Product Specification

Glazing Bars

The system is suitable for use on buildings requiring simple roofs, canopies and walkway/shelters etc. - dual or mono pitch from approximately 25° to 45° and is designed generally in accordance with BS 5516-1: 2004

The range of profiles is based around a 60mm sight-line, with light, standard and heavy duty bars. Section performance requirements must be calculated from site conditions and all loading requirements. Please contact our technical office for advice and support regarding application.

The system is designed for drainage via water channels in the glazing bars. The glass or panel infills are retained with captive TPR glazing gaskets.

Bars can the thermally enhanced by using external cover caps with channel isolator KAS196 and internal bar cladding section KAS190 (white or brown only).

Ancillary profiles are provided such as end fillers and end closures, F sections and wall bars, fixing brackets and end plates. Rafter glazing bars are also available.

Materials:Aluminium profiles are extruded from alloy 6060/6063 T6 complying with the recommendations of BS EN 755:1-9

Finishes:Mill finishEtched and anodised to BS 3987: 1991 (01.06.2007) - Silver AA25 or colours on request.Polyester Powder coat paint to BS EN 12206-1:2004. See separate list for standard colour range available.

Construction:Cover caps are secured using stainless steel screws (polytop) driven into extruded screw splines. All joints should be sealed against water penetration. Stop ends are secured in the same fashion.

Glass, Glazing and Infil Panels:The system can accommodate 24mm IGU's or composite panels and 10mm or 16mm glazing variations by using different external cover caps. Other glazing options can be considered on request.

Installation:Kestrel Aluminium Systems Limited supply a range of accessories to compliment the basic system. However, rain water goods and purpose made flashings and trims etc. are NOT stocked.

Design Good Practice

Design guide for roofs

1. Roofs that have a pitch of less than 15° are considered as 'flat' and are not suitable for this type of roof glazing system.

2. Always consult a qualified Structural Engineer for more complex roof designs as the loads experienced on the roof members are greater than that for vertical glazing.

3. Roofs can typically experience greater negative loads (suction on roof) than positive loads (wind, snow, self weight etc.) so make sure ALL structural fixings are in suitable solid grounds and of a type that will resist the increased pull out forces.

4. When glazing with glass over head (as opposed to plastics) the inner pane of an IGU should always be a laminate safety glass. This is to protect building occupants below from being showered with glass that is toughened but may contain nickel sulphide inclusions which in turn may lead to spontaneous glass fracture and failure of the inner skin. Toughened glass may still be used on the outer pane, if a safety glass is necessary and a requirement of the project specification. Single glazed over head glazing should thus always use a laminate glass. Please note that laminate glass is not inherently as strong as a toughened glass - so the thickness should allow for safe carrying of all loads including those necessary for maintenance/cleaning. See note 5.

5. Bar centres - 600mm bar centres remains the optimum size for ease of fitting and securing external cover caps etc. The designer has a responsibility to specify suitable products to enable a project to be executed safely. It is therefore important that the glazing contractor is approached early on in the design stage to discuss the practicalities of bar centres over 600mm. We do not recommend the use of the popular 6.4mm laminated glass in sloping patent glazing at centres over 650mm, due to the risk of mechanical breakage occurring (self weight). At wider centres, we recommend using a special toughened laminated composition.

6. Over laps and over hangs. Overlaps i.e. a lead flashing dressed on to the glass should overlap by the equivalent to a 75mm vertical drop to prevent capillary action from drawing moisture up the glass face to a point where it may leak onto the inner faces. Overhangs should be a minimum of 50mm from the vertical surface below to prevent moisture and drips being blown back and up an inner glass face. On shallower pitches of roof this should be increased to at least 75mm. The steeper the pitch of a roof the easier the runoff will be - So always pay close attention to the weathering details of a shallow pitch roof. Lead should be typically code 4 (1.8mm) and horizontal lead flashing over laps between 100mm to 150mm depending on site exposure.

7. Discharges from down pipes or other concentrations of water should not be allowed to flow over sloping glazing. Separate drainage gutters should always be provided.
