Heritage Cruise

Heritage Cruise - 2.5 hrsClutha River Cruises Heritage Cruise ventures through the spectacular scenery of the Roxburgh Gorge to the old gold towns of Doctors Point and Butchers Point. The Roxburgh Gorge is only accessible by boat and foot. Our Heritage Cruise offers a unique opportunity to explore these isolated reaches of the Might Clutha River and view some of New Zealand's best examples of European and Chinese gold mining.

Guests are greeted at the Alexandra boat ramp by their guide and skipper for the day. After a safety brief, all sit back on the superbly appointed cruise boats and gently drift down stream with the skipper spinning well polished yarns of days gone by. Starting with the discovery of gold in New Zealand, all the way through to gold mining during the depression, the skipper brings to life tales of endeavour and hardship.

The guide will take guests on a guided tour of Doctors Point, highlighting points of interest and explaining how a mining town operated. Guests can view the miners huts tucked away in the spectacular schist rock formations and wander through one of the best preserved 1860's mining towns in New Zealand.

Guests then sit back and enjoy a leisurely return trip to Alexandra, with plenty of opportunity to take in the stunning Central Otago scenery.

This trip includes morning/afternoon soft drinks and muffins, all served in our picnic area on the riverbank of the Clutha River at Doctors Point.

The Skipper/Guide

Steve, the skipper and guide, is an Australian who has resided in Central Otago for 20 years. Struck with a passion for all things gold, Steve started researching the history of the Clutha river gold mining years. He discovered tales of endeavour and hardship, but also of fortune and wonder. Visits to the secluded gold towns on the banks of the Clutha gave him and idea and in the Spring 2002 he launched Clutha River Cruises. On his tours Steve brings to life the vibrant history of the region and the gold mining era, all with the backdrop of stunning Central Otago scenery.

Overall tour time is 2.5hrs. Departs daily at 11am & 2pm. Minimum 2 pax.
