3 Applications

Lasertriangulationisnowestablishedasastandardmea-surementtechnique.Itinvolvestheuseofalasertogen-erateahomogeneousline.Thislineisprojectedontoanobjectandanalyzedbyanareascancameraatadefinedangle.Changesinthelaserlineduetotheobjectssurfaceareprojectedontothecamerasensor.

Withthe increasingofautomationandaccelerationofmanu-facturing processes and simultaneously rising quality stan-dards, focus is shifting to optical 3D measuring systems. Inapplicationswherethegeometryofanobject isrelevanttoameasurement,lasertriangulationofferssignificantadvantagescomparedtoother(classic)2Dinspectionmethods.

Thisprofilecanbetranslatedintoheightinformation.3Ddataofthecompleteobjectisobtainedthroughthecon-stantmotionduringthemeasurementandcanbecom-paredwiththereferenceorrequirement.

4Applications

In particular with PCB inspection or comparable appli-cations in which the measured objects are very small, extremely high demands are placed on the projectionquality.Thisapplicationismainlyusedforcheckingcom-ponent presence and position as well as performing

solder paste inspections. Very thin lines enable resolu-tions of less than 10 μm.With the simultaneously highpeak power of the thin lines, the very high inspectionspeeds essential to mass production can be achieved.

EspeciallyinPCBinspection,thematerialsposetremen-douschallengestothemeasuringsystems.

Both,stronglyabsorbingmaterials(e.g.IChousings)andhighlyreflectivemetalmaterials(e.g.pins)mustbereli-ably surveyed. It is precisely for these applications thatbluelasersofferthebestcompromisebetweenverythinandcleanlineprojectionsandgoodvisibilityonshinysur-faces.

5 Applications

Laser triangulation is a proven technique for rail inspection.Continuousqualityinspectionsarerequiredtokeeptrackoftheabrasiontotherail.Cracks,flacking,andchippingcan leadtoseriousproblemsandmajoraccidents.

Rail inspection

Wherever a high output power, exceptional beam perfor-mance,andindustrial-suiteddesignisneeded,theZQ1seriesistherightchoice.Thelaseralongwithitsintelligentmonitoringfunctionsenablesahighstabilityinperformancealsoinroughenvironments.

ItisIP67ratedandshockandvibrationproofaccordingtoDINEN61373:2011-04,Cat2.Theintegratedactivecoolingsystemkeepsthelaserdiodeataconstanttemperature.Thelasercanbeintegratedefficientlyinasophisticatedmachinevisionset-up, due to its communication interfaces (RS-232 & I2C). Theusercaneasilyadjusttherightworkingdistancefortheapplica-tionwithitsmanualfocusoption.

Highpowerlaserswithuniformlinesareusedincombinationwithtwoormorecameras, togeneratedataoftheconditionof tracks. This construct is placed on a maintenance trainwhichcollectsdataalongthetrack.Thisconfigurationallowsthedirectmeasurementofmanydifferenttypesofraildefectsbysimultaneouslyacquiringhighresolution3Dand intensitydata.

Thissystemismarriedtosensors,customfilters,GPS-coordi-nates,andcamera imagesofthesurroundingtosynchronizethedata.Z-LASERcansupporttheseapplicationswithitsstruc-turedlightlaserseries.ThelaserZQ1hasbeendevelopedforthemostdemandingmeasurementapplicationsinthemarket.

Tire applications

DOT-Code-Reading

Tire Profile Measurement

Atireprofiledepthofat least1.6mmiscompul-sory inGermany. However at a 3mmtireprofiledepth, the tire reaches an efficiency of only ap-prox. 70%. Therefore, more and more garagesare installing automatic measurement stations.

Thisisbasedonalasertriangulationsystemwhichcan measure the profile depth quickly, preciselyandregardlessofthelackofcontrast,whilethecardrivespastthe3Dscanner.

Withthehelpof3Dlaserprofilometry,codedorem-bossednumbersand letterson thetirewall canberead.Thiscapabilityallowsforautomaticdetectionofthetiretypeandimportantserialorbatchnumbers.Thismakes it thatmuch easier to automate subse-quentqualityinspectionstepsandanyotherproces-singneeded.

The 3D scanner projects a highly precise laser lineontothetiretreadwhichisdetectedbythecamera.Asthetiremovesthroughthelaserline, thelaserlinechanges shape and interruptions of the projectedlaser lineoccur. These interruptions are then com-puted into a height profile. Themeasurement canbeperformedeveninrunningtraffic, thankstothestronglightintensityofthelaser.

Systems based on scattered light particle measurement areused in the qualification and quantification of particles, e.g.,incleanrooms,medicalfacilities,andautomotiveexhaustgasmeasurementsystems.

In this applicationadefinedamountof air or samplemateri-alispassedthroughalaserbeam.Thelightscatteringwhichiscausedbyorganicornon-organicparticlesleadtoconclusionsregardingsizeandamandofsuchparticles.

Laserdiffractionanalysis: Smallsampleparticlesareanalyzed.

Thenecessaryoptics(lensesorDOEs)areeachadaptedtotheopticalparametersofthelaserdiodeinordertoobtaintheidealprojectionresult.Manymoreprojectionsareavailableandcus-tomdevelopmentscanbeaffored.

Mostrelevanttoimageprocessingarehomogeneouslinepro-jections.Z-LASERoffersthoseintwodifferentversions,depend-ingontheworkingdistanceatwhichthelaseristobefocused.

Laserdiodeandcollimationopticsareauto-maticallyalignedwithapositioningaccuracyof0.2μmandthenweldedtogetherforfixation.

Optical highlights

It isnolongerenoughtouselensesandotheropticalcompo-nentsofthehighestquality.Theremainingtolerancesmustbecompensated by “active alignment” and precise adjustment.Thegeometryoftheprojectionpatternandthelightdistribu-tioninitarepermanentlymeasuredduringtheadjustmentpro-cess.Theresultisthenpermanentlyfixed.

Whereaspreviouslythesestepswerelargelycarriedoutman-uallyandtheresult thenfixedusingadhesivetechniques, thenewZX familynowonlyuseshigh-precisionassembly robots. These robotspositionopticalelements in several spatialaxes

withanaccuracyof0.2µm.Afteralignment, ZXmodulesarelaser-welded,wherebythecomponentsaremeltedandjoinedontheirrespectivecontactsurfaces.Noadditionalmaterial isintroduced.

Theprecisionoftheopticalsystemisthusnotonlyreproducibleatthehighestlevel,itisalsonolongerreducedbytheshrink-ageofadhesivesandplasticsorby joiningdifferentmaterialswithdifferentcoefficientsofthermalexpansion.Severaloftherequiredpropertiesofalinelasercanbecontrolledverywell.

BytheZ-LASERownrobot-controlledadjustmentandassemblyprocess,someoftheparametersnecessaryforagoodprojec-tioncouldbeimproved.

Electronic highlights

Each laser contains amicrocontroller that precisely regulatesthelasercurrent-andthustheopticalpower.Eachlasermod-ule is subjected to a complex calibration process, which alsoruns automatically and records a multidimensional map. Allrelevantparametersofthelaserdiodeareloggedandstored.Withtheaidof intelligentcontrolalgorithms, thelaserpowercannowbekeptconstantinalloperatingstates.

Disturbancessuchasthecouplingofextraneouslight,backre-flections,orstrongtemperaturefluctuationscanalsobecom-pensated.Thispreventsnotonlyadropinpower,butalsoan

increase, whichintheworstcasecouldviolatethelaserclass. These would be safety-relevant breaches that cannot occurwithahigh-endproductfromZ-LASER.

Thecalibrationof the laserpower iscarriedout for thecom-pletelasermodule,sothatallinfluenceswhichtheintegratedopticalelementsexertonthe laserpowerarealsotaken intoaccount.Afteraburn-in, i.e.a12-hourcontinuous runof thelaser, all parameters are checked and corrected if necessary.Above all, early failures of the laser diode are intercepted aswellastheagingprocess.

Theelectronicsandsoftwarehavealwaysbeenoptimizeddue totheconstantdevelopmentofproductsforimageprocessing.Standard functions such as TTL modulation, analog intensitycontrol, serial communication, anderrormessageshavebeenimprovedandprovidedwithadditionalfeatures.

Mechanical highlights

Z-LASER products are protected (IP 67) and robust againstshockandvibration.Thelaser-weldedstainlesssteelhousingsoftheZXfamilyisidealforheavydutyindustrialapplications.ZXlasermodulesareavailableindifferentversions,with10mm
