sintered Ag/AgCl electrodes, this effect would only occur to much

smaller areas. On the contrary, the new BrainCap features present

several advantages.

The electrodes are fixed directly on the cap without any adapter

making the new cap even more comfortable than the old one.

The new medium-elasticity cap fabric also increases the comfort and

furthermore, fits better different head sizes and forms. The presence

of serial number sticker simplifies questions related to tracking,

assembly and layout issues. Each electrode is labeled in order to

ease the recognition. Moreover, because of the new infracerebral cut

caps lay more firmly on the head in particular over posterior and frontal

regions. Last but not least, BrainCaps Standard 3 are very easy and fast

to clean after use.

If requested, several different customized solutions are offered.

The electrode disposition can be chosen among the international

10-20 system, its extended versions, triangulated equidistant

arrangements, mixed montages and fully customized solutions.

Different cap cuts are available: in addition to the known sub-

temporal cut adopted in previous standards, the new asiacut fits

better Asian head shapes. Different electrode types are also

available. For the co-registration of EEG/MEG and EEG/TMS signals,

In conclusion, an advice to customer using older BrainCaps who

BrainCap Standard 3 with Fast’n’Easy Electrodes

For the Brain Products customer who does not know this product

yet, BrainCap (see an example in the figure) is a well established

and appreciated solution for EEG recordings. Through fully

customizable layouts and up to 256 channels the EEG caps of this

family suit the most research applications from ERP to source

reconstruction. Moreover, the high quality Ag/AgCl electrodes satisfy

highest research demands including DC recordings.

Differently from cap types with detachable electrodes (e.g.

easycap) electrode cables are fixed on the cap and led (4) to

the leaving points of posterior lateral cable trees (6). Cables are

terminated into connector boxes (7) which can be directly connected

to the BrainAmp amplifiers. Thus the preparation time is speeded

up and the possibility to mess channel assignment is eliminated.

This solution does not restrict the freedom to choose only a subset

of electrodes for an experiment. Even when using a 128 channel cap –

the full channel set requires 4 BrainAmps – the customer can select the

first 32 or 64 channels so that only one or two amplifiers are needed.

This is possible because of a particular cable arrangement .

Since the market launch in 2003 BrainCap quality and standards

have been continuously improved taking into account both Brain

Products’ experience and customers’ opinions and requests. In

the meantime we have reached the third standard. But what are

BrainCap’s new features actually?

First of all, the electrode type is different. The well known ring

electrode has been replaced by a pin electrode while preserving the

ring-shaped overall geometry for easy, painless, and effective

impedance minimization, the actual sensor area has shrinked to 2 mm

diameter. The user does not need to be afraid of increased electrode

impedance due to the reduced electrode surface area: in case of
