Photo selection I have selected this photo because it is the photo that looks most intimidating that doesn’t look grainy. The interesting composition draws the reader in while the stare on her face entices them to read the magazine because their intimidated by her. This photo is based on ‘The Source’, ‘Vibe’ and ‘Spin’ contents pages.

Levels

• The reason I needed to add levels to it was because the exposure levels on the photo is always wrong and using the “Auto” levels tool on Photoshop fixes this making the photo look better.

• However, this has made the photo too bright and under contrasted which I can fix using the brightness and contrast tool.

Brightness + Contrast

• Because the ‘Levels’ made the photo too bright and under contrast, using this ‘Brightness and Contrast’ tool I was able to fix the brightness by lowering it and fix the contrast by adding to it.

• This has resulted in some of the colours to be slightly distorted, which I can fix with the colour correction tool.

Colour Correction

• Because the previous tool made some of the colours distorted and warped, I need to use the ‘Colour Balance’ tool to fix this.

• I added some red and removed some green and blue to make a more realistic looking image.

• One thing that would further improve the photo would be to crop it.

Cropping

• This will make the audience feel more involved with the photo because it is closer on the model giving the audience a false sense of involvement.

Flip Image

• This is better for text placement on the contents because the text is usually on the left hand side on a contents page and therefore more realistic.

Here is the final image in InDesign. In Photoshop I saved the photo as a .JPEG file and then in InDesign I imported the photo and placed it in the location where I wanted it to go. I Scaled it to as close as to the correct size as possible and this is the finished result.

Here using the text tool I have made the header. This is based on ‘The Source’ where the page title is in the right hand corner as a header. I have used the same font as the front cover masthead to try and keep some kind of house style going. I have made the text white so that it is instantly visible against the dark background making it easier for the reader to read.

Again based on magazines from my research, my footer contains the magazine information (name, issue number and date). The font is the same as the header to enforce house style and the text is white to help with a house style but to also make it visible against the dark background. I used the text tool to type this in InDesign.

All magazines have page numbers, so for mine to look more professional I used a page number. It’s the same font and colour to keep a house style going. I used the text tool to type this in InDesign.

In Photoshop I made a slightly visible box and saved this as a .PNG file. This means it is slightly transparent. Using the place tool in InDesign I placed it where I wanted it. This is based on an idea ‘The Source’ has (where a half-transparent box contains the text) and to try and show realism and professionalism in my magazine, I am doing it here. ‘Vibe’ and ‘Spin’ also used it further rectifying realism in my magazine.

Here I have used the text tool to add the text, all contents pages have text. I made the page numbers bigger and bold, artist names bold, and article names bold and slightly bigger. This is heavily based on ‘The Source’ which did the same thing.
