BRIDGE BEARING PADS:

There are two broad types of bridge bearings, either ‘elastomeric’ or ‘mechanical’. Intermediate (combination) types of bearings are also used where an elastomer is used to provide rotational capacity and horizontal movement occurs mechanically.

In elastomeric bearings, movements and rotations are accommodated by compressing or shearing layers of rubber, so these bearings are always deforming elastically.

The mechanical bearing permits translation and rotation by sliding, rolling or rocking on metal parts, and these bearings are virtually incompressible.

POT BEARINGS:

These bearings incorporate a disc of rubber trapped inside a shallow piston and cylinder assembly. The result is similar to a hydraulic cylinder containing a viscous fluid, and the rubber disc can support pressures. The piston can tilt within the cylinder without damage to itself or the rubber and rotation capacities can be achieved. Horizontal translation can be achieved by using a sliding bearing on one external face. Standard bearings are manufactured which offer a range of vertical load capacities of up to 30,000kN and cater for horizontal movements of more than 50mm.

CHARACTERISTICS:

• Expansion joints provide continuity of the road surface at the interface between the bridge deck and the abutments.• Expansion joints are used to accommodate movements and withstand loadings as well as for operational requirements. NOISE REDUCING SURFACE:

Particularly in urban areas, expansion joints should not generate noise if this can be avoided. Therefore, Rainbow Developers has introduce in Pakistan Market its expansion joints to feature an optional noise-reducing surface.

The unique patented “sinus plates” with their “teeth” design eliminate straight edges perpendicular to the direction of travel and ensure that vehicles traveling over the joint continuously grip the surface. In this way, noise generated by vehicles traveling over the joint is demonstrably reduced.

In contrast to finger joints, there is no restriction on the type of traffic passing over expansion joints with sinus plates. The special design of these sinus plates also permits motor cyclists as well as for cycle bikers to pass over the joint safely.

Expansion joints with sinus plates are very suitable for use on bridge structures in residential areas and in other areas that are sensitive to noise.

Noise measurements performed on different structures by an independent institute have shown that expansion joints with sinus plates are significantly less noisy (up to 70% less noise generated) than other types of expansion joint.

RAINBOW RUBBER HUMP SEAL (OPTIONAL):

Rainbow Developers has manufactured and importer Rubber hump seal. It consists of an elastomeric sealing element with an asymmetric hump on the top. Due to this special shape, the hump maintains its height as the joint opens and closes.

The hump profile keeps the joint gap free of dirt, especially of stones or other larger objects. At the same time, the profile acts as a double-sealing band that keeps the joint watertight. In addition, it protects pedestrians with high heels from being caught in the joint gap.

ASSEMBLY:

The joints are assembled in the Rainbow’s factory and delivered in a fixed condition according to the specified pre-setting value.

Rainbow Developers joints can also be installed in stages as necessary. In this case the joints are delivered in sections which then are connected together easily.

DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS:

•Designers need to consider the following points:•The resistance of the joint and of the anchoring points in the structure to the fatigue loading due to the traffic. •Waterproofing of the attachment between the joint and the waterproofing facing.•Ease of maintenance and replacement. •Silence and comfort. (The best joint is the one which is not apparent).

MOVEMENT:

The type of expansion joint to be used is dependent on the total range of movement to be expected.

Movements are categorized as follows:

DESIGN LOADS:

• Vertical load – Two 112kN wheel loads, 0.9m apart with a contact area of 265 x 265mm. The load shall be applied to the edge of the expansion gap. It may be spread transversely over such a length as is justified by the continuity and rigidity of the joint subject to a maximum of 450mm on either side of the centerline of each wheel.

• Horizontal load – A traffic force of 80 kN/m run of the joint acting at road level.

CHOICE OF BRIDGE JOINTS:

• Current practice is to make decks

integral with the abutments. The

objective is to avoid the use of joints

over abutments and piers.

• Expansion joints are prone to leak

and allow the ingress of corrosion

agents into the bridge deck and

substructure.

• In general all bridges are made

continuous over intermediate

supports and decks under 60m long

with skews not exceeding 30° are

made integral with their abutments.

comfortable riding surface, but

the capacity of movement is

restricted to 30mm. Only light or

semi dense traffic can be carried.

An elastomeric profile with steel

plate inserts is fastened on two

steel plates and anchored in the

DOWEL BARS:

Fixed end supports in bridges are provided for by dowel bars. At the free end, the support members can rotate and move horizontal whereas at the fixed end only rotation is allowed while all horizontal movements are restrained.

The dowel bars pass from the beams to the abutment and are normally placed between bearings to facilitate easy replacement of bearings. Sometimes where space is restricted, elastomeric bearings are provided with holes for dowel bars to pass through.

DESIGN CRITERIA FOR DOWEL BARS:

Longitudinal movements of the deck will be accommodated by the bearings at the free ends and horizontal loads will be carried by the dowel bars at the fixed ends. The dowel bars shall be designed to resist a combination of horizontal loads due to attractive load (Tr), wind load (W) and loads due to shrinkage, temperature and creep (FSTC). The dowel bars are specified by suitable diameter and minimum embedded length ( usually made to reach the main reinforcement in the support).

RAINBOW ROAD STUD:

The patented road stud system owned by Rainbow Developers was developed to fulfill the need for a high quality, long

lasting road stud with the ability to withstand the harshest climate and traffic conditions. It has in a short time established an

industry standard in durability, adaptability and cost-effectiveness.

Traffic safety is greatly enhanced by pavement markers. These studs with built in reflectors can be raised above the road

surface (surface mount) or recessed into a groove on the road & highway. They dramatically improve the driver’s ability to

see at night, especially in rain or fog.

Rainbow Developer’s used beads in Plastic and Aluminium Road Stud and also use especial plastic (ABS) that provide

high load resistance upto 20 ton, and Aluminium load resistance upto 30 ton solar powered markers are automatically self-

charging with a solar cell and capacitor. They have flashing LED lights embedded in a reflective lens and will flash for days

on a full charge. These all roads studs available in Aluminium and Plastic.

Markers can be quickly attached with our peel and stick butyl pads, excellent for driveways and low traffic areas. Some

movement may occur in hot conditions and heavier traffic. The other attachment options are 2 parts epoxy and hot

bituminous.

DISTANCE OF EACH ROAD STUD:

Distance of each road stud must be installed according to Road or highway standard and the advice of designer / consultant.

INSTALLATION OF ROAD STUD:

• Hydraulic powered drilling equipment is the only approved method of installation the road stud on public roads in the AASHTO ,BSS AND OTHER RELEVENT QUOTES.• The drilling equipment unit consists of 152mm diameter head, which will drill out to a depth of 38mm. On reaching this depth the drill is raised, moved forward 130mm and a second hole drilled out.• The drill is then traversed between the two holes and the resulting cavity will be to the required tolerances.• Hands of a shell on both sides to facilitate workers falsified at the time of installation with Shell and not to engage in dirty reflectors. • Nail inserted with the ground, and then glues bonding, double reinforced, and strong stability. • Saline-alkali Tolerance corrosion, abrasion-resistant sand. • Installed in the center line, the lines can be for traffic flow in the use of the road, and can also be used to slow down spike.

ANTI GLARE SCREEN:

Rainbow Developers Anti-Glare Screen Systems protect the vehicle driver extensively against glare emanating from light sources and therefore make a signi ficant contribution to the safety of the drivers. The particular criteria for using anti-glare screen systems are frequent accidents during darkness, heavy traffic at night and unfavourable topographical condi tions where separate directions are indicated by central strips on the road. Our anti-glare screen systems are also usage for Super Highway, Motor way, National Highway and high-speed railway tracks running parallel to each other.

Rainbow Developers Anti-Glare Screen Systems have been tested as per International Standard and have successfully passed all relevant tests. Additionally, the wind channel test has been successfully carried out at a wind speed of 160 km/h – 44.44 m per second.
