protective gloves are worn at all times when using this equipment. • The main parts of the Clamp have steel lifting handles. These can be used to lift the equipment manually, subject to a manual handling assessment by 2 or more people or mechanically using suitable equipment.

product user guide

Since our policy is one of continual improvement, components may vary in detail from the descriptions given in this publication.Mabey Hire Limited can provide training on the assembly and use of the Davit Arm System.

9. General

Use the Davit Arm System for lifting anything other than a casualty.Use damaged equipment. Modify the system or open the casing of ANY component in any circumstances. Re-use the equipment without being fully checked and signed off by a authorised party if a fall arrest or rescue situation has occurred.Allow ANY oil or grease onto the wire rope as this will stop the fall arrest function working.Retract the wire rope in an uncontrolled manner as this will cause the wire rope to retract quickly into the HRA housing and WILL damage the internal mechanism.Strip down or take apart ANY component. Leave the casualty hanging.Use if you have not been appropriate trained or are competent to do so.Use the Davit Bracket with any other Davit Arm other than the one stated in section 3.Use without the correct edge protection in place.

8.2 Don’t

Regularly check ALL components for malfunctions.Regularly check the Pile Grips (DAVIT-PG) on the trench sheets are secure and tight.Regularly check the Clamp Bolts (M20x200) for the Pile Grips and Uplift Clamps are in position and secure.Regularly check that the SheetGuard panels and posts are securely fixed to the trench sheets.Store ALL components in a clean and dry area where they can be easily and quickly accessed.Advise Mabey Hire immediately if a fall arrest or rescue incident has occured. Ensure all Locking Pins are correctly installed and undamaged.Use the additional securing point in conjuction with a fall arrest device to protect the operator from falls during use.Position the equipment directly above the casuality / ‘person to be protected’ to avoid any swing when being rescued or when falling.

8.1 Do 8. Summary - Do’s and Don’ts

7.3 Inspection

7.2.1. The lifeline shall only retract under load. On no account may the lifeline be fully pulled out and released because the karabiner hook jolting against the device may cause the retraction spring to break.

7.2.2. HRA Fall Arrest Blocks with Recovery Mechanism should be stored in dry, dust and oil free condition in a suitable container.

7.2.3. Components which have become wet during cleaning or use may only be dried naturally, not near a fire or similar heat sources.

7.3.1. The service life of the HRA fall arrest block with recovery mechanism must be determined in the yearly inspection.7.3.2. After every use as a fall arrest or a rescue system, the system must be inspected by an expert trained by the man-

ufacturer, (see section 3.3 for details on identifying a HRA which has been subjected to a fall load).7.3.3. ALL components (excluding edge protection) MUST be inspected and certified under the LOLER regulations every
