Intended Use
The Ironton wet sharpener has been designed to sharpen chisels, knives, scissors and various types of
cutting blades.
The wet sharpening stone is continually cooled and lubricated from the water reservoir, ensuring a sharp,
square and clear cutting edge. Simple set up of the adjustable tool holder and tool support bar makes
various types and sizes of blades easily sharpened square across the surface of the sharpening wheel.
The included angle gauge will assist in setting up the correct angle for the tool to be sharpened, while the
blade holder will assist in the sharpening of small knives and blades.
Leather polishing wheel is used after a sharpening stone to smooth out any irregularities and create a
clean, sharp finish to the cutting edge.

Work Area Safety:
• Inspect the work area before each use. Keep the area clean, dry, free of clutter, and well lit. A
cluttered, wet, or dark work area can contribute to injuries.
• Do not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable liquids,
gases, or dust. Power tools create sparks which may ignite the dust or fumes.
• Be aware of all power lines, electrical circuits, water pipes, and other mechanical hazards in your
work area. Some of these hazards may be hidden from your view and may cause personal injury
and/or property damage if contacted.
• Keep bystanders, children, and visitors away while operating a power tool. Distractions can cause
you to lose control.
USE OF THIS SHARPENER CAN GENERATE AND DISBURSE DUST OR OTHER AIRBORNE
PARTICLES. Always wear a face shield when operating the sharpener. Operate the sharpener only in a
well-ventilated area and provide for proper dust removal. Use dust collection system wherever possible.
Exposure to the dust may cause serious and permanent respiratory or other injury, and death. Avoid
breathing the dust, and prolonged contact with the dust. Allowing dust to get into your mouth or eyes, or
lay on your skin may promote absorption of harmful material. Always use properly fitting NIOSH/OSHA
approved respiratory protection appropriate for dust exposure, and wash exposed areas with soap and
water.
Electrical Safety
• Power tool plugs must match the outlet. Never modify the plug in any way. Do not use any adapter plugs in any earthed
(grounded) power tools. Double insulated tools are equipped with a polarized plug (one blade is wider than the other).
This plug will fit in a polarized outlet only one way. If the plug does not fit fully in the outlet, reverse the plug. If it still
does not fit, contact a qualified electrician to install a polarized outlet. Double insulation eliminates the need for the three
wire grounded power cord and grounded power supply system.
• Do not expose power tools to rain or wet conditions. Water entering a power tool will increase the risk of electric shock.
• Avoid body contact with earthed or grounded surfaces such as pipes, radiators, ranges and refrigerators. There is an
increased risk of electric shock if your body is grounded.
• Do not abuse the cord. Never use the cord for carrying, pulling or unplugging the power tool. Keep cord away from heat,
oil, sharp edges or moving parts. Damaged cords increase the risk of electric shock.
• When operating a power tool outside, use an extension cord suitable for outdoor use. These cords are rated for outdoor
use and reduce the risk of electric shock.
Personal Safety
• Stay alert, watch what you are doing, and use common sense when operating any power tool. Do
not use the drill when tired or under the influence of medication or alcohol. A moment of inattention
while operating power tools may result in serious personal injury.
• Use safety equipment. Always wear eye protection. Safety equipment such as dust mask, non-skid
safety shoes, hardhat, or hearing protection for appropriate conditions will reduce personal injuries.
• Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing or jewelry. Keep hair, clothing and gloves away from
moving parts as they can be caught in moving parts. Air vents may cover moving parts and should
be avoided.
• Avoid accidental starting. Ensure the trigger switch is in the off position before connecting the drill
with power. Plugging in power tools that have the switch turned on, or carrying a power tool with
your finger on the switch, can result in accidental injury.
• Remove any loose parts or materials before turning the sharpener tool on. Loose parts or
material can get caught in the rotating wheels and may result in personal injury.
• Do not over reach. Maintain stable footing and balance at all times. Loss of balance in an
unexpected situation can cause an injury.
• If devices are provided for connection of dust extraction and collection facilities, ensure these
are connected and properly used. Use of these devices can reduce dust related hazards.
• Do not use a ladder or unstable support. Stable footing on a solid surface enables better control
of the drill in unexpected situations.
• Keep tool handles dry, clean and free from oil and grease. Slippery handles cannot ensure safe
control of the drill.

Additional Specific Safety Rules
• Do not operate this machine until it is completely assembled and installed according to the
instructions. A machine incorrectly assembled can cause serious injury.
• OBTAIN ADVICE from your supervisor, instructor, or another qualified person if you are not
thoroughly familiar with the operation of this machine. Knowledge is safety.
• FOLLOW ALL WIRING CODES and recommended electrical connections to prevent shock or
electrocution.
• ALWAYS USE THE PROVIDED BLOTTER and wheel flanges to mount the grinding wheels on the
sharpener shaft to prevent wheel damage or accidental separation. Separation can result in
fragments flying off the wheel at high speeds.
• USE ONLY WHEELS suitable for the speed of the machine. Unsuitable grinding wheels can come
apart, throwing fragments out at high speeds.
• USE ONLY WHEELS that have a bore exactly equal to the arbours of the machine. Never attempt to
machine an undersized wheel to fit an arbours. Unsuitable grinding wheels can come apart, throwing
fragments out at high speeds.
• DO NOT overtighten the wheel nut.
• DO NOT USE A WHEEL THAT VIBRATES. Dress the grinding wheel, replace it, or replace the
bearing of the shaft. Unsuitable grinding wheels can come apart, throwing fragments at high
speeds.
• INSPECT WHEELS for cracks or fragments before starting the machine .REPLACE DAMAGED
WHEELS immediately. Parts of the wheel can be thrown at high speeds causing serious injury.
• ADJUST EYE SHIELDS close to the grinding wheel, and re-adjust as the wheel wears down. Flying
sparks are dangerous and can cause fires or explosions.
• ALWAYS MAKE SURE the eye shields are in place, properly adjusted, and secured.
• ADJUST TOOL RESTS close to the grinding wheel (1/8" separation or less). Tighten the tool rest
securely to prevent shifting positions, and re-adjust as the wheel wears down. The workpiece can be
drawn into the wheel, causing damage to the workpiece and/or serious injury.
• Make sure machine is properly mounted to bench or stand before starting motor.
• Stand to one side before turning the machine on. Loose fragments or wheel parts could fly from the
wheel at high speeds.
• NEVER GRIND ON A COLD WHEEL. Run the sharpener for one full minute before applying the
workpiece. A cold wheel has a tendency to chip. Those fragments could fly from the wheel at high
speeds.
• Never start the machine with the workpiece against the grinding wheel. The workpiece can be drawn
into the wheel, causing damage to the machine and/or serious injury.
• CLEAN THE MACHINE thoroughly when processing different types of workpieces (wood, steel, or
aluminum). Combining wood and metal dust can create an explosion or fire hazard. DO NOT GRIND
or polish magnesium. Fire will result.
• NEVER GRIND NEAR FLAMMABLE GAS OR LIQUIDS. Sparks can create a fire or an explosion.
• AVOID awkward operations and hand positions. A sudden slip could cause a hand to move into the
sharpening wheel.
• KEEP ARMS, HANDS, and fingers away from the wheel. The abrasive surfaces can cause serious
injury.
• Always use tool rest and hold workpiece firmly with both hands when grinding. Loss of control of the
workpiece can cause serious injury.
• DRESS THE WHEEL on the face only. Dressing the side of the wheel could cause it to become too
thin for safe use.
• GRIND A WORKPIECE using the face of the grinding wheel only. Loss of control of the workpiece
can cause serious injury.
• NEVER APPLY COOLANT directly to the grinding wheel. Coolant can weaken the bonding strength
of the sharpening wheel and cause it to fail. Dip the workpiece in water to cool it.
• DO NOT TOUCH the ground portion of a workpiece until it has cooled sufficiently. Grinding creates
heat.
• PROPERLY SUPPORT LONG OR WIDE workpieces. Loss of control of the workpiece can cause
serious injury.
• Never perform layout, assembly, or set-up work on the table/work area when the machine is running.
A sudden slip could cause a hand to move into the wheel. Severe injury can result.
• Turn the machine OFF, disconnect the machine from the power source, and clean the table/work
area before leaving the machine. Lock the switch in the “OFF” position to prevent unauthorized use.
Someone else might accidentally start the machine and cause serious injury to themselves.

Setting Up for Sharpening
When sharpening, position the tool support bar in the vertical mount holes.
Note: Sharpening is performed against the direction of rotation.
1. Fit the adjustable tool holder to the tool
support bar (See “Installing the tool
holder” section). Loosen the tool support
clamps. Adjust the height of the tool
support until there is a small gap
between the surface of the sharpening
wheel and the lower guides of the
adjustable tool holder.
2. Tighten the tool support clamps.
3. To ensure that no part of the adjustable
tool holder comes into contact with the
sharpening wheel, complete these two
checks:
a. Slide the adjustable tool holder back and
forth along the tool support bar.
b. With the bottom of the adjustable tool
holder positioned directly above the
wheel, make sure there is clearance
between the tool holder and sharpening
wheel.
4. Loosen the two clamps on the adjustable
tool holder enough to insert the blade to
be sharpened. Maneuver the blade until
it touches the sharpening wheel at the
desired sharpening angle.
5. Maneuver the blade within the adjustable
tool holder until the angle of the blade
sits flat on the face of the sharpening
wheel.
6. Ensure that the blade is square across
the full width of the sharpening wheel.
7. When you are satisfied that the blade is
correctly positioned, tighten the clamps
knobs on the adjustable tool holder.
Setting Up with the Angle Gauge
1. The angle gauge is used to determine the
cutting edge angle of a tool. You can determine the appropriate angle required for your blade by reading the label on the angle gauge. Alternatively, you can test and select the blade angle by inserting the blade into the notches on the sides of the gauge.
2. After determining which notch best suits the blade angle required, set the support bar and adjustable tool holder. Insert the blade within the tool holder, so that it touches the sharpening wheel. (See “Setting up for sharpening”). Rotate the clamp knobs on the adjustable tool holder until the blade is secure, but can still be moved.
3. Position the gauge on the sharpening wheel, with the selected notch closest to the tool tip. Maneuver the blade within the tool holder until the back face of the blade aligns with the angle gauge.
4. Check that the blade is square across the width of the sharpening wheel and tighten the adjustable clamp knobs. Remove the angle gauge.
Setting Up for Polishing
1. Fit the tool support to the rear of the unit (see
“Installing the tool support for polishing”)
Note: Initially you will need to condition the polishing wheel. Apply machine oil to bring the leather polishing wheel to a darker slightly wet color on all its surface. Following this apply an initial layer of polishing paste covering the entire surface and work it into the wheel.
2. Apply machine oil to the leather polishing wheel, followed by some of the polishing paste.
3. Switch on the machine. While the polishing wheel is rotating, evenly distribute the polishing paste into the leather with a flat object such as a ruler or spatula.
4. Set the adjustable tool holder (see “Setting up
for Sharpening”).
Important Electrical Information
A separate electrical circuit should be used for your machines. This circuit should not be less than #12
wire and should be protected with a 20-A time-lag fuse. If an extension cord is used, use only 3-wire
extension cords which have 3-pronged grounding type plugs and matching receptacle which will accept
the machine’s plug.
Before connecting the machine to the power line, make sure the switch is in the "OFF" position and be
sure that the electric current is of the same characteristics as indicated on the machine. All line
connections should make good contact. Running on low voltage will damage the machine.
Grounding Instructions
In the event of a malfunction or breakdown, grounding provides a path of least resistance for electric
current to reduce the risk of electric shock. This machine is equipped with an electric cord having an
equipment grounding conductor and a grounding plug.
THIS MACHINE MUST BE GROUNDED WHILE IN USE TO PROTECT THE OPERATOR FROM
ELECTRIC SHOCK. Improper connection of the equipment-grounding conductor can result in risk of
electric shock.
The plug must be plugged into a matching outlet that is properly installed and grounded in
accordance with all local codes and ordinances. The left-hand figure below shows an outlet box with
grounded three-prong receptacles. The right-hand figure shows an outlet box with ungrounded
two-prong receptacles and a grounding adapter (not included) used to complete the ground.
IN ALL CASES, MAKE CERTAIN THE RECEPTACLE IN QUESTION IS PROPERLY GROUNDED. IF
YOU ARE NOT SURE, HAVE A QUALIFIED ELECTRICIAN CHECK THE RECEPTACLE.
Do not modify the sharpener cord plug provided – if it will not fit the outlet, have the proper outlet
installed by a qualified electrician. The conductor with insulation having an outer surface that is green
with or without yellow stripes is the equipment-grounding conductor. If repair or replacement of the
electric cord or plug is necessary, do not connect the equipment-grounding conductor to a live terminal.
Check with a qualified electrician or service personnel if the grounding instructions are not completely
understood, or if in doubt as to whether the sharpener is properly grounded. Use only 3-wire extension
cords that have 3-pronged grounding type plugs and matching 3-conductor receptacles.
Have a qualified electrician repair or replace damaged or worn cord immediately.
Extension Cords
Use proper extension cords. Make sure your extension cord is in good condition and is a 3-wire
extension cord which has a 3-pronged grounding type plug and matching receptacle which will accept
the machine’s plug. When using an extension cord, be sure to use one heavy enough to carry the current
of the machine. An undersized cord will cause a drop in line voltage, resulting in loss of power and
overheating. The table shows the correct gauge to use depending on the cord length. If in doubt, use the
next heavier gauge. The smaller the gauge number, the heavier the cord.

Operation
Grinding Tips
• Always be sure the grinding wheel is wet before grinding by having the reservoir filled and in the
proper location.
• Wear the proper protective clothing. Safety glasses/face shield and a dust mask should be worn at
all times.
• Grasp the workpiece firmly and properly support it on the tool support bar or grinding jig during
operation. Maintain even pressure and control of the workpiece when grinding.
• Concentrate on the task at hand. STOP grinding if other people are distracting you or your mind is on
something else.
Always lock the power switch “OFF” when the sharpener is not in use. In the event of a power failure,
blown fuse, or tripped circuit breaker, turn the switch “OFF”, preventing accidental start-up when the
power comes on.
Positioning the Tool Support Bar
• The wet sharpener is equipped with a tool support bar that serves as a tool rest and as an
attachment point for the sharpener jig. It can be attached in two positions, allowing for grinding with
or against the rotation direction of the grinding wheel.
• The tightening knobs on each attachment point allow the tool support bar to be adjusted and locked
in position, depending on the specific task required.
• Working against the rotation removes large amounts of materials quickly but does not yield precise
results. Use this method for coarse tools such as axes.
• Working with the rotation yields much more precise results and removes less material. Use this
method for finer tools, such as knives or carving tools.
Grinding Against Wheel Rotation
The sharpener has been outfitted with an electrical power switch that permits the grinding wheel to rotate
in the front and reverse directions.
Always disconnect the sharpener from power during setup and adjustment to avoid an accidental
start that may result in personal injury and tool damage.
1. Disconnect the sharpener from power.
2. Position the machine with the power switch facing you.
3. Attach the tool support bar in the vertical mounts, as shown in the figure on the right.
4. Be sure it is securely positioned and will not move during grinding.
5. Rest your workpiece on the tool support bar with the sharpened edge pointing away from you.
6. Grind your workpiece in the indicated grinding area

start that may result in personal injury and tool damage.
To use the angle guide:
1. Disconnect the sharpener from power.
2. Locate the eight measuring notches on the angle guide finder.
3. Find the angle notch that best fits the tool you wish to grind by placing the sharpened edge of the workpiece into each notch.
4. Adjust the positioning of the tool and the tool support bar height as necessary so that the sharpened edge of the tool is flat against both the grinding wheel and the angle edge on the angle guide.
The Water Reservoir
Always disconnect the sharpener from power during setup and adjustment to avoid an accidental
start that may result in personal injury and tool damage.
The wet sharpener is designed for wet grinding and should never be used without water. The mounting tabs on the reservoir serve as hooks to attach to the reservoir mounting slots.
To fill and position the reservoir:
1. Disconnect the sharpener from power.
2. Remove the reservoir and fill it with water to just below the V-shaped notch.
3. Attach the reservoir to the sharpener:
Tips:
• Check the water level before every use and be sure the wheel is wet before you begin grinding. DO
NOT use the sharpener without water.
• Leaving the grinding wheel stored in water will cause damage to the wheel and create potential
hazards because the wheel will become unbalanced. Once any grinding process is complete, return
the reservoir to the storage position to prevent prolonged water exposure to the wheel.
• Empty, rinse, and refill the reservoir regularly. This prevents metal and stone from accumulating in
the reservoir.
• Place a magnet in the reservoir to catch and collect metal filings. This will help prevent excessive
metal accumulation on the grinding wheel.

Wheel Dressing
Depending on the type of grinding you do, the grinding wheel may require periodic dressing.
A variety of dressing tools are available (not included) and can be used to restore the abrasive quality of
the wheel surface and bring the wheel edge back to the right form.
Refer to the instructions that accompany your dressing accessory for complete details on how to properly
dress a wheel. When grinding, metal objects become heated quickly. It is important to keep moving the
object back and forth across the face of the grinding wheel and to cool the object frequently using the
coolant tray.
Polishing
The leather polishing wheel on the sharpener and the included abrasive polishing paste can be used to
obtain a razor sharp edge on many tools. Before use, the polishing wheel must be properly prepared.
Note: A slight wobble of the stopping wheel when it is rotating is normal and does not affect performance.
To prepare the polishing wheel:
1. Disconnect the sharpener from power.
2. Evenly apply a light machine oil to the leather wheel. Use enough oil to provide a thorough coating, but not so much as to saturate the leather and result in dripping.
3. Apply a thin coat of abrasive polishing paste to the leather wheel using a wooden spreader or similar device. Distribute the paste evenly by hand-turning the wheel while spreading.
4. Connect the sharpener to power, then turn it on and continue to distribute the paste, still using the wooden spreader. Move the spreader lightly in a circular motion across the wheel.
5. Once the paste is evenly distributed, begin sharpening.
This preparation is sufficient for sharpening five to ten tools. If you notice a drop in sharpening performance or have sharpened more than ten tools, repeat the above steps.

Maintenance
Maintain your wet sharpener. It is recommended that the general condition of any wet sharpener be
examined before it is used. Keep your wet sharpener in good repair by adopting a program of
conscientious repair and maintenance. Have necessary repairs made by qualified service personnel.
Always disconnect the sharpener from power during setup and adjustment to avoid an accidental
start that may result in personal injury and tool damage.
The Grinding Wheel
The grinding wheel should be inspected before every use. Take care in storing grinding wheels to keep
them free from damage from moisture, from being dropped, or from having items dropped on them.
Wheel Replacement
To replace the grinding or polishing wheel:
1. Disconnect the sharpener from power.
2. Hold the wheel to stop it from turning, and remove the arbour nut or knob which holds the wheel on.
3. Remove the outer washer and the wheel.
4. Install the new wheel, then replace the washer and nut or knob and tighten with 4.05-4.95lb.ft torque.
Water Reservoir
Be sure to periodically empty, rinse and refill the water reservoir with clean water depending on
frequency of use. Failing to do so can lead to a build-up of sediment on the wheel itself, reducing
grinding performance.

Troubleshooting
Symptom Probable Cause Corrective Action
Motor will not start.
Low voltage Check power source for proper voltage.
Open circuit in motor or loose connections
Inspect motor for loose or open connections. Send motor for servicing if necessary.
Blown fuse or breaker Replace fuse or reset breaker.
Motor overheats.
Motor overloaded Reduce load on motor.
Extension cord too long and/or of insufficient gauge (weight)
Use an extension cord of appropriate gauge and length or plug the sharpener directly into a correct wall outlet.
Motor stalls (resulting in blown fuses or tripped breakers).
Shot circuit in motor or loose connections
Inspect motor for loose or shorted terminals or worn insulation. Send motor for servicing if necessary.
Low voltage Correct low voltage condition (for example: improper extension cord length or gauge).
Incorrect fuses or circuit breakers in power line
Install correct fuses or circuit breakers or plug sharpener into a circuit with correct fuses or breakers.
Motor overload Reduce load on motor.
Polishing wheel loses performance.
Insufficient wheel preparations Properly prepare wheel.
Wheel is damaged Replace wheel.
Wavy surface of workpiece.
Sharpener vibrating Make sure the sharpener is securely positioned on a level surface.
Workpiece is not held firmly Check the knobs of the tool holder and tool support bar and tighten is necessary. If a knob is stripped, replace it.
Wheel face is uneven Dress the grinding wheel.
Machine run with noises. Short of lubricating Added lubricating grease on the gear.

Warranty
Some dust created by power sanding, sawing, grinding, drilling, and other construction activities contains
chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm.
Some examples of these chemicals are:
• lead from lead-based paints,
• crystalline silica from bricks and cement and other masonry products, and
• arsenic and chromium from chemically-treated lumber.
Your risk from these exposures varies, depending on how often you do this type of work. To reduce your
exposure to these chemicals: work in a well-ventilated area, and work with approved safety equipment,
such as those dust masks that are specially designed to filter out microscopic particles.
