Building a Chain Sling

Step 1 – How many legs ?
Have a think about what weight you are lifting and what angle you
will be lifting at. This will help you determine how many legs you will
need.
STEP 2 – WHAT Diameter OF CHAIN ?
The weight you are lifting will determine which diameter of chain
you need. Refer to our working load limit charts on pages 8 & 10.
Step 3 – What length ?
Work out what length of chain you need – there is also the option to
add shortening clutches. Shortening clutches will allow you to
shorten the overall length of your chain.
Step 4 – End Termination
What you are lifting will determine which end termination you need.
Refer to our components on pages 9 & 11.

Inspection, Load Testing & NDT
On-site or in our workshop
INSPECTION
We carry out LOLER inspections of all lifting equipment both here, in our workshop, or on-site anywhere
throughout Scotland and Northern England. We can also travel further – even to India on one occasion, so if
you require us to travel further afield please get in touch to discuss your needs!
We have a number of mobile vans stocking a wide range of inspection equipment and spare parts for lifting
gear. All equipment once inspected is supplied with a report of thorough examination detailing the item, SWL,
inspection date and when the item is next due for inspection. We also offer a colour coding system using
either cable ties or Ritchie tags which are changed every 6 months to eliminate the risk of equipment being
used that has not been inspected.
LOLER regulations state that lifting accessories (slings, shackles, eyebolts, anything connecting a load to a
lifting appliance/machine) require at least 6 monthly inspection. For lifting appliances/machinery (chain blocks,
lever hoists, cranes, hoists, winches, forklifts and anything lifting a load either manually or machinery operated)
in the marine shipping and offshore industry, the MCA (Maritime Coastguard Agency) legislates that lifting
equipment should be thoroughly examined annually and proof load tested every 5 years.
LOAD TESTING
Our in house facilities include 30 tonne and 100 tonne hydraulic test beds, various hydraulic jigs, rams and
special purpose testing frames. We can design and engineer structures to load test a wide range of lifting
accessories.
We have a number of mobile vans stocking a wide range of load testing equipment, to allow for many
different testing solutions. All equipment once tested is supplied with a certificate which clearly indicates the
safe working load (SWL) and/or proof load (PL). We have test plates which can be attached to each item tested
indicating the ID number, SWL and test date.
NDT
We are also able to offer both destructive and non-destructive testing. A very easy way to determine the SWL
of a new piece of equipment would be to destructively test a sample to establish if it is able to reach its
maximum breaking load without failure. Non-destructive testing can include Magnetic Particle and Dye
Penetrant testing, which can be used for both pre and post load testing to ensure that there is no weakness in
the equipment which is not visible to eye.

Certification
For all new supply, inspected and tested items
We provide LOLER certification for all items either supplied, inspected or tested as standard. We can
also provide Declaration of Conformity certificates for each newly supplied item. We use an online
certification portal which each customer is given unique log in details to access at any time!
Once logged onto our portal, you are able to see a list of all of your active sites. This will allow you
to check the expiry date of each site, without having to access them all individually.
After you have clicked into a particular site, there are a number of options – this ranges from
opening individual certificates, downloading a batch of certificates or exporting a site register.
We do have a user guide available to help navigate your way around the site, or one of our team
will be more than happy to help should you have any issues!
